Shock! Horror! Bandwidth! Batman: Arkham Knight is a big game!

I've-really-let-myself-go-lately

In non April Fool’s news of a most shocking nature, new details have slipped out that reveal the upcoming Batman: Arkham Knight to be a game that is bigger than an entire book of yo mama jokes. We do advise any readers with sensitive constitutions or sissy-boy tolerance levels for high bandwidth downloads, to not read further. If you don’t want to be cool that is. CHICKEN!

Right now, you can grab a digital pre-order of the game. Which clocks in at a size of 48.7 gigabytes of hard drive real estate. Don’t believe me? Here’s proof on this mirth-filled day, captured this morning from my PS4:

Batman-PS4

Holeee crap. Arkham Knight isn’t the only game guilty of this however. The Last Of Us, GTA V Definitive Edition and The Order have all boasted download sizes in the dozens of gigabytes range, as if high-resolution textures, new graphical engines and crisper audio were some sort of reason for the bigger games. Shocking stuff, I know.

Here’s how long it’ll take you to download the game then, based on your ADSL landline. Warning, it makes for some grim figures:

  • 1 Mbit – 116.12 hours
  • 2 Mbit – 58 hours
  • 4 Mbit – 29 hours
  • 10 Mbit – 11.3 hours
  • 20 Mbit – 5.4 hours you bastard
  • 40 Mbit – I hate you

That’s a pretty big game then, no joke. As for the Xbox One version, we’re making an uneducated guess that you’ll have to duct-tape two of those console together in order to have enough hard drive space available.

Roflcopter, these poor peasants complaining that their silly games are becoming as large as the big boy games.

For games to look as good as they do they need all the textures and that unfortunately takes some space.

You dont see articles about how big PC games are right? Were used to it because our games have always looked impressive (for the most part).

Ive downloaded Mods for Arma as big as some people on Console’s games.

I also think its quite large, but that is the norm nowadays and its only going to get bigger.

Star Citizen is rumored to be roughly 100GB when its done…

well 4 discs takes about 30 minutes on my pc and its not really a monster machine.
10 should be just over an hour.
considering most people have the minimum linespeed of 2mb, 100gb at 200kbs, could take a fair bit longer.

Take into account that most South Africans don’t have uncapped unshapped internet. Seems like there’s been a big push from ISP’s to get users to download between 12am to 6am but for the most part 6pm to 6am download time is what you will get with uncapped. So you looking at 10 days on a 2mb line.

Unless you want to pay R130 for 60gb capped internet per game download.

And if you have no internet there is always The Witcher 3 with NO-DRM coming. The LoveBringer.

Still don’t agree 100%. I see what you are saying, but at the time they were released, the price difference was about $30 between a 500GB and 1TB drive (Retail price). So I don’t think it would have made that much of a difference. Not considering the discount they would get due to large order numbers and purchasing through their own suppliers that sell at a cheaper rate than retail .

            April 1, 2015 at 12:57

more like $10 per unit. Bulk means discounts. And retail prices are hugely marked up from initial assembly cost.

That’s 30$ at retail. Remember they pay a lot less. Maybe for Sony and MS the price difference would have been $10 which could easily have been worked in to the console price

          • Ryanza

            April 1, 2015 at 13:14

$10 times 20 million is still a big fucking saving. Plus profits they make from selling HDD upgrades.

          • Ranting Raptor

            April 1, 2015 at 13:18

Agreed. But again, they could have given a 1TB version for 10 – 30 USD more and people would have bought it. Still would have profited immensely.

          • Matthew Holliday

            April 1, 2015 at 13:22

            its 30$ for retail.

bulk buying, buying directly from manufacturer and striking deals, would probably drop that 30$ down to about 10$ on the console manufacturers side.

          • Matthew Holliday

            April 1, 2015 at 13:17

the bigger the HDD the more gb you get per rand. increasing size makes for more efficient costing.
            BUT
bigger hardrives have faults and die like, all the time.

i think 1tb would have been ideal, 500gb HDDs are more stable and consistant, but the difference in performance and consistancy between a 500gb and a 1tb is negligible. going anything over 1tb however, is like asking for explosions.

          • Ryanza

            April 1, 2015 at 12:55

The RAM, to me, is so that the OS doesn’t lag in it’s chops like on the Xbox 360. Sony just went with GDDR5 RAM as a fuck you to Microsoft.

          • Pariah

            April 1, 2015 at 12:56

No, GDDR5 is for gaming only. Not for multitasking. Xbox focus = entertainment centre. PS4 focus = games only.

And they both have their pros and cons.

the problem is that bigger isnt better.
when i built my PC, i opted for 2x 1tb hardrives, instead of one 2tb or 4tb.
bigger hardrives consistantly tend to have problems more often.
size isnt consistant with age, tech is. 10tb isnt cutting edge, SSD’s are.

1TB SSDs are out there, the only restraint is price, around $400-$450 each.

CoD AW was the same size and was on 4.
          same with DA:I.

4 discs is a pretty safe bet.

time to switch to a capped account.
i switched from a 2mb business uncapped, to a 4mb capped 120/480gb account (with webafrica) with no increase in monthly cost.
downloads have been rock solid consistant, ping doesnt flutter at all and no throttling. capped is legit.

Agreed. I decided on capped over uncapped because of line speeds, and I get almost 100% line speed at all times (390kbps – 410kbps download on a 4mbit line)

i usually sit around 330kb/s, which is fast enough for me tbh, but it doesnt waver, never drops, never increases, consistant as.

but i was more impressed with when i had origin downloading the DLC for DA:I and Steam downloading the DLC for BL:TPS at the same time.
each were going at 350kbs, i know origin do some weird magic with compression, but i was still impressed.

my uncapped 2mb account would spike from 50kbs to 300kbs, it was never constant, hated that.

Capped may be better but with the amount downloaded…
I think my brother once managed to download over 80 gigs in the first week.

if i tried, i could cap the 120gb ez.
          but i dont try.
i just download what i want and the 480gb 12pm-6am cap acts as a buffer for the bigger stuff.
my peak downloads per day were around 10gb, but averaged around 3gb per day for normal usage. totalling at around 130gb per month.
the 480gb buffer would be pretty hard to hit though.

if you manage to do 80gb in a week and keep that up consistantly, you would probably recieve a call from your ISP telling you to cut that shit out.

my friends did, in the end, mweb told them they were not welcome and cancelled their account.
most ISPs have an “acceptable usage” policy for uncapped, which they are pretty liberal with and wont divulge the tolerances for.

Hate the two limitations Physical Has,

    1) You Almost always have a day one update in this day and age

    2) You require the disc to play.

On the second one, it would have been perfect if you could buy the disc install and play without the disc, I am all digital and like being able to switch between games without getting the error that you dont have the correct disc in the drive because lets face it, Its such a drag on that day when you are lazy and just wanna play regardless of how many games you switch between…

I have XBOX One games Physical and its a requirement (DRM) that the disc be in the drive to play as this is to prevent you from selling the game and still being able to play it… So while the game is installed on the HDD the disc is used to validate it for those that dont have internet connections… I got 4 discs based games with the console… still waiting for them to become heavily discounted on the Digital store so i can make em digital
