The League of Legends World Championships kick off today, and it’s time to admit you know absolutely noting about League of Legends, but are not ashamed to at least try to enjoy one of the biggest eSports tournaments this year. This noob friendly guide will ensure you last at least 5 minutes at the water cooler when League of Legends is the topic of discussion. First of all, you can tell them about the awesome teaser you saw.
What is Worlds?
Worlds is the equivalent of the Dota 2 International, the culmination of a qualifier series where the best teams in the world compete for a grand prize of $1,000,000, and the Summoner’s Cup. The main differentiator between Worlds and The International is that this series travels to four separate locations around the world, with a stage held at each. The Group stages are in Paris, Quarter Finals in London, Semi-Finals in Brussels and the Grand Final in Berlin. That’s pretty impressive for a world series.
These are the teams. I’d recommend picking one, learning the players and just bring them up in conversation.
Group A | Group B | Group C | Group D |
Counter Logic Gaming (USA) | Fnatic (Europe) | SKTelecom T1 (Korea) | LGD Gaming (China) |
Koo Tigers (Korea) | Invictus Gaming (China) | Edward Gaming (China) | kt Rolster (Korea) |
Flash Wolves (Taiwan) | AHQ eSports (Taiwan) | H2K (Europe) | Team Solo Mid (USA) |
paiN Gaming (Brazil) | Cloud 9 (USA) | Bangkok Titans (Thailand) | Origen (Europe) |
I think as a standard I’d go with either Cloud 9 or Team Solo Mid, learn them and chat about them. This is the easiest way.
Schedule and Stream
Even though I’ve never really been a huge fan of League of Legends, the one thing which always made me want to watch was their production quality. It’s almost too professional, but at the same time unrivaled in eSports. As with every World Championships, the tournament will be streamed to two separate channels.
Twitch TV – Riot Games
Twitch will act as the main stream for the tournament, with a simulcast on YouTube.
The tournament kicks off today at around 16:00. The full schedule is available on the League of Legends site, which includes the format.

According to an earlier article it’s a Halo-like FPS. I think. I wasn’t really paying attention.

I was sick last year so landed up watching the quarters and semis, I have played a little so that I was not completely lost, but even so it took a while to get to grips with what everyone’s doing. If you want to support a team maybe pick SK1 or LGD gaming I would not be surprised if they compete in the final.
