Star Wars 1313 was one of the highlights of Gamescom last year with the incredible graphics and gameplay simply an appetizer based around the actual story and world that we were expecting to dive into. However Disney has decided that’s a terrible idea and has cancelled the title outright.
Many Star Wars fans were wary that Disney would ruin the legacy of Star Wars after purchasing all of the Lucas companies last year. We instantly heard that there will definitely be more Star Wars films coming but the axing of the first M-rated Star Wars title points to Disney imposing their family friendly image across the group.
In fact the entire Lucas Arts development studio has now been closed down and all staff have been let go. The name will stay and the plan is to now outsource development to other studios instead of handling it internally.
If George Lucas was dead he would be rolling in his grave.. but I guess for now he can simply roll around in the billions he was paid for his companies.
I have always said I seriously doubt we’d ever see this game on the Xbox 360 or PS3… but I would never have guessed that we actually would never see it at all.
According to insider sources the chance of someone else picking up the rights to complete Star Wars 1313 are pretty much zero.

Palpatine would never be able to conceive the evil that Disney has conceived by shutting down Lucasarts. Palpatine could take lessons from Disney 🙁

It makes sense though that they closed them down … Lucas Arts games doesn’t seem to produce any decent or profitable games …. but, this is still sad news

Yip. Was sceptical when they bought the rights and now it`s been confirmed. Disney is going to cash in on the franchise and will be dumbing it down

No exactly surprising. Disney wont do anything that would carry a rating above PG. Since shooting people or Aliens would at the very least give it a more mature rating it gets shelved.

OK… now all they have to do is insert Mickey and crew into a near finished game and call it Disney Wars 1313… This sucks bollocks! Now where did I put those Star wars BluRay discs with the extra 13 seconds of unseen footage?!!?

To be fair, George Lucas donated the whole $4bn he received from selling LucasFilm to educational charities in the States. He can’t rightly be accused of cashing out with the sale.
He did it with some sub-par games, series etc. over the years, but not this transaction.

Maybe Disney is seeing the potential crash of the gaming industry in a serious light and do not want to be dragged into it. It can also be that the directors was really bored and decided to do something fun by closing Lucasarts just to see what happens. It is a pitty. I would have loved to have a chance to see what an enrgaged wookee would do to Mickey Mouse a Star Wars game. Does this mean that there will never be another Star Wars game again or are they going to give third parties the right to develop. In that case why do they not give Star Wars 1313 to another studio to finish.
Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)
April 4, 2013 at 11:46
Yeah, I think the cost of the project, and the fact that TOR hasn’t exactly set the gaming world alight left them with doubts over whether Star Wars 1313 will actually be bankable. if you think about it, Star Wars games sell poorly (relatively to other franchises) so Disney took a business decision.
Also their focus (much like many others) is on mobile and social gaming, so it’s really not surprising that 1313 got the boot. It’s really weird but it seems triple A Console and PC gaming carries too much risk…
Anyway…
The game does look interesting though, but alas… into the wind it goes…

Here’s to hoping they don’t turn Starwars into a Disney musical. It wouldn’t surprise me if they try to find a way to work slavery, Sith torture and Bounty Hunting out of the franchise. The new Sith lord will be Jafar from Aladdin! …on a more serious note, I hope they don’t let the essence that made the original amazing slip through the cracks. I mean, there’s still so much story and lore left they can use to make amazing products with. 🙁

I smell a petition, or is that a Kickstarter – or Bantha Poodoo?
A game as anticipated as 1313 being outright cancelled doesn’t make sense right now. Maybe they didn’t want to fund a team at this point and have shelved it during the restructuring process?

Come on lads, let’s be honest here, when did Lucasarts create a game that was (a) good and (b) worth your money? While it’s sad that star wars 1313 and the studio went the way of a rotting COD fish, what Star Wars needs is a kick in the creative pants. It desperately needed new blood, because after the last movies it was clear, George Lucas had lost his damn mind, and his bag of mojo.
Gareth Lagesse
April 4, 2013 at 12:15
Totally in agreement, but 1313 shouldn’t be canned. Shifted to a new studio, maybe, but not canned. It was a new direction – no lightsabres or jedis – and was highly anticipated.
Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

We just saw how badly the latest Aliens game turned out, because of shifting to a new studio or subcontracting the work. I would imagine the lawyers, contracts and agreements that go into it, probably left the Disney head honchos cold, and it would have been more of a bother than its seemingly worth.
Also, since LucasArts hasn’t created a hit since… (GRIM FANDANGO?), I’d also have been sceptical. It would have been different if they were Naughty Dogs, and you had a long list of hits. For a studio like LucasArt, they purely existed because George Lucas wanted a game studio (and those handful of Star Wars geeks want an occasional game). I mean what was the last star wars game LucasArts did..?
KINECT STAR WARS….
If I was a head honcho at Disney, I would have handed out pink slips the day we bought them.
