Sony had a fantastic reveal of the PlayStation 4 last week that nearly went to perfection; except they had forgotten one thing…to actually show us what the PlayStation 4 looks like.
Now to be honest I didn’t care at all that we didn’t see the PlayStation 4; it was weird that it didn’t arrive but I really didn’t care.
However I appear to be in the minority with a lot of criticism being levelled at Sony for the fact that people still don’t know what the PS4 looks like.
The head of PlayStation UK, Fergal Gara, has let his feelings known to videogamer and they are quite clear
“So right, it wasn’t available to show last night, it wasn’t considered appropriate to show it last night. So what? It’s much more important to see what the damn thing does. The shiniest piece of black, green or purple plastic ever, you know, whatever, so what? It’s not the most important thing.”.
and
“[There was a] bit of cynicism over ‘we didn’t see the box’ and that kind of stuff, ‘we don’t know quite what date and quite what price’,” Gara said. “I understand that frustration but frankly, a box is a box. Is that really the most important thing?
So yeah he’s obviously bored of answering those questions.
But tell us, do you think Sony stumbled by not showing the black shiny box of power or does it really not matter right now?

It doesn’t matter what the box looks like, but I think Sony did it on purpose to keep everybody talking about the (lack of) PS4!

No box = no product = its just a myth.
Much like a new car that is going to be produced. If there’s an empty stand at a car show, with a sign board listing ‘what it can do’, how will people react?

This early in the game, it is totally irrelevant. The console is expected to be released in about 10 months time. If it was one month before the release, I’d be worried / annoyed. Secondly, we are so quick to crucify developers and game companies when the final product is different that what was shown / promised. If they want to first finish the box before revealing same, kudos to them.
At E3, we will see the PS4 in all its glory. Be patient, young padawan.

There new marketing team’s strategy seems to be working though.. This is probably the most searched and discussed topic at the moment with most people also hoping for a leaked image of a PS4 console

8 GIGS. 4 chips per gig = 32 chips on the mother board… thats some crazy shit.
The developers are rejoicing like its the second coming. HUGE HUGE leap, how they sell it cheaper than the Titan is mind baffling.

With the hype that has been caused by not seeing the orbis4 can one also assume that these people are prospective buyers for said unseen box?
One thing is sure… It WILL NOT look like this

The only time I ever see my PS3 is when I insert a game to play or a bluRay to watch… But it’s understandable if (E)Xbox owners would want to see it’s aesthetics as they do see their consoles a lot more due to disc swapping (megatrolololol).
As long as Sony delivers on their promise I am sold and bring with that promise a new exclusive catalog of IP’s

Right because they design their rooms around what the PS looks like?
Or
It needs to fit into their room’s colour scheme?

However, the way a PC tower case looks. Now there is a discussion I can get in to

Honestly, like any hardware based platform (PC, Xbox, Nintendo) the hardware is what’s vital. Poor hardware with the sexiest box in the world is a waste of time & money. But a crappy box with insane hardware, and 10 minutes into your eyeball-popping, jaw-dropping experience, you won’t give a hoot about the look of the box.
Hardware > Vanity imho.

only thing i have against pc’s. installation, start game, bombs out, patching and latest updates, start game.. bombs out graphics card out of date… buy new graphics card… Xbox and PS – insert disc, install game, it downloads patches auto and it works… dont crucify me – my opinion. If i buy a game i want to play it immediately ! PC’s are great – for surfing the internet and work!

How can you sell a product and not show the goods. Its like selling a car purely on specs. I think he though it is not important and now the masses proofs him wrong. Something he clearly cant handle. No Price, no Date? They look like some start up company selling promises in order to gain funds.
Banana Jim

You don’t show the dirty unwashed masses your underpants, instead you stare at them from behind a gated complex. The less Sony shows the better. It means they get to increase their momentum post-MS reveal going into E3 and beyond. If Microsoft is smart, they’ll do the same. Keep the masses guessing, rather then spoon-feeding them everything like the Wii-U did. By the time the Wii-U released, no one really cared, because the mystery was gone.

Surely Sony can understand that people wanted to see the console. It was sort of a half presentation at the end of the day. IMO. Part 2 to come.

I see it as a bit of a desperate attempt to get the PS4 out of the door and into the minds of people before Microsoft reveal the new Xbox. It’s extremely strange that they’ve announced a new product, but that they haven’t shown it to us. I am the type of consumer that enjoys seeing what it is I am planning to buy. I find it hard to hype myself up over a product unless I know what physical form it will take. Imagine Apple announcing a new iPhone, but rattling on about its features instead of showing us what it’ll look like. I know they’re two very different products, but for consumers like me Sony haven’t done themselves any favours in winning us over at all. They should have waited until they could pull off a proper reveal of the actual console.

The shift from 4Gb to 8Gb RAM was made in the last few weeks, so there is a slight possibility they had to tweak the box for a bit extra space, but it’s unlikely. At this point I’m sure it’s all about marketing. What else could they have left out to show at a later stage…

Really some people just want to complain for the sake of complaining. Who cares what the thing looks like? It’s the way it performs that matter not the looks of the console. It’s going to be black and it’s going to be plastic and have buttons and lights on it. Mystery solved.

They played the games live on stage with the PS4 controller on what box?….i wonder what that looked like?….was probably a PC 😛
Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew
February 26, 2013 at 09:22
I honestly don’t feel the need. For all we know, in its current state it’s simply a square piece of plastic with bits of circuit board sticking out everywhere and they haven’t quite decided on a design yet.
So what? At least people have seen what it can do. Well, hopefully it’s not just hype anyway…..
Also: The guy’s name is Gara… Wonder if he has the power to control sand and has the word love tattooed on to his forehead?

February 26, 2013 at 09:32
Well, I don’t think they did themselves any favours…Fair enough, it sparks controversy but the scepticism of whether or not actual hardware was used ruins a subconscious trust…It’s like they handed Microsoft credibility on a plate…

The problem was that Sony’s presentation was all BS, 5 min Vita Add followed by boring tech power point just to be before MS. From Weekend Confirmed Garnett Lee, this is how u do a tech reveal:
Lights go out
Awesome video showing a box and controller mock up followed by the coolest most awesome in game graphics and sound that make the guys in the first 5 row convulse while creaming their pants and bleed from their eyes.
Enter stage left ” Yo MOTHERF*CKERS WE ARE SONY WE ARE BAD ASS THIS IS GOING TO AWESOME.”
Give 5 min tech run down.
“And you think the opening was cool check this out … ‘
Drop mike and roll footage.
Kill row 6 to 9 with pure awesomeness….
