Remember the footage of the HD imaging of The Legend of Zelda that we saw from the Wii U at this year’s E3? It’s gorgeous stuff, and it’s pretty much sold me on the Wii U as a platform – not because of its kooky controller – but because it’s about bloody time we got some gorgeous, HD versions of Nintendo’s classic franchises with a more mature slant to them. At some point, Nintendo has to realise that many of its fans - the people who grew up on all things Nintendo – are adults and wants games for adults…
Which makes Legend of Zelda boss Eiji Aonuma’s comments on the Wii U demo reassuring.
Speaking to Game Informer, he revealed he’s planning to “take advantage of [Wii U’s] power” with the console’s first Zelda on the Wii U, saying “The demo that we showed at E3 was really just more of a rough idea of if all we were to do was to take a Zelda game and put it in HD, this is what it might look like. We’re much more interested in looking at the power of the Wii U system and seeing how we can take advantage of that power to do things that we haven’t been able to do in a Zelda game before…†Well, that’s if they can get the thing to work, of course.
“One of our goals with [Skyward Sword] is to be the first step in illustrating for people how the Zelda series can change and evolve.”
Of course, Zelda fans have been through this before. In 2000, Nintendo showcased a dark, gritty and much more realistic Zelda tech demo for the Gamecube hardware that appealed to mature fans of the series. Two years later, what Zelda fans got was Wind Waker – a fantatic game in its own right, but featuring very cartoonish cel-shaded graphics that deterred many older gamers. Let’s hope history doesn’t repeat itself.
