Well here’s an uppercut of bloody good news. Last year, Mortal Kombat returned with a bang, alongside a web-exclusive series of shorts set in that universe, albeit with a more realistic take on familiar characters. And the fans loved that slice of grittier action from director Kevin Tancharoen, making a sequel series inevitable.
Tancharoen will helm the new series once again, and will bring a few more recognisable characters into season two, such as Liu Kang and Ermac. A few casting changes have also taken place, as Casper “Starship Troopers” Van Dien will now play Johnny Cage, while Shang Tsung actor Johnson Phan will not return.
Instead, the original soul sucker himself, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, will once again play the role of the Outworld sorcerer supreme. Tagawa was the first person to play the character on the big screen, back in 1995 for the Paul Anderson directed film that was based on the game.
Tancharoen said to VG24/7 that season two will have “added visual effects and storylines that dive deeper into our warriors”. Personally, I just want to see more Kano and moar ninja cyborgs duking it out. That would make me happier than that time Mileena left her mask on.
