I loved the hell out of Guitar Hero and Rock Band, and right now, I’ve got a cupboard full of faux plastic instruments that still get hauled out on the odd occasion, when company and the requisite amount of alcohol dictate it. With the rocking-out-to-music-while-jamming-on-fake-instruments genre gone for many a year, there’s been a great deal of speculation as to whether or not it’ll find a resurgence. Could Rock Band and its ilk come back? Harmonix seems to thinks so.
After two years of dormancy, just last month Harmonix released three more downloadable songs: Arctic Monkeys’ “R U Mine?” Avenged Sevenfold’s “Shepherd Of Fire” and the Foo Fighters’ “Something From Nothing.” Many wondered if this was some sort of signalled return, or a crazy-once off.
Now, there are two brand new songs soon to be available (via VG247) – and they certainly seem to hint that Rock Band may be set to return. Tenacious D’s “Rize Of The Fenix” and Weezer’s “Back To The Shack” will be available for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 from tomorrow, and both seem to hint at a return.
It could, of course, just be Harmonix being sly jesters, getting people’s hopes up for no good reason, or it could be some sort of portent. I’d be completely on board with a new Rock Band, with a few next-gen embellishments . Geoff and the Electric Bananas of Doom could be set for a comeback tour – but I’d only do so if I could magically use all of my existing fake instruments, because there’s no chance on earth I’m buying a brand new set.

I never rock banded…. I don’t get the point!! I would rather Rocksmith then, so that I at least learn how to play an actual guitar!!

so would you rather learn to actually mine, than play Minecraft? Would you rather learn to face off against a clicker horde than play The Last of Us? Would you rather beat a hooker upside the head with a baseball bat than play GTA? 😛

Yes, bacuase all those things are not viable/legal to do in real life. Playing guitar is and the satisfaction you gain from it will be way better then playing pinball on a guitar shaped plank.

WHY NOT BOTH?
Rock Band may be silly plastic instruments, and it is – but it’s also a fuckload of fun.

I won’t lie it is fun! But after a couple of minutes I get frustrated and then just pick up a real guitar.

We had a full band, two guitars, drums and a mic. Always laughed at the guy on the mic. Trying to keep a steady note.

Nothing drops panties faster than hitting coloured buttons on a little plastic guitar in perfect sync with the on-screen prompts… Nothing. I’m f*cking for this. Hard. Carry on my Wayward sons.

I have rock band and a bunch of Guitar heroes, nothing better than an adhoc jam session with the family.
I bought the drum kit and a guitar second hand about 5 years ago and a few months back the guy I bought it from wanted to buy it back…. goes to show those games are timeless and great fun.
