In case you haven’t been following the latest hype, Heroes of the Storm received its first major competition in South Africa with a massive R60 000 prize pool. The signups went live two weeks ago, receiving a welcomed response, and signups for the qualifiers have been extended to September 4th. The qualifiers already feature a few big name MGOs such as Bravado Gaming, Energy eSports, Veneration eSports and Ventus Gaming, but the playing field is still wide open so this is your chance to upset the balance.
The HotS Dream
Upon announcement the Heroes of The Storm dream became real as a few top Dota 2 players made the switch. Overnight the game went from a casual “hey I’m bored, let’s play HotS” to an actual grind to be the best. On the Heroes of The Storm Facebook page members of the community began forming teams, posting their ranks and weighing in on the competition. So far 15 teams have signed up for the open qualifiers, which have yet to receive a date.
As I mentioned, a few teams are comprised of former Premier Division Dota 2 players. I apologize for once again jumping to our two favourite MGOs, but they’re the two I’ve been keeping a close eye on.
Energy eSports
Energy were among one of the first MGOs to introduce their HotS team. Catching wind of the competition early (I presume) lead to an announcement upon release of a new HotS team comprised of Dota 2 players. Three out of the five players were in the Energy eSports Dota 2 team who placed second at the NAG Auros Corsair Tournament at rAge in 2014.
- Sakkie ‘RandomHero’ Basson (Former Energy eSports Dota 2 member)
- Justin ‘LetsGetParty’ Probyn (Former Energy eSports Dota 2 member)
- Dylan ‘Shanks’ Probyn (Former Energy eSports Dota 2 member)
- Chris ‘Truck’ Austin (Former Team Roccat Dota 2 member)
- Peter ‘Fancy’ Long How (Former Team Roccat Dota 2 member)
As I may seem naive, naming only one team out of the possible fifteen, does need some perspective. Being close with the team, and the members, I’ve seen the amount of effort and theory crafting which has gone in to the past few weeks of practice. There are undoubtedly a ton of skilled players in the community, and this will become evident in the upcoming qualifiers. The competition is still wide open, and I will continue to highlight the individuals and teams who outperform the rest during the competition, so you better register soon.

Interesting. Just got the game at the end of last week. And only because I could get the Diablo character for free. Seems fun the few times I played in training, but I dread playing online with other players.
