The Xbox One may not need you to check in every 24 hours so that the NSA can spy on your pasty pale body while you play Halo (Dear Kinect: I will be naked), but that doesn’t mean that the console won’t have some strange ideas when it comes combining games and digital downloads. Take Forza 5 for instance. The entire game won’t even be on the disc when it launches on day one.
Speaking to IGN, Turn 10’s Dan Greenwalt explained that Forza 5 would need to download more of itself before you could play the game:
So when you first boot up the game, we’re going to ask you to log in. And when you log in you’re going to get the Drivatars and you’re also going to get a whole bunch of content: tracks and cars. Our production schedule is such that we are putting them in as late as possible and that means making them free as downloadable content on Day One.
Welcome to the future of gaming folks. On the one hand, I get that some fans are going to be upset that they’re being forced to download content for free so that Forza 5 can make the launch date, but then again, this is the direction that the industry is going in.
Both the Playstation 4 and the Xbox One allow players to game while downloading content, and you can bet your controllers that we’ll be seeing more games following this model in the future. And hell, the PC platform has been doing this for years already.

I don’t understand why you won’t be able to play the game after installing it from disk without downloading the free content first. Surely you’d have one or two cars & tracks for people to play with while waiting for the download… or is this free download of cars & tracks going to be 3kb unlock code for stuff already on the disk.

The download is there because they are behind their projected launch deadlines. They will be releasing the bones of the game, and updating content such as cars and tracks with the download.
Now, I think this could have been completely avoided if MS hadn’t moved their launch window sooner to compete with Sony. It seems like MS are just putting pressure on Turn 10 to deliver a system seller launch title. Turn 10 aren’t at fault here, if anything it’s a relief they aren’t launching the game with limited content, then charging for DLC a month later.

A lot of areas don’t have access to broadband connections. It’s quite clear in our country for example. In the Durban area there are a number of zones where the lines cap at 512, if they even have access to DSL at all. Our country may be third world, but we’re better off than many other places. Even the US has at least a third of its population unconnected.

C’mon guys, just read the full IGN article. The original game was designed to be always online and this being a launch title, they need do to a workaround and this is it! The original game would’ve had Drivatars online, but in order to enable offline play they need to add some AI Drivatars as I understand it. I think this game will be awesome and always evolving, and no owe race will be the same! Whether you play always online or just update the Drivatars each time you connect, the difficulty will always evolve and present you with a challenge even when playing offline! This is what I expect of a next gen title, some new innovation and thinking outside the box! Great stuff, you can either get with it and evolve with the next gen, or stay behind so you still get a choice! ????. There, I used “Drivatars” and “Evolve” 4 times in this post! Hahaha!

I hear you, hopefully it’s not going to be that big? But unfortunately we make up such a small portion of the market there will always be features that we will not be able to utilise on the next gen without proper DSL like Gaikai or Azure or HD streaming! Even the play as you download option of next gen is going to suck if you have to wait for “Act 2” to download after finishing “Act 1” already! ????. But hey, hopefully our new minister of communication is a gaming fan right???LOL!

Thing is, they already stated that Drivatars would only be available online, through the cloud. Obviously they have changed their minds since. Drivatars and connection requirements aren’t the only thing keeping them behind. They have said, in the quote above that there are tracks and cars missing. It’s going to be a large patch.
They’re missing deadlines, and the game won’t be ready for shipping if they don’t send it out as it is, and roll out the rest on launch day.
