The Witcher 3 is how big on consoles?

Witcher 3 landscape

I knew that I’d fill my hard drive on the new generation consoles; I just didn’t expect them to fill up this quickly. 500GB sounds like a lot, but when games are easily 20-30GB, that space fills up much faster. The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt is promising a massive world and over 100 hours of gameplay. So, I guess the install size on consoles shouldn’t surprise us too much.

While the PC version will require 40GB of hard drive space, the PS4 version is listing a minimum install size of 50GB and we can assume a similar size will used up on your Xbox One. It’s a good thing that you’ll only be playing it exclusively for a while once it launches – there isn’t much room for other games to be installed at the same time.

To put this in perspective, Dragon Age: Inquisition was around the 40-45GB mark on PS4. So, I guess the Witcher 3 will be a bigger game. Then again, the developers explained that they are trying to offer a different experience to what Dragon Age did, even though they enjoyed that game, too.

I think, we are a completely different kind of fantasy. Like Dragon Age is more kind of high fantasy, like dragons and spells, and The Witcher is more grounded, fantasy may be a part of the world, but it isn’t the main thing. There is magic in the world, but only a few people are able to cast it, and it is anchored to a certain view that people have towards it. It is much more about the people living in the world, and it just so happens to have all of these kinds of monster roaming around. Fantasy gives us more of a kind of freedom as well to design the world with.

We fully admire what Dragon Age has achieved with a couple game of the year awards and it is really nice. I played that game and I really enjoyed it, but we are approaching a slightly different kind of experience, which is a very very deep type of story telling. I think that if you go into The Witcher world very heavily, you will discover just how many things you can discover.

With over 100 hours of gameplay and some of the best visuals we’ve ever seen in a game, The Witcher 3 is promising to set a new standard for RPGs. I suppose it then makes sense that it will take up about 10% of the HDD space on the PS4.

I know that the game will be best on PC, but I wouldn’t be surprised if many people opt to play it on console. If you don’t have a top of the line PC, it may be hard to deal with running the game on sub-optimal settings and it might not look as gorgeous as you know it could. Instead, the console versions will look lovely and you know that they will be optimized for what’s inside. Just be prepared to delete some of your lesser played titles to make room for the install.

GTX 960 can handle this game. Along with a basic i5 and 8GB of RAM (Which is cheap lately) you can get the full experience on PC for the same price as a console. #Just saying

Ive never understood how people say they can build that kind of PC for that kind of price
      the 960 is a R3500 card

you can get it for the same price as a console if you dont have to buy the remaining parts.
the parts you mentioned alone hits just under R7 000

hdd, psu and case will set you back atleast another R1500
and motherboard depends on how much you wanna skimp off the price
My math comes up to aroun R9 000 for a decent PC

One day the PC vs Console debate will finally be so boring, people engaging in the discussion would be thrown into the street and beaten to death with old PC and console components by the masses.

You did the work for me right now. Thanks for that. Im in the look out for PC parts and saw the prices for the GPU. You will get comments on how each console game costs ±R700 etc etc, but at the end of the day PC parts are expensive if you want to play the game as intended. Oh and PC game prices are on the rise as well so there not much else they can play on the whole build a pc is cheaper to get best experience etc etc.

aye, PC parts are expensive, yet i still built a PC isntead of getting the xbone, go figure.
if you looking for quality parts for good prices, check out the evetech upgrade bundles for your core parts.

PC game prices have been rising, but not as fast as expected.
the exchange rate skyrocketed over last year, but Witcher 3 was still only R450, which is comparable to witcher 2 prices.
that doesnt include the steam summer sales or origin sales either, when borderlands TPS shows up on steam for 20$ with the seasons pass and dragon age inquisition for R250 on Origin, its going to be hard to justify getting a console.

Im building a Mini-ITX PC. It will be used for gaming (Certain games), but mostly work and for watching series and movies. Gaming isnt on top of the list for me, but there will be one or two ill be playing on PC. FPS’s for example is just far better on PC than Console. I could never get into FPS’s on console. Steam has great sales for people who enjoy indie games and older games etc. Im not really one of those who are into the indie scene much. You see I dont even have a console yet simply cause its too expensive right now, but I do intend on getting one for specific games thats not on PC. Like I always enjoyed Forza etc so naturally will get on console. There are certain exclusives on console i really want to play so it will be a mixed bag for me. Im no die hard console junky. I just go where a game interests me, but I do agree with everything you said.

I been on their site and they kinda pricey for what I want to build. I been on Wootware which isnt too badly priced and then RebelTech is also decent with prices. This build will take me a bit of time so its no real rush. My current pc cant even play Ridge Race Rebound lol its that sad so i just use it for series and movies right now. I think im like one of the only ones in this world who still uses 2gig DDR2 800mhz RAM LOL

forza is pretty much my whole argument for the Xbone.
also cant FPS on consoles, those sticks simply dont work.

wootware prices are good for some, but terribad for others.
            takealot daily deals are >>
patience is always good, just dont go overboard, the feeling of waiting, then going for it, only to see your most expensive part show up the next day on the takealot daily deals for 30% off, REALLY hurts.

Oh I know the feeling. I was just recently burned. Bought an amazing bed that was on a sale for R3000 (Normal price R3900) only to see yesterday that its on another sale for R2300. Depressing. I usually also wait until the right time. With my current build im not rushing it cause the Mini-ITX 970 GPU is pricey. Same costs as the original sized card.

            February 2, 2015 at 10:33

yeah, i bought an R9 270 for my rig for like R2800, then saw it on takealot a month later for R2300, so i just bought it again and crossfired them.
although in hindsight, crossfiring isnt really worth it.

          • CypherGate

            February 2, 2015 at 10:36

Yeah crossfire isnt that worth it. Some games can benefit from it though.

        GTX 960 – R3k (Shop around, there’s one on Rebeltech for 3K)

        AMD Vishera FX-6300, 3.50GHz, Hex Core, AM3+, Black Edition – R1600

        MSI 970A-G43, AM3+ mobo R952

        Corsair 8GB (4+4) R1000

        Total around R6500

That’s your upgrade right there for 1080p gaming. You don’t need the chasis, keyboard, mouse etc as you should already have it if you’re already a PC gamer.

Yes if you want to start out from scratch you need to add:

R500 chasis (You really are not running a beast that needs super expensive chasis designs)

R800 PSU (With the above rig you basically need a 550W bronze and that’s all)

        1TB HDD R800

        R300 keyboard mouse combo

R200 Optical drive (No bluRay needed here)

That’s R9100 from scratch with all the essentials. THe differance in price you really make up in game prices. But if you are just upgrading from your previous gen as a gamer who already owns a PC with HDD etc you can easily get away for R6500 – R7000 (Mobo and stuff included)

Further to my post this is using SA prices which aren’t really reflective of US prices. In the US it’s possible to do a gaming PC (PSU etc all inclusive) for the price of a console. THere are youtube videos everywhere about this topic.

Not saying 1 is better than the other. They both play games heh. So just preference. But if you shop smart you don’t have to break the bank to get in to PC gaming (Comparatively speaking to console gaming that is)

yeah, the US is spoiled in terms of tech prices.
I also agree about the whole preference thing, GOOD computers can really set you back, yet I still went for a new PC instead of a console.

I don’t hate consoles (they have their uses), but I’d rather play this on a R3k PC as a powerpoint presentation of pixel than on a console. Until consoles find a better input for any first/third person game I will stick to mouse thank you. I would love a glove (not a love glove) or something similar as an input but I think that’ll emerge when VR/AR tech becomes more commercial.

50gigs = less time and money spent compressing and optimising code. Just duplicate code and make it fit.

Thank goodness the physical format is not 100gigs because you would need 2 weeks to download it. Thats if it WORKS.

To think that Skyrim was 3.8gigs on a DVD 9.

And within the next six years, VR headsets will also be the norm. And six years after that, your VR headset will be the console, that always needs to be online to download the game, patch the game, download DLC, patch the DLC, patch the patch etc.

Sigh… The first 30 years were great.

LOL hence the name “Life Invader” on GTA.
That is also why I prefer consoles. Singleplayer, game done, boom! next one. Now you’re enticed to go online and play co-op, or fix a broken game via downloadable patches or DLC for the missing content.
I had facebook and twitter, and promptly deleted it. I hate cellphones/ PC’s/ tablets for that matter as well. EVERYTHING has become intrusive in some form or the other. I mean, two years ago I went hunting. Wouldn’t you know it, my phone rang. If I were to inherit loads of money, I’ll move to a bloody game farm, and if you want to reach me, phone the landline.

There is no way in hell that a R6000 pc can look as good as a PS4 or XBO. Sorry. Get that out of your head. And consoles are more convenient too.

Now lets see how much space will Metal Gear Solid V take…. ^^ but with all the honesty i dont see the extra 10 GB as a problem, and i cant wait to play Witcher 3 (and hopefully one day after they finish with CyberPunk 2077, a remastered Witcher 2) on PS4 …ty CD Projekt Red you along with handfull of developers havent failed me yet, keep up the good work 🙂 — random gamer —
