The petition to reverse the Xbox One DRM reversal

“You can please some of the people all of the time, you can please all of the people some of the time, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time.” A guy with a cool hat and a silly beard said that once, and he was most certainly right. Microsoft’s DRM policy reversal has made a great number of people pretty happy, as they’ll no longer need to have a perpetual connection to the internet to play their offline, single player games. Others aren’t quite as pleased – and there’s now a petition asking Microsoft to reverse its policies once more.

“This was to be the future of entertainment. A new wave of gaming where you could buy games digitally, then trade, share or sell those digital licenses. Essentially, it was Steam for Xbox. But consumers were uninformed, and railed against it, and it was taken away because Sony took advantage of consumers uncertainty.

We want this back. It can’t be all or nothing, there must be a compromise.”

That’s the gist of the petition, created by David Fontenot on Change.org. And while it may seem that David’s a contender for the Darwin awards, in some ways I do agree with him. some of the policies were necessary for the features Microsoft had planned – and the console’s actually gone a bit backwards. That said, if taking a few steps backwards is better for the consumer in the end, that’s a good thing. Reverse it again though, and people will be forced to call it the Xbox 360.

Are you signing the petition?

Shouldn’t they rather be petitioning Microsoft to rather allow features for those who can use it instead of forcing MS to just bring back the always on nonsense?

Surely people can think a little and realise that Microsoft, one of the biggest and brightest software companies in the world, are quite capable of making a system that is both online and offline?

The petition shouldn’t be forcing online it should be petitioning a little innovation from MS to allow a hybrid system.

Still stand by what I said previously, a hybrid system is possible.

It should have been a hybrid system from the word go. M$ missed a trick there.

They could have very easily implemented the sharing and gifting features with digital versions of game purchases to encourage a digital future, instead they tried to force people into it. It really is a missed opportunity on their part.

Agreed. All the features they took away have a workaround to allow for both.

If Steam can do a hybrid system then so can Microsoft.

They should have a LOCAL DRM CABLE BOX version for the spoiled brats of America and an International version for the REAL WORLD.

Geoff, please don’t advocate this. It’s zealots that drive these views. The fanboys who would blindly follow Microsoft off a cliff. There is no reason MS can’t continue their policies with digital purchases of their games, but they won’t, and there’s probably a good reason for that.

Wait, so the only, and only only, way for the Xbox to provide digital distribution is if the always online crap is working. Am I reading this guy right?
So… Steam only works ’cause it’s also always online? As you can see I’m lost.

Yeah I don’t get it either.

Microsoft can still allow digital purchases to be re-sold etc without a permanent internet connection. But because Microsoft claims it has to be perma-online for it to work, people believe it.

Ag they can stand on their head and dance I won’t even buy it. they can remove everything and still won’t buy it. PS4 FTW. They already stuffed up the console. You must show your best to begin with not the worst and then start showing the better stuff. They already showed me that they more interested in tv features than games. So all in all this is not a gaming console for me anymore

I wonder if David Fontenot wears a red ball in his mouth, because asking for what he is asking you have got to be into some weird stuff. I mean really. That or he is an attention seeking whore. MS does something good (for once) with this Bone, and he wants to kick the proverbial apple cart back over? Lunatic.

Agreed. They most certainly appeared to be as rather vindictive when they removed some of the other actually decent functions. They say they cannot do a workaround yet they ‘flipped the switch’ with the DRM policies? I call bullshit and I am pretty sure they know everyone knows that they KNOW they can do it. Bloody spiteful if you ask me.

Gaming console – an electronic device for playing video games, requiring connection to a television. (Dictionary.com)

You take the video game and put it into the video game machine, that then displays the video game on your tv.
Mandatory installs, mandatory internet connection, mandatory online DRM, mandatory 24 hour checks, mandatory always on camera and mic, mandatory digital library, keeps you from simply taking the game you bought and then just simply playing the game, instantly. Or am i missing the point of a gaming console.

Digital games, to me, means waiting hours to play a old game from the digital library.
Servers, to me means lag. Diablo 3 a single player game, I played with so much lag.,2012. Sim City 2013 WTF. Never again, that’s all I can say.

Can we just play the games that we buy without without the Bilderberg Group fucking with us and humanity.

hear hear. The console only really became constant because it was a means for control. It was rampant Piracy that made the console a better system to code on. Yes the thing started getting chipped but they still had more control than the PC.

Now they are PCs thanks to having even MORE CONTROL due to the internet becoming a standard feature.

Gone full circle. The console is dead. Long live the PS2.

What he is saying is that we didn’t want either DRM or the way it used to be with no progress. We wanted a choice. You could’ve had 2 packages and let consumers choose which one they prefer.
