The new Kinect is going to kill redemption codes

Look, I get that a ton of you do not like the Kinect. And quite frankly, I agree with you, when it comes to the current version of it. Quite frankly, it’s horrible and crap. But the Kinect on the Xbox One? It’s worth the extra cash. Especially when it encourages this kind of slothful behaviour.

Now, I don’t know about you guys, but when it comes to redeeming codes, I’m an absolute failure in life. I just can’t get my stupid fingers to fing in those long chains of consonants and numbers, in order to redeem myself a copy of Ride to Hell: Retribution.

And some days, I have to physically hit ctrl+C, navigate to the Xbox website, find the redemption box, click on it, and then hit ctrl+V. And then I have to click again in order to activate it. It’s freakin’ hard being a gamer!

But the upcoming Xbox One is going to cure me of my effortilism. You see, with the new Kinect, it can actually make QR codes useful instead of being annoying squiggles of website-direction. From the Twitter account of Xbox’s corporate VP himself, Marc Whitten:

Now be aware, it still requires you to physically lift your arm and hold it still so that the code can be scanned, but it’s a massive step forward. Suck it, current Kinect.

Just downloaded a free barcode scanner on my iPhone.
Last time I checked, free was less expensive than not free. ^^

This is a really good site, but the comments section is just up to shit. Every single article seems to generate the same two comments by the same five people – how much they need coffee, and how much the xbox one sucks. Now I love coffee as much as the next guy, and I concede that the xbox one may suck (although I would prefer to wait for some actual reviews of the final products), are there not other things to talk about? Cant you kids expand your horizons just slightly? maybe incorporate other beverages? Maybe throw in a “Nintendo sux too” just for variety? Talk about the weather? I don’t know, anything really to get past sprouting the same crap on every article. Its just a thought.

I made a vague statement about Nintendo not taking risks like, 2 minutes ago. Also, the comments are usually reactions to the articles themselves – If we saw less “Hey look at how great the Xbox One really is guys” and “Look at this stupid thing MS is doing” articles, there would be a lot more comment variety.

Also, don’t mull over the coffee/meme commenters.

I like to read comment sections because often you can get additional information or insights that expand on the article. Usually comment sections are filled with a mostly trashtalk and fanboys, but if you get past that then there are some good points to be found. I’m really not hurt by the opinions of others, I just wanted more. Anyway, nevermind. I see now that what I said comes off as whiney, so I revoke and place the blame on the government.

The problem also is is that for the next 6 months we are in gaming news Neverland. So to entertain ourselves we degenerate to trashtalking and meme posting.

There was some good conversations going on when the consoles were first revealed but the only real news since then has been the cool PS+ deals, Last of Us and MS just having one blunder after another causing some one sided conversations.

You can always post something clever/deep/interresting and start an conversation.

Why would it bother you that people write about those things???? If it doesn’t apply to you then don’t read it, better yet don’t read the comments at all and spare yourself the indignity of having to read how other people interact with each other quite possibly because they know each other outside of this website…. So you are in actual fact just mad because you don’t know the inside jokes????? Really???? That makes a difference to your life????? Jeeeshhhhh…. People come on, if it doesn’t apply to you why let it bother you???? Talk about having to grow up……

There is obviously a lot of negativity in the comment section regarding MS. Any Xbox fans have been completely turned off commenting here, they get snuffed out quickly – because there has been no counter-argument. It’s hardly the fault of the commenters.

Oh, come on. This is the first decent use the Kinect will have. Stop being fucking fanboys about it and just admit it’s a decent way of using it. Redeeming codes is a fucking pain… I just wanna play the game. And don’t come and tell me I’m lazy when most of you bashed the 360 for having multiple discs…. We are all lazy gamers 🙂

And the Kinect does suck, but no one’s gonna watch our ugly faces on a regular basis… Stop with the conspiracies…

I’m a bit confused by this. Are we talking about the codes that come in the game box, you know, the physical copy that MS is trying to desperately to do away with? Or perhaps, if you buy a new game from MS online, you are then sent an email with a JPEG barcode that you then need to scan from your TV using your Kinect? 0-o Codeception

Ja, the codes in the box, or the codes you received from your retailer. It’s hardly a revolution, but it’s a nice little feature if it works 100% the time as advertised. Otherwise I wouldn’t bother walking up to the camera, showing it the code and waiting for it to mess up 10% of the time.

Imagine a world where your Xbox One can recognise your DLC codes, and automatically start the download, without intruding on the living room experience. Whether you’re watching TV or playing games.
