The iconic game to convince you to get a new console

The new-generation consoles from Microsoft and Sony are both pretty fantastic bits of kit, but there’s just one thing that stopping many people from throwing down the cash to get a new system; the lack of a must-have, generation-defining game. Ubiquitious publisher Ubisoft is going to change that.

Ubisoft has announced a partnership with The Tetris Company and revealed its plan to bring the classic Alexey Pajitnov Soviet puzzler to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Yes, the game you’ve been playing for 30 years and is available on every single system that plays games will now be available on your newest ones too.

“We welcome Ubisoft to the Tetris family. I am 100% sure they will develop one of the best versions of the Tetris game ever,” said Henk B. Rogers, the managing director of The Tetris Company about the new partnership with Ubisoft.

Ubisoft co-founder and CEO Yves Guillemot was equally bullish about the new partnership.

“We’re very excited to start working with this world-renowned brand, and can’t wait to combine Ubisoft’s expertise and all the capacities of next-gen consoles to create an exciting new Tetris experience for fans.”

Ubisoft is now publisher of the two very best block-dropping puzzlers on the planet; Tetris and the goddamned incredible Lumines (which is probably still my favourite PSP game).

In its 30 years of existence Tetris has been published by all sort of companies, including Nintendo and most recently EA, who’s put their version of the game on mobiles and last-gen’s consoles. The game was originally created by Alexey Leonidovich Pajitnov and released in 1984. Because it was essentially owned by the Soviet government for so long, Pajitnov only started making money from his work when the rights for the game reverted to him in 1996 and he created of the Tetris Company.

Tetris has, to date, appeared on over 65 different gaming platforms – and soon it’ll be on two more.

Awesome, I can’t wait to play Tetris with Uplay integration. It’s been a dream for so long, finally it’s come true.

In related news, my tailors have arrived with my new white coat & are requesting a fitting.

Now with jump in co-op. What better way to screw up your perfectly placed tile than to have someone hop in and move it at the last second

You’d better get 2 for an SLI config. You’ll need all that power to handle the demanding high-poly block models.

New consoles don’t have enough ram to run snake. Best they stick to gorillas or Qbert..

You know they should really innovate with their new version, basic Tetris has been done too many times. That header image has inspired me. No more is It just a block-building game, now it’s a dramatic fight to save the human race! The blocks are actually invading alien space ships attempting to land on our cities, and you have to fly your super fighter underneath them to destroy their only weak spots. It’ll be epic!

O.o ….blah… Maybe it’s multi-player co-op tetris with customizable skins and dynamic rotation combos! I bet the environment is destructible too and if you pay a little extra you get exclusive access to a bonus piece that fits into any hole! It probably auto-saves every time you drop a chunk, so if you die you can just wait 30 seconds to reload the entire board from scratch. oooooh I CAN wait…
