Sony’s on track to sell 30 million PlayStation 4s by year end

PS4

We all know that Sony’s PlayStation 4 is doing rather well, dominating the console landscape as the preferred console, particularly in Europe. Its continued success has even eclipsed Sony’s best sales guesstimates. In the company’s latest batch of financial statements, they’ve shown that the PlayStation is, apparently, unstoppable.

In the last quarter alone, the system has sold 3 million units, besting Sony’s forecast and eclipsing the 2.7 million units the console sold in the same period last year. It means lifetime sales of the machine to date now sit at 25.3 million – and it’s not even been out for a full two years.

Sony’s ubiquitous PlayStation 2, comparatively, took two and a three quarter years to hit 20 million, so the PlayStation 4 is off to a stunning start. In fact, the only modern console that’s sold quicker is Nintendo’s Wii, but that was a product of its time that spectacularly baited the casual market.

Cumulative live sales

Sony has now revised its expectations for the system. Where they had originally planned to move 16 million PlayStation 4’s this year, they’re now planning to sell through an extra half a million. If their sales hit target, we could see 38.8 million units sold by 31 March, 2016.

Sony’s had a rather good quarter, earning profits of $676 million in net income from sales of nearly $15 billion. Not bad. Not bad at all.

Sonysales

Don’t discount Microsoft though. According to the spotty VGChartz, Microsoft’s console has now hit lifetime sales of over 13 million units. While it’s lower than Microsoft would probably like, the console is outpacing the mighty Xbox 360 comparative sales at the moment – and with a stellar line-up of games and a newly lowered price, we can expect that number to grow considerably.

Console gaming is doing just fine.

If Sony dropped the price just before Christmas it would be interesting to revisit this graph.

I don’t expect sony to do a price drop, but do expect a COD bundle now that they have that deal, MS needs to catch up before Sony need to respond i think.

MGSV = ridiculous PS4 sales. Uncharted 4 = another ridiculous sales.

The simplicity of gamin on it is what I love the most. Have Witcher 3 on PC and it feels like I have to upgrade something every week to get it work 100%, very annoying!

You see, I’ve been a PC gamer for years, decades really, and I would get one because of this, it looks great, the graphical fidelity is amazing and that controller…

Graphics on the PS4 is more than good enough. I stopped PC gaming 15 years ago and only bought a PC gaming rig in March this year… I am still gaming 90% on my PS4.

Holy Moley! That’s an insane deal! It’ll be perfect for me and my wife, I’ve been looking everywhere for deals like this, hoping I could get one with my cellphone upgrade later this year, but nope, nothing….

Hehe, I’ll first need to get rid of my PS3 before I can do this upgrade, otherwise I will be strung up against the ceiling being held up by nothing other than my private bits… Would Olx be a good starting point?

That or bidorbuy. I still have my PS3 because backlog and because PS+ is still bringing games out for it every month. Hell this month is God of War Ascension. Not as good as the previous ones but still pretty decent. Plus I bought the Duke Nukem 3D remaster for PS3 and they did a very, very nice job of it.

I used to be a strictly PC-only person, then my mobo and graphics card went and I got a 360 instead. Watched my friends continue to try and keep their PCs up to date while I just carried on. I haven’t looked back since. Now I’m about to betray my family and let down my loved ones again by jumping ship to PS4, once I’ve made that move I will have loved and hated all types of gamers.

You have a really good point, though I’ve done my PC upgrades at an average of about 5 to 6 years per CPU and mobo, my current system is quite decent and I’m very happy with it. Depending on how you look at you could end up spending 15 to 25k for a rig and not have any games, where with a console it’s a 6k purchase with a premium on games, still though… the PS 4 is the most attractive console at this moment…and I really want one….

You have many PS4 friends out there that will protect you. I, for one, am cleaning the dust off my PC these days and I too have been a PC gamer for years. I love my PS4 and the gamelist currently available is really good with epic games on the way. You wont be sorry, man

PS4 will sell more than the PS2. Yes I know there are more people on earth and the economy and Ebola are contributing factors as well as people that spent all their money during the 2012 Mayan calender thing but it will still be nice to see.
