If you pay attention to specs, you might be well aware that on paper, the PlayStation 4 is the superior machine. It’s got a slightly faster GPU, and is capable of more raw processing power than Microsoft’s machine. According to rumours, the Xbox One may have received a GPU clock speed bump in response.
Earlier rumours suggested that the Xbox One was getting a 12Gb of RAM, giving developers a ton of memory to use on top of the 3Gb that the system’s operating systems use and that it would be getting a faster GPU clock. Random forum post on the internet are generally not viable sources of information though – so this new one, by the slightly more credible Examiner adds a bit of credence to at least some of the rumour.
They say that the Xbox One’s GPU will indeed be on the receiving end of an upgrade, with its clock getting a 100Mhz increase - something that’s been in the pipeline since the Ps4’s reveal, saying Microsoft has "been reacting to Sony ever since the first leaks of both systems." Third parties, apparently, are unaware of the increase because Microsoft likes to "actively spread disinformation to 3rd parties just before reveal to prevent leaks."
They say, however, that the bump in RAM hasn’t been confirmed at all.
"I have heard nothing like that,” their source says “the development kits have 12GB of RAM, but as far as I know the retail kits are locked in at 8GB."
If either of this prove to be true, would they make you more interested in buying Microsoft Xbox One?

Agreed, been saying this all along… MS was caught off guard by Sony’s Feb reveal. Either way, if the initial specs are accurate, the 100mhz bump will only close the 50% performance gap to about 35 – 40%… There is no substitute for parralel processing…

There’s more to this than just a simple “up clock”. The ESRAM in the X1 can now reach a higher “theoretical” output than the DDR5 in the PS4. Take that with a pinch of salt, BUT with DX 11.2 on the way, I wouldn’t be surprised if the X1 delivers the better graphics this gen, again.
Argentil
July 10, 2013 at 15:40
Nah. DX 11.2 is supposed to be coming to next-gen consoles like the Xbox One (ie. PS4 also). That and from what little I understand of the PS4’s development environment, OpenGL has similar functionality already. Excuse my ramblings if I’m using incorrect terminology, this isn’t my strong suit and I’m trying to convey what I read in a Neogaf thread a week ago.
FoxOneZA - X-Therminator
July 10, 2013 at 16:03
Not sure but DX API isn’t native to the OS running the PS4.
Melasco
July 10, 2013 at 16:42
It doesn’t really matter…. It’s about the hardware. The developers can write to the console hardware… What is the benifit of DX11.2 on a console except maybe for ease of porting? Someone explain this because according to me there’s no real benifit of being forced to work through an api on a console…
FoxOneZA - X-Therminator
July 10, 2013 at 17:11
How does one write to hardware without software? Hardware alone is half the job. Software manipulates the hardware to produce graphics. The PS3 has powerful hardware that’s pretty average in real world terms. Why is that?
Melasco
July 10, 2013 at 17:22
One of the main reasons consoles can be optimised to the pixel is because developers can build their own engines(software) that speak to the hardware.. thats what I’m trying to say. Whatever features there may be in dx11.2, it can be done by a game engine developer with access to the hardware… And who better to write this type of api than a game engine dev…
HvR
July 10, 2013 at 17:38
The engine some developers create lives on top of/uses the available API(s).
In the case of the One it is DirectX and in case of the PS4 the developers can choose between DirectX and OpenGL.
HvR
July 10, 2013 at 17:32
In very simple terms the Radeon GPU has embedded software that is developed by AMD that actually implements the fancy and complex graphic features, DirectX and OpenGL are API’s that “lives” on the lowest level of the system OS that provide developers access to the embedded features in the GPU.
Sony has confirmed that they are implementing both an OpenGL and a DirectX API on the PS4.
Melasco
July 10, 2013 at 17:36
Ok cool. Thanks. That makes sense.
Brady miaau
July 11, 2013 at 08:59
I can write code for hardware without an OS or “software”.
It is called embedded development. OS and API and frameworks make it easier, sure, but can slow things down.

Directx 11.2 is exclusively only on Xboxone and windows 8.1.
You cant even get directX11.2 if you have regular windows 8. why would sony have it on a none windows OS???
Argentil
July 12, 2013 at 23:22
Yup, my source was incorrect. That said, OpenGL has offered the functionality 11.2 is introducing for a while now.
This will not affect development between the consoles as Sony’s exclusives will make full use of proprietary development tools, and OpenGL, and multiplatform developers will not bother with the headache of making the extra tweaks, and removing them for PS4.

July 11, 2013 at 06:24
PS4 uses OpenGL and DX11, only Windows 8 & Xbox one gets DX11.2 – Been doing research on this… DX 11.2 is just more efficient and end the end uses less overall resources. Microsoft will always be better at getting power out of there system than Sony. Have you seen MS illumiroom ~ reason for Kinect 2.0? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T49y-mvWCgs
Rags
July 11, 2013 at 15:59
PS4 extended on DX11.1 with their own shaders however. And some of the DirectX 11.2 stuff has been in OpenGL for a while now. So the proof will be in the pudding.

Ja, that’s exactly what the consensus was. Gabe Newell cited better performance on OpenGL over DirectX.
Somewhat old source, but I’ve not seen updated opinions. OpenGL is the better platform, it’s just a harder API to wrap your head around.

apparently the clock speed is 100 % true but adding RAM now wouldnt work unless they can open up all the already made consoles and add 4 gb extra ram lol which I highly doubt they will do, but If they delay the launch then yeah its possible wont make much difference except keep up with ps4 a little more. Dev kits all have 12 gb ram so yeah and Titan fall is apparently having issues

Microsoft being in a position where they constantly have to be reacting to Sony’s every move, is a bad place for them to be and only drives home just how badly they’d bumbled this launch.
Harvey P Cheesewinkle
July 10, 2013 at 23:24
If you do the math the jump in clock speed will hardly matter:
Xbone GPU @ 800Mhz = 1.22 TFLOPS
Xbone GPU @ 850Mhz = 1.30 TFLOPS
Xbone GPU @ 900Mhz = 1.38 TFLOPS
The One would have to throttle the GPU to 1200Mhz to match the PS4’s GPU.
Caspian Rix
July 12, 2013 at 01:45
very unlikely as would cause either long delays or overheaating problems
