Rocket League is the current darling of the Kingdom of Videogames. While there are many reasons for that, the biggest one is that it’s a frightful amount of fun. Right now, it’s bound to the PC and the PlayStation 4 – even allowing cross-platform play betwixt the two. And soon, it could be headed to the Xbox One.
So says developer Psyonix, who assert that the fantasy sports game that replaces footballers’ feet with rocket-boosting supercars, is “absolutely, 100 percent” coming to additional platforms.
Speaking to Gamezone, Psyonix’s vice President of Marketing and Communications of Psyonix Jeremy Dunham said the game should soon make its way to systems other than the ones its already on.
“Now that the game is doing as well as its doing and people really want to see, we’ve focused on this,” he said. “We’re now in a position that we can expand our team. We are absolutely, 100 percent going to other platforms. What those platforms are and when we’ll come to them, I don’t know yet.”
The game was originally bound to those two platforms because of the development team’s size – not because of any exclusivity agreements.
“The number one reason we’re only on PlayStation and PC is because the team is small,” Dunham said. “For the majority of the development, there were only 8 to 12 people working on Rocket League, and we’ve only very recently — in the last few weeks — added a couple of people to that count.”
“The reason that we had to focus is because with that many people, and we’re perfectionists on top of that, we wanted to make sure the game ran well and that it had as many positive elements as possible, and that we weren’t just trying to port it to as many platforms as we possibly could just to try to maximize our profit,” he continued.
“We wanted to make that it was very good, very polished, that everybody liked it, and the only way we could ensure that was to focus on two platforms. Really, it’s a platform and a half because the way the PlayStation tools work is that it makes it a lot easier than say something like the PlayStation 3 to move development on PC where we started our alphas on this game over to PlayStation and start optimizing from there. So that was the main reason we’re only on those platforms.”
While he hasn’t specifically stated it’ll hit the Xbox One, it’s an incredible likely scenario.
“Nothing is off the table,” Dunham said. “If the game can work on the platform and we can responsibly get that game working on a platform, we will never say never to any of the platforms that are current-gen. Anything is possible.”
The question, of course, is whether or not the game will allow cross-platform play on other platforms. We know that PlayStation gamers can play against PC gamers, and there are other games that allow cross platform play between Xbox One and PC gamers. Could Rocket League bridge the fanboy divide and let PlayStation owners face off against Xbox One gamers?
We can only hope.

I am surprised that PS4 and PC can cross play. I mean isn’t the PC pushing how Direct X 17 1/2 is able to offer cross play with the Xbox One?

It’d be an interesting trick to pull off, since MS and Nintendo have never been very interested in cross-platform gameplay. Tehre are a few exceptions on the MS side, of course, and maybe Windows 10 will change it on that front, but Psyonix appears interested in keeping it one community. That means X1 and Nintendo players would HAVE to be able to face off against PS4 players.

While patiently waiting for its release on Xbox One a few of us came up with a version of the game on Xbox One using Halo Forge and GTA V Creator. If you are interested in how they turned out here are the links:
