You win some, you lose some. Not just an adage about taking the good with the bad, it seems to be the only way to describe the ups and downs of NBA 2K16.

Much like last year’s installment in the sports series, there are some excellent moments, but it’s just not a clean sweep to the top of the review score championships.

NBA 2K16 (1)

Before we look at anything else, it has to be said that NBA 2K16 is the most aesthetically stunning and accurate sports game I’ve ever seen. The visuals are so realistic that it can actually be quite jarring as the camera modes and broadcasting look and sound like the real TV experience.

Obviously this too-real aesthetic is shattered from time to time with odd animations or stutters that remind the player that this is actually a video game, but for the casual passerby it would be easy to be convinced that this was an actual NBA broadcast rather than a digital sporting simulation.

NBA 2K16 (2)

Okay, so it looks great, but there’s a whole lot more to NBA 2K16 than that.

White men can’t jump

NBA 2K16 (3)

In a much expanded career mode, NBA 2K16 starts you out as the star player on your high school basketball team, getting wooed by college coaches. From there, you get to play a year in college before entering the NBA draft.

However, the story isn’t as straight-forward as all that – this is a full Spike Lee motion picture experience built into the early part of the career mode, adding story and narrative to the progression experience.

NBA 2K16 (12)

Unfortunately, the story mode also means that players have little to no agency during the early parts of career mode. You can’t choose how your character will respond to what’s going on in his life, nor does anything you do on the court seem to change the actual story, which made me feel like more of a passive viewer than I was hoping for.

NBA 2K16 (11)

It would have been nice to at least have had some dialogue options along the way to make players feel more invested in the experience.

I also felt out of place in my own “family” in the story mode. When you create your “My Player”, you have some head, face and hair customization options available.

NBA 2K16 (10)

Most of these options are built around making your own highly-customised black man with various forms of appropriate hair in afro or dreadlocked designs. However, even though I was playing as a man, I tried to make him sort of represent how I think I would look as a gender-bender (sorry, I couldn’t use the face scan to make myself some sort of face scanned monster).

However, my pale-skinned, mohawked baller looked like a strange adopted son, especially when compared to his twin in the story.

NBA 2K16 (13)

While I appreciate the effort put into the Spike Lee production, I really didn’t enjoy that aspect of career mode. It felt so tired and cliched, and took away from any sense of player agency at the start of the game.

Once the Spike Lee section was over, the career mode is actually a whole lot of fun, letting players figure out how to spend their off-days; a day spent training with your team might improve your balling skills for the next game, but you miss out on an opportunity to get more fans by going to events, or earning more upgrade currency by making your sponsors happy.

NBA 2K16 (8)

It’s the management aspect of the game that adds some cool strategy to the sports experience.

Here’s the scoop they shoot hoop for loot

Don’t expect to just be able to pick up and play NBA 2K16. The controls, while excellent, are never really properly taught, even in career mode. There is no tutorial mode or really even a reliable way to learn what you’re doing right or wrong besides getting into the NBA and seeing your grades go up or down as you call for the ball too often, fail to spread out, suck at defense or just generally fail at making any basket.

Of course, like any challenging game, when you do figure it out, it’s that much more satisfying to sink that tricky 3-pointer or steal from the all-star hoping to score over your head.

NBA 2K16 (9)

Beyond the career mode, there is actually a lot to experience in NBA 2K16. You can earn street cred by playing against others in the My Park, take on the role of a general manager as you create a team and lead them to glory, or even take part in the weird trading card game that still utterly baffles me.

Unfortunately, I’m baffled by it mostly because I had very limited opportunities to play it thanks to the 2K sports servers.

NBA 2K16 (5)

Yes, that’s right, yet again 2K has locked most of the game modes behind the online gateway. You need to be logged into the 2K servers to access most of the game, and those servers were not functional for most of the time I had with the game.

Beyond that, despite absurdly long loading and saving times (online and offline), the server never seemed to remember who I was, forcing me to remake my MyPlayer each and every time.

NBA 2K16 (6)

Luckily my career mode saves were still okay, but it was rather frustrating to continually be prompted to confirm my email address, date of birth and redesign my player’s head every time, as the servers had decided that I had never done that before. Here’s hoping that gets fixed in an upcoming patch.

The game does come with a day one patch, as we’ve come to expect from games in general. However, while you can still play the career mode while offline and wait for the patch, it might not be the wisest idea – your offline career mode can’t be taken online.

NBA 2K16 (14)

This meant that I had to redo the entire career mode just to see what extra elements were added to the experience, while connected to the server.

Do the right thing

Worst of all,the difference between offline and online play is that online play included more instructions and tutorial elements. No, not on gameplay, but at least to explain the various areas and what you could get up to in career mode, etc.

NBA 2K16 (7)

Why was that left out when you played the game offline? Of course playing online also allows you to buy and spend real money on all sorts of boosts and upgrades to make your player less of a flailing idiot at the start of the season.

You don’t have to spend any money, although the RPG aspects of NBA 2K16 do make a big difference and I probably would have progressed to a better team if I could actually sink those baskets and defend against better opponents.

NBA 2K16 (4)

I’m curious if those paid for upgrades also apply to online matches – talk about pay to win, in that case. I’m unsure of how well balanced or laggy our online experience is; when the servers were functional, there was no one online to play against, so I just can’t tell you for sure one way or the other.

There’s been much consternation regarding the review and the game’s servers. While most of our play time was sans servers, they are now online, and 2K has told us that the servers will be live and fully functional once the game is in stores. We will continue to play the game over the course of the next few days,  and report on how the servers fare.

When actually playing basketball in game, or even managing how your player spends his time, NBA 2K16 is a realistic and fun experience. Unfortunately, it's broken up far too often with online issues and Spike Lee cliches.

Good quick review. Really disappointing to hear that the big selling point of Spike Lee’s involvement is limited to the beginning of the game, but I guess it’ll be more enjoyable to not have to deal with those story elements when you just want to get to the next game. Also, why allow creation of a player when you’re only limited to one type of player. It’s like we’ve gone backwards in customization to an altered era where you can only play as a variation of a black man. Is this to try to balance the decade of “choose your unique white male” that most customization games offered?

That seems more likely since you would certainly be able to and wouldn’t make sense to have to re-design your created player for MyCareer after the main story is over. I still find it odd that you have to take up one specific name (or is that wrong too). I would think it would be fairly easy to write around a name and never have the actors in the story say your name. Well, I’ll find out as soon as Best Buy ships my copy off to me. Pre-order from Best Buy gets you $10 back, but if you choose shipping rather than store pickup (by accident), be prepared to wait. I may have it Monday, unless I head over to the store and buy it this weekend.

From another review which clarifies the limitation that this review doesn’t spell out clearly. “You have an African American family and twin sister that the game continually reminds you of, and the in game commentators constantly bring up you coming from the projects in Brooklyn. This constantly breaks immersion if you have a character with differently pigmented skin. And none of this even mentions the casual demonization of all the white men working in the sports business or the simplistic and stereotypical representations of young African Americans that is uncomfortable.” – (User review on Metacritic – SwayzeActual)

I started playing through the my career mode and am pretty disappointed, largely for the reasons outlined in the piece. The lack of control of “Freq” is annoying, because you get to be him on the court but not off it. What’s more frustrating though is the difficulty curve teaching bad basketball habits rather than good ones. In high school games you’re the biggest, fastest guy out there and can make ridiculous shots easily, so you take dumb shots or just blow past guys. It doesn’t teach the fundamentals. Then as the competition gets better you feel slower and miss more shots, shots that would have gone down in the high school section.

I also dislike that it doesn’t matter how you play really. I was getting maybe 3-5 mins a game after I was drafted and they gave me a shoe deal. Everyone, including the team owner, tells you how good you are when really you’re a bench warmer.

I appreciate what they were trying to do, but they should have looked at what made fight night champion work. The story was built around the fighting, so that each fight felt exciting and had weight. This just feels like playing some basketball in between a cheesy spike Lee movie. 🙁

The game does not do a great job of teaching new people basketball fundamentals. I agree with that. I’ve been playing NBA games since NBA Live ’95 on the Super Nintendo. Plus been a b-ball fan since the 80’s, so I don’t need fundamentals of a sport taught to me every year. But the controls are different, as anyone who has played 2K basketball in previous years know that the developers cant help but mess with controls every year. Has anyone played through 2 full seasons. This also should e a review in progress. A true review would be on September 29th. There are some bugs in an early release. Also the review focused on the “MyPlayer” and MyCareer. Was there any mention of the other game modes? MyLeague” which is pure simulation basketball bliss. They added back so many options. This review is lackluster and focused on one game mode which is a very small but overly promoted part of the game. New Playbooks, new adaptive coaching strategies, better on-ball defense….pick n roll overhaul. Please go to Operation Sports dotcom for real input from sports gamer’s. If you don’t like this , then you don’t like “NBA basketball”..

I must admit that hearing the complaints about not having many options to choose from as it relates to creating a white character is shallow. Welcome to the world of being black, and not just as it relates to video games, but pretty much everything on earth sans the ever present limited sports / entertainment tropes. The gaming industry continues to fall MISERABLY short in its representation of characters of color (and women), demographics that make up a large percentage of gamers. Most times its just “play as designated white male character…period.” No options whatsoever. And when the ability to create a player does exist, it usually falls miserably short of a full/fair representation of skin color, hair, aesthetic of people of color.

So to frame a portion of this review around the frustration of not being represented feels like a slap in the face to all of those folks who, for years (and still today) must envision themselves as white. They are RARELY if ever represented. This author missed an opportunity to call the video game industry to task for a much larger slight than for simply not representing white people…in an industry where whiteness is the overwhelming standard, game in, game out, year in, year out. Check that white privelige at the door. Welcome to the experience that most people in the world must deal with on a daily basis.

    Respectfully,
    A person of color.

You must live under a rock. Wake up and look around. Every game I play anymore is nearly centered around a black thug with ganster like lifestyles.

Unless your laying tennis games, I have no clue what your talking about. This isn’t metal gear with a lead character we are talking about. It’s a game mode that is suppose to be about putting yourself in the game. It was poorly scripted with a very limited mind set.

I’d give the game a 9.5, but I have to say this mode was a complete joke. Maybe next yr they expand it and get it right.

I like how he assumes that “black gansters” are even a fraction of what black culture represents. It really speaks to what the original poster even stated. Like its okay that every single game shows off a “White Male” as the hero and forces me to play with them without any changeable options. Ie. Metal gear solid, Uncharted– every major aaa title, should i go on?

It’s a colossal disappointment. Spike Lee showed why his career has been over for the last 15 years.

The GUI is also jacked up and difficult to navigate. They made it counterintuitive, which was cumbersome and frequently had me moving out of sections I wanted to navigate because they decided to print the options at an angle that made me tilt my head to read them.

I was really excited and looking forward to the game, but after 30 minutes of demonic Curry, Davis and Harden and a loser friend who takes selfies at every game I just quit and went to bed.

Unfortunately the smooth jazz and “Livng Da Dream” titling followed me to sleep and created nightmares I wont soon shake.

If you’re promoting one gameplay feature and it colossally fails to deliver, it’s not something to overlook.

Sure, MyLeague is better and there are more options, but it still fails at basic thing custom roster creation and copying players from a legend roster to the free agent pool, or even viewing those rosters in a list.

There are glitches and some missed animation sequences and early, hard audio cuts that cause problems with the experience. The UX is counterintuitive and difficult to get used to. Trying to outfit your player forces you to clumsily navigate through a store and multiple submenus that are non specific and confusing.

The core game has always been the asset, but the entire presentation of that asset to the end user failed. It had a lot of potential but ended up being derivative and cliched. This is why the game doesnt deserve 5 stars this year.

Thankfully they cant screw up the core game too bad. It’s good they mitigated some of the 3cheese and the robo ball-hawk defense. But let’s be real here: this product is not a grand slam. It’s got weaknesses all over and MyCareer took a real step back and despite your attempt to mitigate this aspect its still the #1 played game mode and in that respect it fails.

You didn’t mension MyGM and/or MyLeague and/or MyTeam! Is there a reason for that? These are some of the most played game modes, and have also been improved from what I heard…This was more like a MyCareer review, you should change the title!

Am I the only one that came away from reading this review, and still not knowing much about the game? Pay to play is lame. It’s a cheesy way to make an extra buck, while creating terrible balance issues. Spike Lee…..Honestly bro.. Who the hell are you bowing down on to get you all over these games? And we can expect over half the game to unplayable if servers are down, or not working? Same crappy issues we had with 2K15. You shouldn’t be required to connect to servers to enjoy ALL the game has to offer. How about GM Mode? Is it the same as last year? I like building teams and making them in to Champions as much as any other mode. Can we make changes to budgets at the start off a season? Nothing worse than having the Magic with a staff budget of 3.5 million, and not being able to afford any good coaches or CFO’s to make money, with Playoff appearances, or anything else. Not sure if I’ll jump right out and grab this on Tuesday. Might wait to see a better review.

Spot on accurate with this review. Keep it up! Most other places surgar coated the fact that everything related to customizing your MyPLAYER has been down for days. Gameplay its a good game but the servers and crummy story hold it back

Agree, not trying to be sexist but not gonna pay much heed to a female reviewing a sports game….sorry (not like I would put much heed into a males either). I bet that she gives NBA Live a higher score. To expand, if you are looking for an arcade experience, this game is not for you……..nba jam or something like that may be more appropriate. Here is a great thread for comments http://www.operationsports.com/news/856826/nba-2k16-available-today-post-your-impressions-here/

Define “not trying to be sexist” when you’ve clearly gone to great lengths to be just that.

poor Mycareer story and disgusting online play has made this the last game i’ll ever purchase from 2k. I am asking for my money back from either Sony or 2k games. Someone has to give me an apology and my god damn money back. for those of you who are saying that is ambitious and it is what is, just live with it. No, I have bought this game year after year hoping that the online will be improved. Instead, we get a spike lee directed myplayer mode which was absolutely dreadful. The story was too cliched, monotonous and also, hi, what choices was able to make again? I would look past that, if i can play a decent game online, and I can’t so simply put, if you advertise something and you can’t deliver, give me my money back. I worked hard to deliver what I advertise to my employers and if they receive anything less, I hear about it. I am afraid Ronnie and his crew need to hear about this and its disgusting that they think they can get away with it.

Zoe, or anyone willing to answer. What are the main differences between online and offline career mode apart from the whole virtual currency thing? I was wantde to create an online career mode however i had to download a 2GB file do before i can access the online stuff and the servers. Getting 2GB data is like 17% of the games full price (2GB is R160 or 12 USD) ,so in essence im paying a total of R1060 (77 USD) for the game and the data for me to access all of the games content. Kinda a ripoff of you ask me. I do not know if its worth for me to buy the data to download the files hence spending over 1000 rand (72 USD) on a game or just stick to offline. What do you think? I’m in South Africa btw

Offline career you can still play through the whole Spike Lee story, and then manage your time in the really rather rad career mode management stuff.
Online, you can earn the virtual currency, spend the virtual currency and also tie everything in with the different modes – earn street cred for MyPark, etc.
The offline career mode isn’t bad – it’s actually a whole lot of fun. The only thing is that once you make that offline career mode, you won’t be able to then take it online at a later date when you eventually get the patch and connect to the internet, so if you want to experience the online version you’ll need to go through the whole career mode again.

    MyCareer : The Review
What a horrible, horrible review. She did’nt even talk about any other Mode in the game. So many gameplay changes has been made that she did’nt even care to talk about.
I CAN NOT BELIEVE this review has been registered on Metacritic. Wow, just wow.

These comments are insane. This woman gave her opinion on the game. And most of you are criticizing her on her opinion of the game. If you care so much why not write your own review. Yes most games have a white male protagonist, but in recent years there have been many games with others races taking the lead role. I am a man of color and i enjoy video games. Thank you so much for your review.

No im defending her opinion. And I do not really understand what else you are trying to say but that is neither here nor there. The review itself I do not agree with but I do agree with people bashing her opinion. I can understand where she is coming from slightly. I am a 22 year old African American male and I Have nothing in common with the protagonist.

Don’t get me wrong, im not saying MyPlayer is any good. i think it’s story is downright cringeworthy.
BUT, when im reading a review on a professional gaming website i excpect them to actually review the whole game not just a single mode.

Myplayer is the most talked about component of the game.

I really can’t believe the story mode. I mean if this was the other way around, this game would have never been released, and to me that’s an issue. Isn’t the point of my career mode to able to customize my player etc… I feel like a lot of that has been taken out of my control. The whole dialogue is very simple minded and and paints a stereo type. I am not sure if I want to support this game due to the agenda behind this message here.
