The first Xbox Ones have now hit customers hands and obviously a big worry is whether or not Microsoft has learned from the last generation and will be shipping rock solid day one hardware this time around.
The PlayStation 4 was subjected to a brief panic after release when reports of faulty consoles came flooding in. However after that first week those reports died down and Sony now states their failure rate is under 1% which is excellent.
It’s way too early to see if Microsoft has a similar failure rate but the first failures are being reported with one console apparently arriving with a broken external power supply and one not being able to perform its mandatory day one update.
The video above is actually quite scary.
As you may or may not know the Xbox One needs a day one update to actually work and this gentleman from Australia is trying to do that. He has broadband at home and the console says the network connectivity is perfect but yet it can’t update.
And without that update you seriously can not do a single thing on the machine which is absolutely ridiculous.
Thankfully we aren’t getting ours this year and I’m truly hoping this day one update nonsense is gone from the versions we get because I can only just imagine how many people out there aren’t aware of this requirement and have just bought themselves a massively expensive door stop. 2 reported issues means nothing yet though, we need to wait a few days to see if these issues are a sign of bigger problems to come.
Oh, here’s more.
Here’s one that doesn’t want t accept discs.
And here’s one that got a user banned after doing an Emergency Offline Update.

The dude said it fixed itself
“Hey guys, thanks for posting my video. Just thought I should come in and
let you know that after 11 hours of panic, messing around in router
settings and contacting MS Support on the phone and on Twitter, the
problem solved itself.
I wasn’t changing any settings at the
time, and I wasn’t even in the room. It just moved on to the account
setup by itself. I still have no idea why it wasn’t working, but now, at
noon the next day, I can finally get into Dead Rising.”
The moral of the story, If you do not have internet then you are screwed.

melodicmizery
November 22, 2013 at 10:14
patches and updates = not patches and updates, it means doing a little bit more work to try to finish the product that wasnt finished. but not finishing it, just getting it a little more done. this happens when people dont troll and fanboys say its new give them time. the more and more understanding and caring gamers are the more the company says GOTCHA and then they become so comfortable releasing broke shit that it gets to a point where they just release things that are broke and they have no remorse about doing so

You didn’t need to update the Wii U in order to play games or use the system at all. The xbox one is locked from any use until you update. You can play PS4 games before the update also. Its not just something you have to accept because you like Xbox. Don’t buy incomplete products and they won’t be sold incomplete because then they will get the message that you have decided to wise up. I laugh at everyone that buys a incomplete game and brags about DLC that should’ve been in the game in the first place. ROFL The results you see, are the results of supporting Xbox Live and DLC, its an ad box, spybox, lockbox, and money pit thats missing a money slot to play games.
The Xbox Two might have a credit card reader on it and some of you dummies would complain as you swipe. LMAO When Xbox One is no longer supported, you will be screwed.

They feel that they have the right to restrict you even if you paid them half a grand for the system. The console isn’t about the game though, its about profit first and foremost. The profit from the ads, the profit fromthe dlc, the profit from the monthly fees, the profit possibly from government funding too because if the NSA has access, they most likely receive money for assisting in government surveillance.

the technology we have now is alot more advanced then back in the day,, but still even that isnt a excuse. the buyers should not be the testers. the worst part is they usually know about these problems already and release it anyways. “were aware of the issue and looking into it” weve all heard that before. i remember when battlefield 1943 was released they knew the game had issues and said flat out we arent doing any support for this game. years later and you still cant use mics in that game, nor squad with friends correctly. but hey what do they care they banked a few million dollars from it

That’s the problem, its poison and too many people accept being crapped on. Nintendo gets a lot of bad press but Nintendo hasn’t turn gaming into a scam so they get treated like an outcast. I’ll take the console with the games that are complete and don’t have anything locked or removed so that it can be sold as DLC.

The plan is to make a lot more money off of games beyond the retail purchase so expect to pay more for games you already own, but thats the beauty of it because they will be a lot more fun in this way. It adds to the life of the game and you should be appreciative that they are even making games for us and only charging $10 a month to play them online, I have a good time when I buy dlc because more fun for me with new things and very cheap price for blood and gore dlc in Total Rome 2, it makes the game look great. Just give them money and enjoy the fun man.

It was designed like that straight off the production line. As in it’s setup in such a way that it will not operate until the update is done.
So instead of waiting for final stable firmware versions they simply put a basic bootloader onto the device and are able to start production much earlier.

Ahh, I see. That makes sense, at least for those who have internet access.

Overreacting much? How is this worse than faulty HDMI ports, overheating issues and general hardware failure of reported PS4 issues. A broken power supply is no worse than reported PS4’s shipping with missing screws and hard drives out of the cases. As for the guy with the update, Microsoft has said that they are experiencing launch network issues (just like the PS4) which has now been solved. Yes it sucks that it needs a day one update, but the PS4 also needs one to be fully functional so whats the problem?

I’m just stating it, isn’t that how reporting works…
Failure rate of xbox one now up to 55%
CPU over heating issues apparently..
CPU was never designed to run at 1.75ghz 🙁

Actually, reports referenced are from actual game journalists and news outlets and not some made up nonsense from a guy in a forum. If that were the case then I am stating that tomorrow is Monday and that the DA will win the elections, as reported by me.

I am sorry, A update to make a product work after you have bought and paid for it is ridiculous. Seriously wrong. Fuck Microsoft. Consumer power. That’s what I say. I hope my PS4 does not give me this bullshit when I finally get my hands on it. I have already paid BT games in full.
Jay
November 22, 2013 at 14:44
There is an update for the PS4 when you do turn it on but the update will be a short 5-10 minutes, then you have to go through adding your profile, in put internet password, etc, etc. whole process should be under 15 minutes.
Darren Peach
November 22, 2013 at 14:50
First I have heard of it. I doubt it is Mandatory. My PS3 only ever updated when I go online with it.

November 22, 2013 at 17:12
You can still play games on the PS4 without the day one patch. However, the update adds a whole set of features uncluding bluray movie support. Xbox One, you need the day one patch to do anything.
Darren Peach
November 22, 2013 at 16:39
Smite mofo. While the console will function without the update, here are the features that get opened up. http://www.gamespot.com/articles/playstation-4-day-one-update-available-now-to-download/1100-6416169/
Darren Peach

And, Seeing as the so called Mandatory download is kinda cool. I can download it right this very second onto a flash stick, Only 300 megs which should take 10 minutes.
Dave
November 22, 2013 at 19:20
its actually faster to download from the ps4 network, by the time you’re done setting up your controller it’ll be close to being done updating the console.

Sorry Brother Gamer. I know the feeling, You buy something and you cant use it. AKA Diablo 3 on PC. Imagine you bought a BMW and it only ran if you were connected to BMW’s headquarters via internet.
Gavin Mannion
November 22, 2013 at 13:26
I think it’s more like you buy a BMW but it will only run on petrol/gas purchased from Costco.. fine for millions of people but not anyone outside of America or in the sticks

Give it time. Maybe it will be ok, but there is no room for ventilation. It runs above 140 F.
Finaldeath
November 22, 2013 at 18:02
140 F = 60 C which is well within the ideal temp range for computer hardware.(consoles use modified pc hardware) The only time you would need to start worrying is around 90-100 C or around 200 F which in the case of pcs they auto shutdown when they get too hot to help prevent hardware problems, not sure if consoles do the same however.
David Theriault
November 23, 2013 at 01:26
you could still use the console without the update, only certain features were not available without it. if you couldn’t download it you could still play games.
Dwight Shalders

Has anybody else had the problem that if modem is turned off the console won’t even turn on until the modem is on? I thought Microsoft said that you didn’t need internet connection to use the Xbox One. We have drops out quite regularly so we don’t want the xbox to turn off because of lost connection, which has happened when we turned off modem thinking it would install Forza faster.

the last sentence fuckin killed me! haha love a bit of humour in a serious article man made me smile. i hope both consoles do well im going from a 360 to a ps4 personally as i miss the psone and 2 days to be honest however the 360 gave me excellent times. hope we see some top dog games for the ps soon tho the lineup is shoddy right now, i do miss forza im hoping need for speed keeps me going until GT7 but i doubt it.

November 22, 2013 at 19:04
That’s why you never buy a launch console for that very reason. 1% of Sony Console PS4 failed looks like I am not spending $600 for xbox one and games. I bet Xbox One has 2% or 5% or maybe 10%
Brian Murphy
November 22, 2013 at 19:24
As Gavin said, still way too early to tell if this is a systemic issue, or if it’s just new technology in it’s infancy. I’m sure everyone will be looking at both machines very carefully over the next 2 years to see if there’s a real hardware issue. For now, just enjoy your games!!! And for those with bricks, take solace in the 1 year manufacturers warranty, and hopefully you’ll be gaming sooner than later!
Welcome to next-gen folks! 🙂

Anytime you have mass manufacturing of electronics there is always bound to be a percentage of defective units. You take that risk when you are an early adopter aka beta tester 😛

Just got my Xbox one. Hooked it up. No video signal detected. Hrm. Don’t panic. Adjusted the cable checked the input. In the end tested all 3 HDMI ports on the tv, tried a different cable. Nothing. Hooked up the Xbox one’s cable to my PS3 and…..Houston we have a picture. One dead Xbox one. Currently waiting on Xbox chat for some support. Sounds like I’ll be waiting for a replacement. I hope they make it fast….

Unfortunately mine came with a faulty graphics card. Couldn’t render vertexes properly, so ended up with huge black rendered polygons spiking all over the place. Rung support nothing could fix it (obviously) so having a new unit shipped to me via Advance Exchange program next week. Rather annoying considering I spent £600 in total on the damn thing and can’t even use it lol.
