FFD: Is Microsoft back in the game?

For a while there, it seemed like the next-generation console war was over before it even began. Sony had already won gamers over with its gamer and developer-minded console, and then Microsoft scored an own-goal by saddling its next-generation console with consumer-unfriendly DRM. And then that changed.

In one of the most amazing corporate about-turns seen in any industry, Microsoft dropped all of it. The online authentication, the 24-hour checks, the restriction on used and loaned games. All of it. Already, it’s had a significant impact. Die-hard Xbox fans who had sworn fealty to Sony have once again pledged allegiance to Redmond. Internationally, pre-orders for the Xbox One have skyrocketed, and analysts have predicted that the Xbox One will match PlayStation 4 sales figures when both systems are released later this year.

Of course, the situation is a little different in South Africa. while Sony’s machine is set for local release this year, Microsoft’s Xbox one isn’t. We don;t know when it’ll be coming, but it’ll be in 2014; so there’s still the chance that those eager to jump in to next-gen will go for the PlayStation 4. There’s also the issue of price, and the Xbox One is still $100 more, thanks to the bundled Kinect.

Still, the tide has changed, and momentum is swinging in Microsoft’s favour right now. But is it enough? Has the policy change brought Microsoft back in to the game, or is it all a little too late?

What say you, fine folk? Are you once again stuck with the first world problem of having to decide which console to get, or are your minds already made up?

They gave themselves a fighting chance but with limit country deployment, higher price and being less game centric I think PS4 is going to take the biggest world wide share

Xbone will probably still be the US favorite with its extra sources of incomes via services it is still going to be a commercial success.

If that is the case they are going to loose (just like Apple market share is currently declining), world wide market is increasing making the US a decreasing world wide market share by percentage. In 2012 the US was already down to 40% of the world wide gaming market.

I will agree here. Sony’s exclusive showing this year for PS4 was incredibly underwhelming – by Playstation standards. Next year, once all in-house studios have shifted to next-gen, we will have an explosion of interesting PS4 titles.
I’m surprised at just how many third-party exclusives Sony lost this gen. Microsoft must have delivered on their billion dollar promised of exclusive content.

I agree, but if MS has gone “all-in” with their showing of exclusives at E3, that also wasn’t really impressive at all. Both still lacking in compelling exclusives. But, the next gen hasn’t even begun yet. Still a far far way to go to be able to judge how this will turn out.

Expanded service and Free games PS+ service and Sony reaching out to indie developers I think you have a bigger chance of that unexpected blow your mind gem being released on the PS4.

AAA (bar 1 or 2 exceptions a year) will always be available on both.

Also 75% of the games shown at E3 by MS are 1st on Xbone and not xbone exclusive.

I think a lot of damage has already been done and there must be people out here who feel that the fix was too easy and so it can be patched back to how it was just as easily.

Some feel betrayed and won’t go back.

But, I think their choice has still put them back in the game and made them a real contender again. I do feel that they missed a golden opportunity to do something unique and different though….

No it’s not. Microsoft don’t see that is part of their strategy. They only worry about the US market. If you look at the current gen, and remove the US sales all together, then the Xbox is way behind Sony and Nintendo.

MS knows exactly where their loyal fanbase is. And that’s in the Good ‘ol US of A.

If I was in the market for a console I would chose Sony. I don’t care about extra features, I care about gaming – both consoles are fairly evenly matched on that point. Where Sony won this for me was with far superior communication & showing more interest in gamers. MS has been acting like a spoilt fat kid demanding cake for dinner, then sulking after being forced to eat some veggies first.

I’ll be getting the PS4 personally, for the following reasons:

    1. The exclusive games of the current gen showed me how dedicated Sony was to gamers, even late in the generation.

    2. I’m not sure that I trust MS, and it was a dick move in the first place to enforce DRM.

    3. The price makes a difference.

    4. The whole cloud processing thing, which would make even certain single player games online only. (Dead Rising seems to suggest this.) Also, the PS4 is more powerful and thus will be “on par ” (I use this terms loosely, and in direct comparison to the price) longer with PCs.

    5. I don’t like advertisements on my UI. The “extra TV features” of the XB1 also have no appeal to me.

    6. The Xbox exclusives never really appealed to me (Halo, Gears and Forza).

    7. Naughty Dog and Gran Turismo.

    8. I hate the Kinect.

Later on, I might pick up a XB1, but only after a price drop.

I share a lot of that reasoning, but the power of the cloud is a pipe dream. It’s a marketing buzz word in microsoft’s hands. As I said in another comment thread, cloud computing, in practice, is highly limited. The limitations are so severe, that you would be optimistic to expect cloud computing to handle small AI or physics calculations. They are lying, basically.

I encourage anyone to read up on cloud computing to get a better idea of what is actually possible with today’s technology. A 5% performance boost on a perfect line is the reality.

I agree with Spathi on points numbered 3, 4 and 9. Points 1 and 7 I think, from what MS have shown, will be different next gen. 2… Don’t trust Sony either, only Nintendo has my trust. I like Halo and Gears, and their other studios could come with with some new franchises that I will like. As of now, if I HAD to buy at launch, it would be a PS4. But I won’t buy one until at least 2015, and so by then I’ll be able to compare between the two properly.

Sony has put a lot of energy into this idea that they never intended to implement DRM. If they were to introduce it halfway through the generation, there would be outcry, and they would be back in 2007 after all the goodwill they’ve fostered. If anything, they will hold out until next gen if their competitors are using DRM, and getting by without being vilified.

The only distinctive thing I saw from MS regarding their cloud server was the Drivatar (man that is bad) thing in ForTza 5, and it just looks like a fancy and new Gran Turismo B-Spec mode. ;P

Ja, it is B-Spec with a twist. I loved B-Spec, and having adaptive AI sounds really kewl. We’ll see how much of it is show-talk in a few months, but I believe the basic idea is there: the inclusion of the cloud is unnecessary though.

I think there was a lot of show talk in that press conference. As far as I’m concerned, there are on such thing as an Xbox One and only Nvidia powered Window 7 PCs.

Prefer’s me Forza’s and Halo’s with a touch of cloud power BUT only until a price drop. Gamer’s are hungry for a next-gen console and they’ll go where it’s cheaper.

Come next-next-gen, Francis well Francis…would he even still exist by then?

OK im gonna go out on a limb and ask what might be a stupid question or maybe something brilliant. For this stupid brilliant question im going to use battlefield 4 as a example. Ok Pietie buys battle 4 for xbox 360 and paashaas buys battlefield for xbox 1.When playing online one a BF server would One and 360 have there own servers or would Pietie be playing against paashaas.

It would become very expensive for EA / Dice if each had there own bf servers or would it be like Codemasters and have a p2p where one player is the host and the rest try to connect

The same goes for PS3 and PS4

i posted the question in a email to the higher archy of the site but alas no response not even a automated one to say Thankyou Hamster for you Brilliance we will squiz through the email and get back to you

We can only speculate. I would guess they’ll be separate for Xbox One due to server restrictions, and up to the developer/publisher for PS4.

they would have the own separate servers due to the Xbox 360 and PS3 only been able to support 24 people per a game

not really, as people move move over from this gen to the next, devs will shut it down as the need for them decrease. Games like BF3 cannot run without a server due to the ability to change rules in an instant and no P2P interface. They also rent servers, so they pay less to run it. Games like Gears of war on the other hand can do P2P and also have servers. Epic games still runs GOW3 servers even though GOWJ is out. They loosing money but there are 6 times the amount of people playing GOW3 than GOWJ so it shows that devs dont mind as long as the gamers are happy. (based on opinion)

It definitely puts them back in the race, but I have no intention of getting an xbox one. I’m pretty sure there’s a flood of gamers who suffer from goldfish memory, who’ll forget what was really at stake.

I just don’t trust Microsoft, I don’t think they’ll keep their word. and I have a feeling once they have a decent install base for xbox one, they’re going to revisit the DRM issue. It won’t be as restrictive, but they’re definitely on a mission here.

Most definitely, I don’t buy the claims that the cloud adds to processing power, it certainly didn’t for SimCity, (and while the technology might actually exist), the biggest issue why I don’t believe their claims are latency and bandwidth.

I think what they’re tying to sell us is the promise of the cloud, instead of the current reality – it doesn’t work and currently it’s about DRM.

The real question is, is the R1000 difference worth it for the vastly superior controller?

well, that’s my current mental debate, chances are I’ll probably still grab the PS4 just because the allure of next-gen will be too hard to resist when the PS4 hits this year.

You should try both controllers before making a decision. Some people prefer the new PS4 controller. Rumble triggers do sound neat though.

Have had time with both, and they’re both damned cool – honestly. it’s really going to be a tricky decision now that the DRM policy has changed. A week ago, it would have been the PS4, easy peasy.

Would you say that the new PS4 controller is FPS friendly? Or will that still be a fight won by XB. Oh, and as a sidebar. Did you have a look at the TV setup you guys got time with the new consoles? 1080p, 60Hz? Guess my question would be do you we need to upgrade to like 100-200Hz to really appreciate the new hardware?

    I’ve pre-ordered my PS4.

    My reasons:

    PS+
Backward compatibility to my PS3 games via Gaikai.
    It’s what I’m used to.
Scared of possible spyware and DRM on Xbox One.
Lack of SA support and delayed release for Xbox One.
