Fallout 4

FALLOUT 4 BRO! Easily one of the biggest game announcements of not only June, but E3 as well. And not only was the game announced, but so was its release date. Which is this year. WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE?

Everybody knew that Fallout 4 was on the way, but to get a proper release date of November 10? That’s icing on a Belgian chocolate cake. And it’s also odd, as most games that are announced these days are done  around one and a half to two years before they’re due for release.

Building hype and buzz, of course. According to Bethesda’s Pete Hines via GamesRadar however, the reason behind this announcement was simple:

The simplest answer was that we felt like we could.

According to Hines, high expectations helped shape that decision as well:

If we didn’t feel like that was enough time to generate the excitement that we expected and the interest that we wanted, then we would have announced it earlier. So part of it is because we felt like it was a big enough title that we could get away with it.

Although taking this path, was also more fun for Bethesda. “Part of it is because it’s way more fun” Hines explained

As opposed to: here’s a press release and here’s a trailer and, I don’t know, in a couple of months we’ll show you some stuff. Part of it is getting the game to the point where it’s all done enough to be able to show so much of it.

We’re pretty close to being done, which you have to be if you’re going to ship in five months.

It’s really fun to get this far into development and not say anything and then go ‘Boo! Here’s all this stuff. Here’s what we’re up to’. Which isn’t even all the full monty it’s just a big wide picture.

I kind of agree. I’m more than complicit in the crime of feeding the industry hype machine, which does get tiring after doing so for around two years on a single game. But seeing a studio not only announce a game, but confidently give it a nearby release date? That’s kind of inspiring.

Hehe. They always have bugs, but I’ve never felt them to be problematic. Often they’re just funny. Besides, you can’t expect a game of that size to be perfect. Skyrim had many bugs too, but who cares? It was a great game 🙂

Yeah no bug was game breaking, which can’t be said for some games that can’t even fit into the pinky finger of Fallout 3…

Well I have to say that the PS3 version of FNV Ultimate edition becomes unplayable after 150 hours of game-play and all DLC’s finished 😀

Funny enough, Skyrim was the first Bethesda game where I actually encountered a quest ending bug… Morrowind, Oblivion, Fallout 3 – played them all, for well into the 200 hour mark, and never had 1 issue. Read about plenty, but never experienced them.

But yeah, Skyrim made up for it with quite a few quest-ending bugs… Still haven’t completed the Mages’ Guild quests thanks to the Arch-Mage dying, but everyone acting like he’s still alive, thus robbing me of the necessary conversation options in which to further the quest. Read online it’s quite a common bug and you need to reload a previous save… Which I tried… A lot… Some as far back as 10 hours prior… And it didn’t work… 🙁 One day I’ll replay you Skyrim and you will submit your Mages’ Guild quests to me!!

            June 26, 2015 at 12:19

Didn’t have any problems with Skyrim… Used all bug-fix mods that exist and never had problems although I did maybe use console commands to finish some quests that couldn’t be finishes…

Ah, you’re on PC. Nice! I’ve heard it looks spectacular on PC with mods activated. Yeah, I played it on console (XB360), so no such luck with mods for me. Still loved the game though! Have always loved Bethesda’s open world games.

Have a serious itch to play Fallout 3 again – for sometime now! If only I can finish Witcher 3 (I think it may be an unfinishable game – there’s so much to do!). 🙂

I have an awesome IDEA for an awesome epic launch 😀 They actually blow up a nuke somewhere 😀 or even better everywhere 😀 and the nukes are filled with Fallout 4 games that are then blown to everyone 😀

Oh I can already imagine it… Me waking up on November 10th surrounded with nuclear fire and a free copy of Fallout 4 buried all over my house and grass…

PS. Does anyone know if Bethesda is showing anything on quakecon? I mean it’s a zenimax convention so no Bethesda showing Fallout would be just a shitty PR move… They should milk the shit out of any PR possibility they get 😀

A collectors edition’s value is in the eye of the beholder… This is true here more than anywhere… I’ve been an avid Fallout fan since I played FA1 so an actual pip-boy(no matter the gimmicky plastics) is something I dreamt of 😀 it will be a good addition to my pip-boy alarm clock 😀

          • Captain JJ Browmehn

            June 26, 2015 at 11:01

            Agreed completely.
I’ve also been a Fallout fan since day one, but for me it just looks a bit too cheap. I’ve seen better looking pip-boys made by fans that you can buy online for a quarter of the price. For me I don’t care if it’s official or not, I just want it to be as accurate and proper as possible. But that’s not the case for everyone, I understand that.

I understand the value you can see in this. Like you say, it’s in the eye of the beholder. I’ve got a few bottlecaps that cost me way more than they should have, but I just wanted them so badly. 😀

What a sleeper hit. Upgrading during the linear story progression was cool. It just had something that the others dont. Maybe they get to focus more on the detail and character development because of the linear design. I got all 1000AP for that game 🙂 No DLC, no redeem codes, no cut content, in-game skin awards, no on-line trophies.

Just a fully envisioned product that surprised Rocksteady more than the industry.

Yeah it’s apparently a joke (still an actual DLC), but a joke DLC the creators of Dying Light made in light of the Red Bull(shit) quest DLC from Destiny 😀

I am interested to know if Zenimax are going to start soon on a Fallout equivalent of Fallout New Vegas, ie between 4 and 5. Lets hope so.

Really doubt it 😀 Still… And I’m spit-balling here… Fallout: London or… Or Fallout: New York(even thugh it’s probably completely destoyed – although unconfirmed) 😀 I would say Fallout: Moscow but Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light have done such a great job I just don’t see Fallout in Moscow 😀

Also when talking about launch bugs and stuff… With such a strong modding community as the Fallout Series and Elder Scrolls series have, any launch bugs will be fixed in a few hours of launch… even if the G.E.C.K isn’t released they will find a way… They always find a way…

And on the theme of mods… Do I even need to say anything… The mod scene within these games is as strong as the force is within Anakin Skywalker or if you aren’t a Star Trek fan(error intended :D), the mod scene is as strong as the impact Chris Pratt made on the movie scene in the last 2 years… It’s epic! The people behind most mods are really good and hard working people and Bethesda supports them 100%! Hell they are even pushing console mods… Seriusly which publisher is so open to modding?

The community behind Bethesda games is just incredible. One of the best out there.

This is how you sell games, develop the game to near completion, test it to the extent that you know you can show gameplay footage without having hiccups, then announce it… Not the other way around….

Also an important part is actual game-play… So many publishers now just publish a pre-rendered trailer not even using the games engine… Look at the first trailer of Fallout 4, it uses the game engine with all it’s flaws… And the showcase showed over 15 minutes of actual game-play spanning more than just one part of the game…

Makes me sad… I have to wait more than 4 moths to get the game and they have shown so damn much… I mean if they would show a minute more it would just be torture 😀

I remember watching twitch at 5AM (since I’m from Slovenia) waiting the whole time to see Fallout 4 and Pete starting to say “I’m sorry to say we’ve come to the end of the showcase…” and then people starting to scream “What about Fallout!!!” it was EPIC 😀

Oh yes, that Bethesda showcase was hands down the best E3 showcase ever… But then again, it’s Bethesda, they are in a league of their own….

Absolutely… I mean many people were like “Bah the graphics look shit…” But those people are just being douche bags, The finished product is going to be polished and awesome. Still For a game of that size any graphics would do 😀 even 8-bit 😀

Staying on theme this time… I’m really really curious what Todd and the guys are doing on the game currently 😀 Since I saw and analysed everything from the E3 showcase here are 3 things I’d like for them to change/optimize:

    1. Change the GUI – I mean the ammo counter was just funny 😀
    2. The whole dialouge part of the game needs to be expanded, by this I mean I wan’t to see it being more like Mass Effect where you at least have more options than 4 reply options…
    3. Graphics candy for PC users 😀
