Faith’s got some new moves that “add to the freedom” of Mirror’s Edge Catalyst

Faith

Mirror’s Edge, a video game that made me feel queasier than that one time when I was stuck on a pirate ship that used simple harmonic motion at a dodgy theme park, is finally, finally getting that sequel that you’ve all been waiting for.

Newer! Prettier! More “you gotta have Faith” puns! It’s not just an expanded game and world for Mirror’s Edge Catalyst either, as the core dynamics of the title are getting a massive upgrade with Runner Vision.

Essentially, this allows players to plot their own path and momentum by highlighting the route needed to traverse the city around them. A route where everything is just waiting to be Peter Parquored.

“No object in the environment is there just to be pretty,” DICE senior producer Sara Jansson  said to GamesMaster via GR, while also revealing how Faith’s expanded moveset would fit into all of this.

It’s there because it’s a gameplay object. It’s something you interact with.

In the first game you could only springboard from certain objects. In Catalyst, you can do it from any object of the right height.

It adds to the freedom.

Mirror’s Edge is still one of those that I just cannot play. Not because of any pre-conceived notion to its quality, but because of the fact that five minutes with it results in me losing weight by spewing last night’s supper thanks to the extreme vertigo that it somehow manages to saddle me with.

And by the sound of things, I’ll be entering the seizure procedure with this sequel and all of those highlighted paths that go hand in hand with the wobbly camera physics and HURP. You’ll have to excuse me, as just thinking about it makes me want to reach into my collection of airplane white paper bags.

Still, at least somebody is bound to have fun with all that acrobatic gameplay. HORP.

Though the premise of Mirror’s Edge was really cool I didn’t enjoy it much.
The auto-save function was a joke, for starters.

I think that’s the most that “EA” and “freedom” has ever been mentioned in the same sentence.

The Golden age of EA 2008. First game was fantastic. Back when EA were experimenting and on top form with Dead Space 1, The Saboteur, Brutal Legend and Mirrors Edge.

Then they had to compete with COD by pumping all their resources into MOH and B3. 🙁

Then DRM, Micro transactions, redeem codes, always on Sim City before fliking the switch that they said could not be flicked to make Sim City off-line.

I suppose the only reason why Faith finally got the sequel that she diserves is because on-line gaming is now the standard.

What a sleeper hit and I think it was competing with RE5 at the time, by 2 months. Everybody was drooling over the 60fps and super hyped after RE4.

Then Dead Space came along and improved the sales of man nappies.

To think that EA almost canceled it halfway into development and the director had to fight his ass off to get the project the go. He left after 1 and just made Destiny.

DEAD SPACE the silent protag 🙂

DS2 was still okay, except that you always ran out of ammo and it ended up making the game less scary and annoying as hell.
          DS3 wasn’t a Dead Space game.

Like Alien DS1 has horror, then the sequel turned it into an action flick. I suppose the 3rd was what Prometheus is lol

Apart from the terrible main actress I am one of the few who somewhat liked Prometheus. (somewhat). At least it did better justice to the Alien story than Predator 2 did to that franchise.

I watched Prometheus in the cinema and you could just hear the murmurs of people going “Are they seriously doing this?” when that thing rolled.

I still think the main actress is more disappointing that that very scene. It would have been nice if they had someone with facial expressions play the lead role. That would really have given the movie a different spin 😉
