EA’s online pass won’t be back

Terminated

In May this yea, EA abandoned its online pass system. It was either some unfortunate timing or a curious coincidence – because Microsoft’s Xbox One was revealed shortly afterwards to contain built in DRM. Now that Microsoft has backpedalled on those DRM policies, you might expect EA to change its mind too, and bring the online pass back from the dead.

Only they’re not.

“…no change to our decision to discontinue Online Pass. It is dead,” EA’s senior director of corporate communications John Reseburg told Polygon. “As we said a few weeks ago, none of our new EA titles will include online pass, and we are removing it from existing games as well. Nothing else on today’s news, but did want to be clear that our online pass decision was based on player feedback, and there’s no change.”

Maybe something really has changed for the better in the gaming industry, and some of the giants really have started actually listening to its customers.  what this is slowly bringing to light though is the fact that Microsoft’s original DRM policies weren’t in any way publisher mandated, and was entirely their idea. that, I think, will make used games a healthier ecosystem – and second hand users wont be charged twice.

And maybe, just maybe, EA won’t win that award for being the worst company in America for a third year running.

We’re going to be paying to play online anyway, so I guess some profit sharing is going round.

They have also previously stated that it didn’t make financial sense as well and that was one of the reasons they scrapped it. I doubt very much they even bothered with customer feedback in making this decision.

EA can’t help themselves, they’re going to screw up eventually and be back in the running for worst company in America. Three’s a charm as they always say!
