“Battle of the Next Gen”– the Xbox One is in trouble

Microsoft’s decision to scrap the Xbox One’s controversial DRM and perpetual internet connectivity has certainly helped turn the overwhelming tide of negativity that’s surrounded the system since its reveal in May. Before the backpeddling, just about every Xbox  gamer had sworn allegiance as a PlayStation neophyte – but that’s obviously changed. Just how much?

Not nearly enough, if Gamespot’s “Battle of Next Gen” Twitter battle is any indication. As of writing, over 75 000 have tweeted using a hashtag to declare their allegiances – and the odds are overwhelmingly leaning in the PlayStation direction.

In fact, 88% of respondents have allied with Sony in the next gen war. Even the Xbox’s home turf, the USA, has an 89% to 11% split in Sony’s favour. The only territory that seems to have any sort of Xbox favour is Saudi Arabia, with 43% of its tweeters sticking with Microsoft’s Xbox One.

Here’s a map; showing PS4 allied territories in blue, and Xbox ones in Green. Do not adjust your sets; there is nothing wrong with the picture..it’s just that nobody on the planet seems keens on the Xbox One right now.

allegiance

Even Switzerland seems to have chosen a side. On which side of the fence are you sitting?

It’s like Android, the only people that can be bothered to be vocal about it are the people with some kind of gripe. We won’t know until a year after they have launched.

Yes, all these things are only “indicators” until the releases actually happen. I think, if I HAD to choose now it would be PS4, but like so many others that are not vocal, I will wait until I have experienced both (hopefully at rAge) before I make a final decision.

Yet ANOTHER poll, ANOTHER article seeking to grab the headlines about the console “war”. Is this really the state that gaming journalism is in? Firstly, how old do you need to be to have a Twitter account then? Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had many really good insightful and well thought out discussions with pro PS people and despite it’s shortcomings I do respect and see value in the PS4, but it’s just not for me sorry! Luckily I’m old enough and wise enough to make my own decisions and think for myself and decided to go with the Xbox one just after they dropped their controversial always online DRM ideas and moved away from all the TV features during E3 by showing tons of awesome games and exclusives and very few Indies cause me don’t like really. Sony is now pushing for always online DRM with it’s new 4k video media player and by the looks of it also looking to move into the TV playing field with the reactivation of the Playstation TV patent. Go read the patent, it’s cover everything from Cable top box integration to ordering pizzas online…sounds familiar? . Anyway, what really made up my mind was the absolute trash and dribble most of the PS fans post on all these forums. How old are they, are they even the salary earners and decision makers in their households? I really want to distance myself from the likes! My suggestion is do not read all this trash, do not read only one review or one site for that matter. You have the internet, now go and use it, do some research and make up your own mind whether it’s Xbox or PS, respect other peoples views and most of all have fun playing games! ????. (sorry about the pic, couldn’t resist!)

most of us think for ourselves . if we want the One we will get it.if we don’t then we won’t.most people don’t like the One. we are all entitled to our opinion . we do bash the One and if Sony did the same we would bash that, that is the internet…if we want to get on your high horse and call this trash, do it elsewhere , as you clearly can’t practice what you preach……

So you really can’t see where Sony is heading with their Playstation TV patent and always online DRM for their media player? It’s exactly EVERYTHING you hate about the Xbox!

Depends on what their comments are generally, but let me say I never called this site trash. I was referring to forums in general (IGN, Gamespot, Eurogamer etc. etc. etc.). Go there, read the forums and tell me I’m wrong! Never read so much garbage in my life and for some reason most seems to be coming from the PS camp? Really I just want a forum where we can debate and discuss in a civil manner. Maybe I’m just expecting too much, sigh!

I’ll tell you what, from what I have figured out over the year and ‘n half that I have been coming to this site is that most of the regulars are actually older guys and even some gals that are working class folk just like yourself…. And in that patent you bring up is there anything that says we will force it down your throat like XBONE wanted to do or will it be a feature that I can activate if I so feel inclined? I suspect it is the latter and not the former?!?! I am 28, have my own business now for the last 4 years and I sure as hell make the money in my house, and I own a PS3 and the Xbox 360 and have had 4 Xbox 360’s since 2005 and only one was replaced by MS the rest I bought. I only bought my PS3 last year so that I could play Metal Gear Solid 4 as MGS 2 was my favourite game on my PS2 and I wanted closure. The XBONE did do more harm that good when they tried to force people to do what they wanted and not what the people wanted. They came close to ESKOM heights of stupidity with their reveal!!! So if PS4 can see the good in pushing TV but not making it compulsory for us all then I don’t see the problem in that. Let them make their service better and more rounded, that is what a business should do…. But let me decide whether I want to use it or not and we won’t have a problem!! As for respecting your views, we all do but surely you can’t tell me that at $100 more with an eye that is always on in your living room that will in essence track everything you do and wear is the console you would want? But let me tell you if it is then so be it man, what you spend your money really doesn’t make a difference to me just like if 88% of the world want to buy the PS4 but you don’t should it not make a difference to your world…. And yes I have a twitter account as well, if you’d like to come an see what I use it for you can find me at @kasperbotha I mostly rant about sport and rage with sports writers about referees and Ausies… Man I loved the Lions crushing them on the weekend and the Cheetahs reaching the playoffs for the first time!! If you want a XBONE then do it man!!

I understand your frustration I really really do … but if you come out guns blazing don’t expect any rationality from anyone. If a forum is venomous then leave it or try and reason with them, but there have been many calm collected debates here, look at Melasco’s comment for example …so turn it down a notch 🙂 we are all gaming buds here so let’s just have fun 🙂

The fun is in the fight. We need to disagree. If it wasn’t for disagreements and nagging the Xbone would still have had DRM

The wonderful thing about living is a free market system is we get to vote with our money every single day… And as frustrating as some may find these debates, this is where products can succeed or fail.

As a business analyst, I’ll never just buy something, and these type of forums is always a good place to get opinions about products like the new consoles, and even if fanboys talk crap, you’ll quickly see where the money will go…

My rands will vote for Sony, and DRM has little to do with it, I just believe that the PS4 offers better value, and I like the games more… I also believe that the majority of gamers will buy PS4, which will drive down their prices in the long run, AND give them more resources to work with, meaning more content… I did my research, now time will prove my point…

Have you ever played World Of Warcraft…. Most of those players are really annoying… Yet 10mil + People vote every month to play it… Many of these “PS fans” are just very passionate gamers, who will also vote Sony… I also get annoyed when people post absolute junk, but I quickly remember that this joined passion for games, regardless of platform is what will drive our future of gaming!

      Long Live Play 🙂

Great products compel you to talk about them with confidence. Sony were brilliant this year hence the support. It would NOT make sense if they fail at the end because..? We don’t know either. But for MS to switch between agreements, presentations and old draft policies it’s just chaos.

I’ve been a gamer for close on 25 years now. And during current-gen I’ve been lucky enough to own both an Xbox360 & PS3. I got my 360 first and it has been my console of choice when it comes to cross-platform games.

It’s been with heightened anticipation that I’ve watched MS & Sony reveal their next-gen platforms… And I honestly feel Sony have the upperhand. So much so that I’ve pre-ordered a PS4. And even with MS reversing their dumbass DRM & “always online” policies, I’ve seen nothing that makes me want to change my pre-order decision. Perhaps MS will come back fighting, but for now… “Winner palmtree!” Or Sony, in non-Kickboxer lingo. 🙂

A Long Long Time Ago, in a Decade not to far behind us (I think it was called the 90’s) there was a war. SEGA SATURN and the PS ONE. One of sega’s marketing slogans back then was: ” Stations are made for trains…”. Strange, the only time Saturn gets mentioned these days is on Discovery Channels space documentries. Sony have walked the walk and talked the talk, low and be hold, they are still here and Sega’s titles (like sonic) are featuring on PS format. How long before some title like FORZA will do the same. Sony is heading into its 4th gen. Thats someting to be said for them. If my poor salary could do it, my whole house would consist of Sony products, hell my cars sound system and gamertainment already does. Just saying, nothing aimed at the others…

There comes a time in your life when you realise that you’re far more interested in what you think about something than what everyone else thinks, that you’re the wrong side of 30 to give much of a shit about all the sound & fury on the internet about which console has won the war before it’s even started. Those peoples opinions just stop mattering to you

You just grow out of that kind of thing I guess, and having the income to eventually buy both probably changes your perspective a lot. Because what it’s really about at the end of the day are the games on each platform. They’ll both be good consoles, they’ll both do some things right and some things wrong, and will both have good games available for them. Forget the cross-platform stuff, I have a PC for that, and for the kind of gaming I enjoy most. But I’ll be getting both consoles eventually, same as I have with the 360 & PS3, so that I can play the good exclusives each will have.

I’ll get the PS4 first, mostly because it’s being released first, but also because the timing is convenient – I get my 13th cheque the month after it’s released – but chances are I’ll also get the XBox One the next time I get a few grand extra in. Or give in to my extremely poor impulse control, we’ll see :p
