According to an Amazon Poll the Xbox One is dead

Even at the best of times a poll isn’t the best way to really judge public opinion. I mean if we believe polls entirely we’d really believe that most of America wanted Bush as their president and that Mugabe is a rightful leader… but it gets worse.

Once you move into online polls though things start getting even worse so take this with a truck load of salt but Amazon has been running a poll on their videogame Facebook page and the results make for some terrifying viewing for the guys up in Redmond.

At the time of writing here are the current results

AmazonXboxvsPs4

Yes that’s 25 766 to PlayStation 4 compared to 1 452 to Xbox One… I’m too lazy to figure out a percentage there but it goes without saying that Sony is killing it with the online vote at the moment.

it’s changing by the minute but from the time I’ve been refreshing the trend is very much that the PS4 is growing it’s lead… you can watch the slaughter here and feel free to keep us updated in the comments.

Sony is wining with good business sense. The one basic rule in selling is to ask ” Let us ask the customer what he wants.” Microsoft has a slightly different approach and they ask “What do we think the customer wants considering the customer is like us with loads of money and a stable 100meg fiber line at home?”

I think that poll at least 10% accurate for gamers regularly using Amazon services and that there will be some uptake of the console in the US for the TV TV TV fuctionality that is not reflected in the poll results.

However as we have seen with the PS3 if a console doesn’t take the majority of its “home market” and close to 50% of the other markets, specifically EU market coupled with similar sales in games and services it is a business failure.

You know I really want to say “stuff Xbox I’m going PS4”, but it just doesn’t work out. (From the perspective of someone is Aus)

DRM for me is a non issue. I have decent connection, my Xbox is always connected, i do already use it a lot for TV and I only really buy digital downloads anyway. After conversion it’s only $50 more expensive. Online play is now paid for on both, so that’s a wash. Xbox is probably out here 6 months earlier too.

This is the bit I was going to jump and and go, “and Sony’s going to have better games” but they’re not. It feels kind of weird, Xbox is usually the aenemic one, but I look at the exclusives and for me it’s just Knack and a handful of indy titles (which will probably be ported anyway). On the X1 we have Project Spark, Quantum break, Sunset Overdrive.and a few(er) indy titles.

The only thing Sony is winning at for me is PS3 compatibility through Gaikai, and the potential of it’s better hardware, Xbox’s “cloud” powered thing is not unique.

$600 vs $550 is still a lot of money. Maybe i’ll just buy an Ouya instead and wait them out,

Clearly you have thought this through, your points are concise. There are a few hidden factors you should consider. A thorough lack of indie presence, for one, a lot of F2P and MMO support on the PS4. Another, PS4 has a number of studios who have yet to announce new titles, they were obviously not ready for preview. You can be sure that Sony’s titles will amaze in the next year once all of their studios have adapted to PS4 development. Half are still supporting the PS3. I do agree that the PS4 had a disappointing showing of exclusives, >>for a Sony console<<.
Finally, there are the issues of how Microsoft does business. Advertisements, privacy concerns, a complete lack of interest in the opinion of their users etc.
If it's a matter of converting your Xbox 360 library over to PS4, PS+ will have you surpassing your 360 game collection in a few months of subscription. I'm not even exaggerating. If it's a matter of losing your gamerscore… well, then, God help you, you're beyond reason. j/k

But if the polls capture the harsh reality of next-gen pre-ordering, then Microsoft need to drop the attitude, get on their hands and knees, and beg the gaming masses for forgiveness – or drop the DRM crap all together. Actually the latter would do it for me. I still won’t buy a bone day one, but at least then I won’t feel filthy if I get one a while later.

Polls are a terrible beast, really. Like all stats, you need to review where they came from, get stats on the background and so forth of the persons involved and what motivates each of them. Then you set up categories and define which categories tend to vote which way, then you find a plausible reason for that and then realise you are so far off the deep end, the shore is missing, the lifeline is gone and you are just left to tread and hope no one notices

The promise of a thing, the anticipation, the build up, makes the reality far worse than it would have been with little to no expectation.

Read Dune (Frank Herbert) and see how a sisterhood tailors punishment along those principles when one of their order errs. Scary stuff, actually. When the person thinks the punishment is over, when the relief starts to set in, then they unleash the real punishment, for maximum effect.

I was personally very disappointed in E3.

I hoped for a storybook type “big reveal” from MS, that would turn the gaming world on its head. I sort of like stories like that. It speaks to the child me, sort of a Hercule Poirot type ending, MS gets all the people in the drawing room and explains it was the butler, with the candlestick, because, as it turns out, the butler is actually the heir to the throne and he was protecting his identity, secrets and plans till now. And then hand out sweets all round.

            I will look at that.

My inner child grew up on Greek, Roman and Norse Mythology and how it applies to understanding people today, so my views are perhaps a bit different. My gran read to me from a young age, say 3. Awesome stuff, but I never really played with the other kids like that. Very serious I was.

Then perhaps your view of ‘the mentality of a five year old’ is somewhat different to mine 😛

What are you anticipating then? Beyond: Two Souls? MGSV? Ryse?

          • Brady miaau

            June 14, 2013 at 11:01

Some nice big, RPG’s. Like Skyrim or Fallout, I tend to be making up my own story as I play through. Now that is awesome!

Ryse looks completely an utterly awesome.

Dragon Age 1 was like wow, in terms of the stories I told in my head while I was playing. That was amazing, the game allowed me so much freedom it was awesome. Perhaps I am over sharing!

My five year old mentality comes in more in how I anticipate and expect things to happen. I get angry if they did happen according to my own weird plan, which may make sense or not.

What are you looking out for, beyond the golden toblerones? A 3d printer, with ingredient mixer, sounds pretty good to me right now!

          • Argentil

            June 14, 2013 at 12:39

In terms of setting and graphical prowess, Ryse looks stunning. I am concerned it lacks substance though.
I’m looking forward to MGSV, and FFXV, the Division and Destiny. Kinda tired of shooters actually, but what can you do?
Dragon Age: Origins was excellent. Stellar game. DA 2 was so disappointing, and I’m not sure Inquisition will be much better. One of EA’s people said that they were aiming for somewhere in the middle of DA:O and DA2 for Inquisition.

Not a big surprise so far. Couple of other polls have indicated the same trend. But at the end of the day if budget allows it, many current Xbox owners will most likely buy Xbox One. No point in throwing away all those years of achievements, purchases, exclusive games etc. by not continuing.

I think what these polls are indicating at the moment is the disappointment and fustration people have with Microsoft. But there are a lot of months still to go so when the dust has settled things will be different. By how much different we will have to wait and see.

I’m a Playstation man so will continue with the PS4. If MS sorts out it’s problems with the Xbox One I might be tempted to buy it as my second console. Otherwise it’s PC and PS4 all the way.
