Next week Friday, those of you who aren’t preparing to die will be getting ready for Titanfall. The mech-battling, wall-running, jet-packing shooter from Respawn is out on Friday for those of who don’t live in North America, promising to not just be Call of Duty with mechs. Which is what it looks a heck of a lot like.
I have to say, I thoroughly enjoyed my limited time with the beta – though it could be because everyone playing sucked at the game as much as I did. I know I used to enjoy the heck out of Call of Duty’s multiplayer until everybody on earth’s skill eclipsed mine, making that skill gulf unbearable.
My biggest issue with the game though, is that with its multiplayer focus and lack of single player, Respawn doesn’t seem to focus much on the obvious lore that surrounds Titanfall. This new launch trailer gives me hope, showing some of what the the game’s developers call “campaign multiplayer,” which injects some sort of narrative in to some of the game’s modes.
According to Respawn’s Vince Zampella, there’ll be a “couple of hours” of multiplayer story to be had, told from both sides of the war. Here’s the launch trailer, showing a little bit of narrative from its campaign. It means I’ll at least get a few hours of enjoyment out of Titanfall, as I tend to tired of shooters pretty quickly.

I couldn’t care less about it – but only because it’s not the type of game I enjoy. Hope it does well though, because they’ve taken a big gamble.

same. Gamers age very quickly. Just have to sit in the corner and deal with it while our medium looses all atmosphere and immersion.
We just have to be thankful that games like Shadow of the Colossus were made at all.
If it was 7 years later Shadow of the Colossus would have been multi player.

Shadow of the Colossus is close to the perfect game. Was Simple but complex, beautiful and challenged and made you feel like a kid again..

Yeah, because it is clientside prediction. It is okay for those lagging. But for those with nice pings they will run behind cover and then die from nowhere. And when you have two guys with 200 and 350ms pings it just gets much worse. It will still be fun, no doubt about it, but it will become frustrating for those with such ping differences.
I was more interested in the competitive side of it. Anything above 60ms completely destroys any possibility of a competitive game. At least for us purist still jamming on CRT’s and 400 DPI MS mice 🙂

“campaign multiplayer”, something else for COD and BF to look into. Why even bother with SP. Then again why do any of the companies still bother with SP? There’s no money to be made. Your client plays the game an resells the hard copy. Even GTA had MP with microtransactions even though it was buggy as hell and people hacked the system to pieces.
The real money lies in season passes. You sell half a game and charge people for the rest later. Also if you’ve been in the game as long as BF you can recycle maps from previous titles and still charge extra. You can even release a broken game and still patch it four months later. Doesn’t matter if people hate you for it and troll you on the internet. There’s money to be counted.
