Titanfall confirmed to only be 6 vs 6

I see 8

Titanfall was my most anticipated title of 2014. I had some solid hands on time with the shooter from Respawn studios at Gamescom last year and I have to admit the game was incredibly addictive.

To me it felt like the good old days with Quake, Unreal Tournament and the first Modern Warfare. In short it was the ground-breaking shooter experience we’d been waiting for over the last 5 years. In fact right up until this morning it was still my pick of the titles for 2014 and yet now I need to rethink that after a tweet by Respawn boss, Vince Zampella.

Yes that’s confirmation that Titanfall will only be a 6v6 experience which is quite a shock for a game that is apparently attempting to be the leading next-gen shooter experience.

Now when I played the title in Germany we only had 5v5 and it was a great experience but we have been watching trailers recently where I can count at least 8 players with a player marker above their head and as such I was expecting a much larger game than what we are now being promised.

Take a look for yourself in the trailer above released at E3, the 8 players can be clearly seen at the 1:05 mark.

Granted at first I thought maybe that’s the single player campaign until I remembered that there is no single player experience in Titanfall. Respawn has admitted that it can put more players into the game, however according to Vince it just plays the best at 6v6.

I still expect the game to be good but I’m definitely more hesitant to call it a possible Game of the Year now. Titanfall is also an Xbox console exclusive which is another blow to Microsoft’s attempts to catch up with Sony.

It’s even funnier when you realise that a free-to-play game like Blacklight Retribution can support MORE than 12 players, and is more features-rich than most triple AAA MP FPS titles.

Okay so it won’t appeal for the public masses. But if 6v6 is the most balanced I don’t see why it is now a ‘lesser game’. UT and Quake 2v2 TDM is good, 4v4 is crowded. With a faced paced game like Titanfall I suspect 6v6 is going to feel crowded.

And for once I am excited that a developer has the guts to limit it for a more balanced and involved experience.

Well, their goal is to make a multiplayer game that /feels/ and plays more like a single player game – so having AI makes sense if they’re not setting out to create a pure MP shooter.

Screw that, I hope it becomes another purist game like Quake and UT. 🙂
That is what I’ve been waiting for, not some dumbed down, slow, 32v32+, 30fps, hitscan, spray and pray, press button to sprint shooter that seems to be the standard today.

With everyone else too afraid to make another purist game I applaud them for going that direction. Even then Titanfall is still a compromise compared to the glory days of QW, Q3 and UT. But I have always had some hope because of their focus on 120fps above all combined complex movement and balancing that we will see another purist game!

Hope we can remove the AI though.

So you can always play BF4 if you want 16v16. They have tanks and choppers instead of robots.

To me it sounds like the 6v6 is being spun as “best Balance” when in fact it’s a hardware limitation, probably to keep it working on Xbox 360 and Xbone combined.

In the end, if you are talking about “Balance” then you are looking at the map size alone, so either the maps are all really small or they restricted the players due to hardware limitations.

After playing BF4, you get spoilt for those 64v64 battles, it makes for a very different experience to the faster smaller maps. Smaller the map the more frantic the action, maybe that was also taken into account.

For me I was expecting massive epic mech battles in vast open terrain, now it sounds like it will be a bit cramped…

Titanfall was never mechwarrior. May have mechs but have a small area to play with them.. They honestly should of scrapped it on 360 and go all out to show off Next Gen, I mean make the people NEED to buy it!

Agreed, even official Quakelive Clan Arena comps limit the teams to 3v3 which is often also too hectic. Still wanna give this game a chance after seeing how they implemented advanced player movement and those mechs are just sick imo.

Best balance with AI? Is it going to be 6v6 players while including NPCs too? That wouldn’t be too bad, just plain 6v6 players sounds a bit dull though for the way this title has been hyped.

I think its just something different. it seems like the trend now days is to just cram as many players into a map as possible and just have a song of guns and metal. its often too chaotic and too cluttered taking away from perhaps a more strategic style. i think this is going to work well, rather than have 40 massive robots raining bullets unskillfully in every possible direction. just give it a chance.

To be honest I don’t care to play games with 32 people. I like the personal feel of hunting one person and killing them. Having 32 bouncing people who drop like flies every second bores the shit out of me. If it looks great, then to me 6v6 is fine.

16 a side would actually be the perfect amount for this game.
four four man squads roaming a decent sized map, with the mechs and stuff, it looked like actually using strategy in a regular game was doable.

probably something to do with map size affecting performance.
6v6 should technically be enough if the maps are the right size, but the scale of the game is what impressed me.
i liked the idea of having only a few of those big droppy mech things, with dozens of regular ground soldiers to back them up or make multiple squads with.
it looked like battlefield 2142 done right.

I play on the EU server (Cobalt) and the latency is barely noticeable (unless its a big 100v100 fight)

The latency is terrible and the game is as stale as old bread. It’s a grind to get anything decent. But give it a try.

Well, before we go all out on the attack front, lets have a look at the gamers this is aimed at. Considering the whole SP side of things have dropped off, Im pretty certain this is due to the balancing etc for competitive play. Dependant on map size, I think its a really good idea.

Its much easier getting 5 friends together for a few matches than just dropping in with a random lot of 32 people. To me it seems that the pro/comp side of the game are being focused on. Then again, this wouldnt be the first time Ive been wrong this year (weeps quietly in the corner)

Indeed sir. Judging by the comments it’s no surprise that we get endless COD and BF games. Seems that’s what everyone actually wants. Now they want it too with Titanfall because fancy new mechs, but it only supports 6v6.

Maybe EA should do a mech DLC for BF4 so they will be happy.

This game is going to be such a huge disappointment for all of those who are blinded by the hype train.

Multiplayer 6v6 with AI? Why on earth are there AI in a multiplayer game?

6vs6 stinks of peer to peer and no local servers…

HAHAHAAHAHAHAAHAHA! Oh EA, never change! I guess Titanfall will also be riddled with stupid microtransaction dlc.

I’m going to play devil’s advocate for a bit – the number of players matter less than the quality of the maps. 6 v 6 could actually be perfect if the maps are balanced around that number.

I’m sure 6 v 6 is good fun, but I’m also sure they could have made it equally fun with large maps and with more players. I’m wondering how much of this comes down to this being Respawn’s first game.. maybe they just don’t have the experience to take on a larger scope at this stage.

Battlefield 2142 had mechs and it had 32 or 64 player modes.. was a fantastic underrated game. Titanfall may still be good but the lack of pure SP is going to hurt it badly I feel.

You had fun with the game and it’s sliding of your radar because it’s only 6v6?

    Why do I come here?

Thank god places like Eurogamer and Polygon actually have people with brains.

Games like COD and Halo are at their best with 4v4 or 5v5. Gears did fine with it, Nobody complained that The Last of Us had a low player count. You said the game was fun, but suddenly it’s not fun because it’s not 4,000 players all at once?

And if you’d pay attention at all, you’d have read that they tested the game with higher player counts but settled on 6v6. DICE did the same with BF3 and 4 with more players, they stayed with 64. When you design a game, you take what the game is about and then you make the maps about that. Titanfall impressed you with 8 players, why is six so bad?
