Rise of the Tomb Raider details

Rise of the Tomb Raider is out this year, and we haven’t seen or heard a thing about the title since its controversial reveal last year. The Tomb Raider reboot was a stunning game, with some equally stellar gameplay, so you’d expect Crystal Dynamics to stick to the same formula that worked so well the first time. You’d only be half right.

Rise of the Tomb Raider will still feel the same, but Crystal Dynamics is tweaking some of the games smaller mechanics to make them feel natural. Take weapon and item upgrades for example. In Tomb Raider you had to rack up experience and find salvage points to craft new items. That won’t be the same in Rise of the Tomb Raider, with Lara scavenging for specific metals, minerals and animal hides to craft Molotov cocktails, ammo, traps and more.

This will go hand in hand with a lot more actual tomb raiding, which Crystal Dynamics felt was too sparse in their previous attempt. Puzzles are also said to be a little trickier and less straight forward, with players required to decipher a lost language in order to get to the really good treasures.

As for setting, the Rise of the Tomb Raider won’t stick to one locale this time around. You’ll be plunged into the harsh wilderness of Siberia, and at least one other major location which Crystal Dynamics isn’t sharing yet. The games dynamic weather system will also have a far greater effect on gameplay, with line of sight and noise affected by snow storms and blinding fog. Lara will also be able to use this to her advantage, as well as hid in bushes, climb trees and swim in order to approach combat situations more quietly.

And while Tomb Raider was a origins story for the famed explorer, this sequel will be more about Lara trying to prove that she’s not crazy. Not many people believe her tale of going toe to toe with an immortal being, so in order for her to say “I told you so” she’s out hunting for a fabled invisible city built by the Grand Prince of Vladimir in the 13th century. Jonah Maiava, the faithful cook from the previous title, will join her expedition as well. Almost like a Nathan Drake/ Sully partnership.

And if you were hoping for any news on additional platforms, you’re out of luck. Rise of the Tomb Raider is still a timed exclusive for Xbox One and Xbox 360, and we’re likely not going to hear anything further on the matter until the game actually releases. I’m just hoping we get to see the game in action soon.

You should be able to play this on PC, might even be a simultaneous release? Just like I’d be able to play SF V on PC (or stream it to my Xbox!????). It will never come to PS4 however, but you have Dude Raider and Spelunker…..

“Timed Exclusive”. Microsoft doesn’t own the IP. It will release on all other platforms later.

At least SF5 is launching on PC as well. Unlike this. I sometimes question the health of AAA games. Why even bother when everything launches broken with season passes. They might as well just stop and release simpler games with microtransactions.

Timed exclusive could be up to 5 years. It took Mass Effect 5 long years before it was released on the Playstation. After ME 3 had already been released.

The Tomb Raider franchise has always ended up shooting itself in the foot.

ALSO ITS THE FCKING 20TH ANNIVERSARY. The fans who installed Tress FX or who even Cosplay Lara Croft and do not want to invest in a Bone are livid.

They gambled. They thought the Bone was going to be a massive success 15months ago when the Bone and PS4 were sitting on 2million consoles sold on PAR.

Now its 3 to 1 to the PS4 at 18million consoles sold NOT SHIPPED.

They should have bet on the PONY.

But still, the practice is greedy.

Microsoft lost the plot in 2010 when all budget got redirected towards Kinect.

Alan Wake was the last game released by what was a game centric company after a wonderful 5 years of of SHIT HOT games for my 360. I CANT BELIEVE that Microsoft Studios is no more 🙁

            February 4, 2015 at 10:35

Yeah, still don’t get the point of the Kinect – I mean, why?! Even a Fable game (I’ve always enjoyed the Fable games, to be honest – not the best around, but still fun to play) wasn’t enough to get me to buy it… Just don’t see the point.

With regards to Remedy, I can’t wait for them to release their new game – “Quantum Break”. It’s one of the main reasons I bought an XB1 too (that and Forza!!)… It has a definite original Max Payne / Alan Wake vibe to it… And that is a very good thing indeed!

          • oVg elfroot slayer

            February 4, 2015 at 10:39

ALAN WAKE still sits proud in my ELITE 10 game XBOX360 game collection. All else got traded in.

If The Last of Us, Quantum Break, an off-line Bone with an off-line FORZA 5 was released with the console then I would have spent my game saving on a Bone.

As it stands Microsoft lost allot of potential consumers thanks to running around like a headless chicken for 8 months.

DAMMMMM That Bone release still leaves a sour taste in my mouth. Im am still trying to figure out how one can fcuk up so bad.

Bwahahahaha, I suppose Crystal Dynamics are kind enough not to allow the PS4 and PC owners to do 2 years worth of free BETA testing on the Bone before the remastered reboot is released.

But we all know it comes downs to brass tax. If the game does not make profit on the Bone like it barley made when it went multi platform then I do not expect it to come to the PS4.

Considering that the game takes place 3 years after Double Agent does qualify it as a sequel. Also, a 85% metacritic hardly makes the game a disaster.

I wonder if people would have had the same reaction if Tomb Raider was announced as a PS4 timed exclusive. It was a dick move, yes but at least there are a crap load of other awesome titles coming out this year which will keep people busy long enough until they bring it out to other platforms.

Still wish all games would be made for all platforms, that or merge all these console companies into one and make one badass console :-p

It would be the same reaction from the PC owners. The hardcore fans with the new Tress FX chip installed just to look at her lovely locks flowing in the wind.

It just seems like a dumb move after the upset Square suits were moaning about 5.5 million copies sold not making profit.

The only way to green light something like this for one console is if all the assets from the first game are reused. The production value would be halved, so why not still score off the other platforms?

The entire deal makes no sense.
