Sony Online Entertainment is planning on releasing their next two big titles onto the Xbox Platform and are expecting at least a 50% bump in profits with the move. But it’s not as insane as you think.
Sony Online Entertainment was recently bought out from under Sony by Columbus Nova, a private equity firm, and renamed Daybreak Game Co. The move has now allowed the previously first party studio to spread its wings and look towards the other consoles as an option to expand. And with two large games in development, the cult favourite H1Z1 and EverQuest Next, the future is looking bright for a once major player in the industry who has since fallen on harder times.
The first thing that happened when they split from Sony was to fire 140 people in an effort to trim costs and return the company to profitability. They aren’t yet saying if they’ve hit that mark yet but they do seem positive about the future.
“If you just take the numbers that the console publishers themselves have put out, you are talking about a 50 percent revenue lift,(publishing on Xbox One)” said Smedley. “It could be very significant.”
Now I’m not sure how he sees this happening when the market for MMORPG games is heavily skewed in the favour of the PC and the PS4 is already outselling the Xbox One. I’d guess that the increase in revenue would be around the 20% mark by opening up to this last platform of choice.
Either way though the pedigree of SOE, now Daybreak Games, is fantastic and if the Xbox market can start receiving games like EverQuest, PlanetSide 2 and H1Z1 then all the better for consumers in general.
Hey you never know, maybe The Agency will finally be released

I tend to stay away from the 96+ battles, unless I’m doing a quick strafe with the Reaver

lol. That’s such MBA-level thinking. “If we release on two platforms instead of one, we’ll double our sales.” Ag voeitog.
