Red Dead Redemption sequel rumours ride again

I hate wholly unsourced, frankly implausible rumours, but I’m a rather big fan of Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption, so I’ll let it slide. I don’t know what it is about Rockstar’s criminal cowboy simulator, but I favoured it over the GTA of the day – possibly because it allowed for pure, fantasy escapism. I’ve been a foreigner, lost in a big city – but never a turn-of-the-century cowboy. Rumours about a Red Dead sequel pop up all the time, and they’re invariably the stuff of fanboy fantasy twaddle. This new rumour isn’t any different.

According to a random person on the internet, posting to Reddit, there’s a new Red Dead Redemption coming. It’s to be shown at E3, and have an unbearably uncreative subtitle. IT’s called Red Dead Redemption 2: Legends of the West, a title that’s only slightly less improbable than Darryn getting a date. According to the poster, who claims to be an ex Rockstar sound engineer who’s leaking this stuff because his boss is a dick, the game will be a prequel, focused on Irish and Seth. It’ll feature a third, player-created character. Here’s what the post says.

“The two “main” characters are Irish and Seth. Irish will be brought up in Ireland and will move to the Americas when he is fifteen and moves to the game setting when he turns twenty one. Seth is from Kansas City and works as a teller in a bank. He then hears of a treasure and uses his life savings to bring his family to Texas in the town of Tumbleweed. Throughout the story we experience him unraveling to his state of mind in the original game, losing his wife, children, home, and possessions to his treasure.

The third person is a character you create similar to multiplayer in GTA V. You choose his clothes and horse. Although you can unlock outfits for Seth and Irish, the third person (Who you name) can acquire all different kinds of Western tops, bottoms, boots, gloves, and hats.

Horses will also bring completely new customization to the game. You can choose there type/breed like the last game, but now you can also choose what saddle they have (with their own boosts and stats), storage, and paint.

You can also buy your own safe house and customize it.

Also, all of this carries over into multiplayer.

There will be many new and more thought out stranger missions as well as roughly thirty campaign missions for both Seth and Irish. The third character can be involved in the campaign, but can not be used in missions. He will appear as a “gun for hire” and works with Seth and Irish, tying the stories together.

“You” (the third character) will be in free roam, but Irish and Seth can be called in as companions (but not be played as), as well as other people. You will meet many of the characters from the original game including young Bonny Macfarlane, Sherriff, and even John Marston, but he will still be in his gang.

A big new part of the RDR prequel is the new gang system. You can join several different gangs, or if you think you are up for it you can join the law enforcement of certain towns, but this will restrict you on things you can do like robbing. Although you can rob it might cost you your hard earned career and possibly your life. You can also bring in a posse (up to 4-8 friends) to single player, technically co op now. You can take on certain side missions and a few campaign missions with your posse.”

And I don’t buy it. Not at all. For one, the poster calls this prequel the second game in the series, forgetting of course that Red Dead Revolver doesn’t exist. Plus, the rest of it just sounds wholly uninteresting; the same setting and the same characters. According to the poster, a PC version of the game will also be coming a month after the console versions. A month? This is totally fake.

This maybe fake, but I have no doubts that Rockstar is working on a sequel of sorts. Should it happen, what would you like to see in a sequel to Red Dead Redemption. Other than the obvious PC version, of course.

But The Warriors is a game based on the film with the same title.
How can it have a sequel, @hammersteyn:disqus? :O

I dunno, they made a Scarface game back in the day that started where Tony Montana dies, only he survives and the game is then about you having to win his empire back. Also Alien Isolation and Shadow of Mordor did not have a movie either.

I’d say why not all of them! Though for me it’s RDR then Bully (which I really loved but RDR is my fav all-time game). Not played Warriors either but saw a friend play it on PS2 and it didn’t really appeal for some reason. Would check it out if I get the chance though.

The combat was awesome in Warriors you could throw bricks at people and use pipes and planks to beat them up. So much fun.

Never could get into Grand Theft Horsie. Seriously, I fell asleep whilst attempting to play it. I guess it was just one of those games I could not like, not due to lack of trying from my side though.

You get those – I am like that in Darksiders 2. I have picked up and started playing so many times only to get bored 30 minutes later!

Does it need a sequel? I would like to just remember it for what it was, not see some weak ass tie in game, that spoils the heritage for me.

Eeeeehhhh, I really wouldn’t mind if they did a “current-gen” reboot/remaster of RDR. It was a great game that I thoroughly enjoyed, and I would quite enjoy playing it again, or a new interpretation of it, on new tech.

Red Dead Redemption is one of my favorite games of all time. The story and the additional content Undead Nightmare had incredible story lines and game play. I would love to see a sequel following an older Jack Marston.

I’d LOVE a new RDR. In fact, it’s on my ‘must play again soon’ list (right up there with the Bioshock series which I just completed, all 3 of them, and am now starting the Arkham series… And loving every minute of these awesome games!). But I’m with you on this Geoff – that sounds like quite a load of twaddle… If that were the game announced, I’d fully expect it to be developed by someone within the 2K banner, but not Rockstar themselves – sounds like a ‘cash grab’ idea more than a proper sequel.
