PlayStation 4 continues sales dominance

October’s NPD figures, which track US sales of games and related hardware are out – and they show that Sony’s console has been the best selling gaming hardware in the US for ten consecutive months. both consoles though, are selling like hotcakes. It’s a pity people aren’t buying games.

At least, not physical ones from retail stores – which is all the NPD really tracks.

The NPD says that North American Consumers spent $790.7 million on new games, hardware, and accessories in the month of  October, according to a new report from industry-intelligence firm The NPD Group. that’s rather similar to the number in October 2013.

“Overall sales across hardware, new physical software, and accessories were essentially flat in October 2014 compared to October 2013,” NPD’s Liam Callahan said. “Hardware and accessory growth, at 59 percent and 22 percent, respectively, was enough to offset the decline in new physical software of 28 percent.”

US gamers spent $273.6 million on new consoles in October, primarily on PlayStation 4s and Xbox Ones. Just $350 million of that was spent on games, down from the $482.6 million in 2013. Two reasons for that; GTA V was released in October last year, and this generation, many more people are opting for digital purchases, which the NPD doesn’t track.

Sony’s pretty happy that it’s console is still “winning,” though that may change for November, thanks to the $50 price cut on the Xbox One.

These were the top selling games in the month.

1) NBA 2K15 (PS4, XB1, 360, PS3, PC)
2) Super Smash Bros. (3DS)
3) The Evil Within (PS4, XB1, PS3, 360, PC)
4) Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel (360, PS3, PC)
5) Destiny (360, XB1, PS4, PS3)
6) Skylanders Trap Team (360, Wii, WiiU, PS3, XB1, PS4, 3DS)
7) FIFA 15 (PS4, 360, PS3, XB1, Wii, Vita, 3DS)
8) Madden NFL 15 (360, PS4, PS3, XB1)
9) Middle Earth: Shadow Of Mordor (PS4, XB1, PC)
10) Minecraft (360, PS3, PS4)

The obvious missing games here are sunset Overdrive, and Bayonetta 2. Discounting collated SKUs (ie: counting each platform of a game separately), the game would have been ninth, despite only being on sale for four days in October. The lack of Bayonetta 2 on the charts is a bit depressing though.

I’m not a fanboy of either consoles, i have consoles from almost all-both generations but Playstation has been the better choice due to the games they have exclusively (FF cough). Haven’t bought xbone or PS4 due to not seeing any exclusives to my liking so hopefully down the path i’ll be able to make a choice.

Anyway people saw PS4 having the 1080p aspect better than xbone so more people are buying they PS4 mostly due to that.

That and this 22 second video, which basically forced the XBOX One to do a 180 on almost all of the plans they had for their new console.

The turning point started when the word MANDATORY was used back in November 2012 when rumors of a MANDATORY Kinect 2 was being bundled.

Then a little after that the phrase DEAL WITH IT was used by that loon over 24hour DRM

Then a little after that SECOND HAND games are banned

Then the FCKING reveal that everybody stayed up late to watch in Feb 2013 only to be bored to death by TV TV TV TV TV TV TV SPORTS SPORTS SPORTS SPORTS WATERCOOLERS AND STUPID COD DOG.

Then the CEO FCUKED off to ZYNGA

Then Major Mandela too over and the 180 started. They are still making up lost ground. They started $100 more expensive than the PS4. Then they dropped the Kinect which no one wants anyways and it cost the same as the PS4. But it still didn’t selling well forcing them to sell it for $50 cheaper than the PS4. Not even out a year and it’s already $150 cheaper.

I tell you, I have no Idea how Microsoft stay afloat with all those headless chickens running around. NO DIRECTION or clear mandate.

But at least they are clever in the fact that they know gamers FORGET very quickly.

You can re-brand your work model every year and the boiled frogs I call gamers will never even know.

Hopefully it’ll drop another $50-100 in the next 6 months. I’ll only consider getting one if it’s priced under R3500 in South Africa (and even then I’ll be a little apprehensive).

In the times we live in now, a game has to be finished in about 4 hours so that we can go out and buy another game before the day is up.

Theme Hospital is a timeless classic. Just look at what they did to Simcity 5. I can never play that game ever again. I don’t want to play that game ever again. And that comes from Simcity 4 another timeless classic that I still play every year.

And I think there are still lots of Theme Hospital fans waiting for an HD version to release. So if they make another Theme Hospital and don’t fuck it up, it should still sell well.

Then those consoles from the last 30 years will get revived while SIM CITY discs and the like are used as place mats.
