Microsoft dominated Black Friday, say analysts

In the US, Black Friday is easily the most important single sales day for platform holders. With insane specials, consumers rush to stores (or shop online like smart people) and pick up games and consoles for cheap, ready to sit under Christmas trees for nearly a month. It’s usually a pretty good indicator of which platform holder “wins” the important holiday period in the US. According to analysts, it was very likely the Xbox One that was this year’s Black Friday champion.

topconsole_share

According to analysts firm Infoscout, Microsoft’s console accounted for 53% of all console purchases during Black Friday sales at retailers. Of course, one of the primary reasons for that is that the console is significantly cheaper than the competition, coming in at $70 less for most Black Friday bundles. Combined with the Xbox 360, Microsoft platforms accounted for 62% of consoles purchased. The PS4 had a pretty good weekend as well, accounting for  31% of the consoles sold – exactly half the Xbox platform. The poor Wii U came up at just 6% of market share over the Black Friday weekend. 92% of those Wii Us were purchased by parents as gifts for their children.

topconsole_kids-1

InfoScout collected this data from 180,000 mostly willing participants who were incentivized to send in pictures of their receipts with their phones from retailers such as Target, Walmart, Best Buy, RadioShack, GameStop, and others. It’s a pretty decent sample, I’d imagine. What does this mean to you? Very likely nothing, but more console sales means even more support for all of the new systems. Except mayhaps the Wii U.

Well no real surprise there. Fewer Xbox One owners compared to PS4 so more people would buy that and I did see better local deals for the Xbox. One of the deals had the Xbox One at R4999.

Had some good time with my WiiU this weekend. Played off-screen in bed. Was lovely. Lit some scented candles, slipped into something comfortable and proceeded to what I can only describe as…magical…

Black Friday is about price deals. The cheaper products will fly off the selves. But this just goes to show that Microsoft needs to give the Xbox One away for free to get people to show interest.

I bought some games off Xbox Live for the Xbox One, at a really, really good price. It was great.

BUT I struggled to find a good deal for Kinect Xbox One, even if I buy and get the Kinect later. So I just bought the nearest Kinect Xbox One I could find. Was a bit disappointed at that. Not as disappointed, obviously, as the wife will be when she finds out it was her January salary top up I spent.

My wife got some awesome deals on nappies and stuff, from murica. I vetoed any Electronics from there, as customs may do strange things. We buy a lot of stuff from China and are well aware that SA Customs charges almost random amounts on the same goods at different times.

True Hipster, my friend, true Hipster. Hi tech cloth nappies all the way. Re-usable in all we do. Not me, my wife. So far I seem to on her re-usable list, but I do wonder about that sometimes.

Stuff is baby stuff, of course.

Also, some Fischer price baby toys cost R120 including customs (if we get lucky) but in Baby City is R499.

Re seat, actually I spent a bit of time yesterday taking the car seat apart, cause little bundle of, um, joy, spread the joy around in the car seat using a rapid expulsion method, through the mouth.

        So close one, really close.

Then I spent the rest of Sunday waiting for the wife and baby to go to bed, so I could play Dragon Age:Inquisition on my shiny new Xbox One, bought for the family of course!

Makes sense. XBox released later in most regions and had a rocky start. Now as things are shaping up for XBoxOne and it’s a bit more stable it’s not surprising everyone who didn’t want to be early adopters are now jumping on board.

Anyway, neither here nor there. All those people who said they bought the Wii-U for their kids? They are liars! They bought it under the pretense that it’s for the kids. They really want it for themselves!

its the same as the steam summer sale, people know black friday is coming, so they hold off on their bigger buys for then.
in the US, black friday is mad, they cant just go browsing and hold out for the best deal, you have to know what you want and be prepared to get it befor its sold out.

PS4 guys are much the same as how we used to see apple users, soon as something new comes out, many either insta buy it or we dont buy it at all.

ps4 had the earlier release date and totes dominated the market, while the xbox guys have been happy to wait and see how the console war pans out befor either defecting to ps4 or remaining loyal to the cult of xbox.
with the console exclusive game edge over PS4, the xbox is building itself back up.

i very nearly bought that R5500 deal for the white xbone with sunset overdrive on takealot, it was alot of work convincing myself i didnt really NEED it and that R5500 was alot of money to waste on forza.

still hate myself for that, that white xbone would have looked awesome next to my white master race case.

you just needed to add why xbox is suddenly doing better and yours would be better than mine, i use too many words to explain things that sound simple in my head.

i still think the ps4 is the better console, but i have a pc, if i eliminate the games that Id play on my PC from the potential buy list for PS4 games, id be left with a very short list.
while the xbox would still have forza.
