Xbox Ultimate – Coming soon? Getting There

Stuff.tv has posted today about the new Xbox Ultimate that they are predicting (or confirming) will be released in August 2008.

The ultimate comes with the following specs

  • Xbox 360 Ultimate 1080p HDMI output
  • Built in Wi-Fi
  • hi-def audio output
  • 65nm hardware
  • a silent fan
  • HD-DVD drive built in
  • 320GB hard drive to use with the IPTV service

Now there has been quite a lot of buzz around the Internet about this and I have to say I don’t know why. The biggest problem the PS3 had in the beginning was that it tried to create its own box that did everything.

I don’t want a HD-DVD drive when Blu-Ray may win, I don’t need 320GB when we don’t have live, the new premiums are quiet enough but the Wi-Fi would be nice.

Now if they release this for the same price as the current Elite then great, else I hope it isn’t true.

    Do you think they will do a tradein offer? At the end of the day the XBOX is going to land up costing twice as much as a PS3. IMO, pity microsoft didn’t rush the first consoles and release something complete so we would not need to keep replacing our consoles with new ones :(

    Not only likely, but inevitable. Not necessarily for CES 08 but this product will come out some time.

    Microsoft have to, it’s as simple as that. It’s all very well competing on price but as prices drop they converge, look at the drubbing the Elite took since the 40Gb PS3 was announced. The Ultimate might not be the same price as the Elite, but it’ll be about the same price as the 80Gb PS3.

    I reckon MS will also announce price cuts across the range at CES as well or we might well see the pro and elite merged into a single SKU. (White 120Gb) at the current Pro price, the arcade will get a little cut, say to $250.

    More than anything I think they rather need to cut the price of the accessories. Specifically the 120Gb HDD and the WiFi adapter.

    It makes sense if they do this. As long as
    1) like you said, priced like the Elite.
    2) games will NEVER come out on HD-DVD. Not even as a option. (like HD_DVD and DVD versions sold seperately)
    3) They sell us the hard drive for a reasonable price (R1000 for a 2.5″ 320GB is worth it) … this all depends on how Telkom does for it’s IPTV. Also, bring down the price of the 20GB drastically (like R300) so that they can comfortably say “HDD required” on some games.. it WILL be a problem for the 360 soon.

    Arb question, but do you get 360GB hard drives ? Surely it would just sound cooler if they did.

    Bundling an HD-DVD player with the 360 could actually help the format grow and even take a lead in the industry. Considering the amount of Blu-Ray players are quite large due to the fact that the PS3 has one built in.

    The wifi is a welcomed addition. The hard drive sounds nice too, but seems like it’ll increase the price by quite a bit.

    If, however, it is the price of the Elite, it’ll be amazing.

    Nope only s 320 gig HDD, also this will be a bit pricey and probably start having games released on HD.

    Wonder what MS will charge for the 320 GB HD as a standalone ? R4000 ????

    In terms of the HD format how’s about VMD (its basically multiple layer DVD-9 – standard is quad layer but can go as high as eight – and it uses red laser tech).

    If MS could do a firmware update for VMD support that could solve the storage issue with the least amount of hassle

    VMD sounds cool but the xbox drives have trouble reading dual layers, now you expect it to read four layers or even eight :)

    lol… I think Microsoft should consider making the games backup onto the massive HDD’s… there you go, problem solved… and the other folks with no HDD on there xbox’s will have the choice of multi disks, or have to buy a HDD… and since steaming is allowed, people just use the HDD’s on the xbox for gaming, and stream there media…
