No, not Black Ops 2 – that’s coming this year. I mean the next one, from cyclical stalwart developer Infinity Ward (or the remains of it, anyway). Modern Warfare 3’s Lead engineer Andre Aye’s CV listed (past tense, ‘cos the juicy info’s since been removed) an unannounced title – that many are presuming to be the next Call of Duty.
That game, more than likely Modern Warfare 4, will be coming to the Xbox 360, PS3, PC DX11, and “TBA.” TBA, generally, means “put on your speculation caps, folks.”
That speculation, right now, has people believing TBA to either mean Nintendo’s Wii U - or it could be the next generation consoles from Sony and Microsoft. Because COD games release, like clockwork, in November every year, people suspect it might point to new hardware being out before 2013 draws to a close.
More interestingly, it seems COD might be getting a new – or at least significantly overhauled – engine. His CV stated that Aye was “responsible for setting technical direction and design for a new high-end DX11 code base.” Could Call of Duty re-invent itself again – and show up as a launch title for next-gen, much like the really excellent Call of Duty 2 did? It does mean, should it happen, that the current gen consoles – the Xbox 360 and Ps3 – will be left with inferior ports.
