Why is Microsoft hiding Xbox One sales?

Hiding

Microsoft has released its latest quarterly figures, showing that the company’s Xbox is selling rather well and making the company a fair bit of pocket money. That’s good! But there’s a problem. They seem to be shying away from disclosing sales figures of its newest console; obfuscating them as a general Xbox lump sum.

According to figures noted in the Computing and Gaming Hardware sector, which is the fancy new name for the Devices and Consumer Hardware division, Microsoft has seen an increase in revenue of 23% or $275 million for the quarter year-on-year. They’re putting that down to “higher Surface and Xbox Platform revenue.”

The Xbox brand alone has increased by 14%, or $104 million, thanks to the 1.1 million Xbox consoles they shipped in the fourth quarter. Here’s the rub; they don’t break down how many of those were of the legacy Xbox 360, and how many were of the newer Xbox One. They also fail to distinguish between units shipped to retail, and units sold to customers.

It’s the same sort of PR spin nonsense that Sony tried to pull with the PlayStation Vita when it was floundering; they grouped PSP sales and Vita sales together to make it seem that the system was doing better than it was.

Microsoft recently trumpeted the fact that its Xbox One sales have doubled in the last month, which is fantastic news for Xbox fans. The unfortunate reality is that even that was covered in spin; the Kinect-free Xbox One was announced in the middle of month, which would cause consumers who would have otherwise bought the console off of purchasing it until the next month. That undoubtedly negatively impacted May’s Xbox One sales – which would benefit the next month’s sales.

Doubling May’s sales is easy if you take that in to consideration. If you couple that with the fact that The PlayStation 4 still outsold the Xbox One on its home turf despite that console selling twice as much, it’s quite possible that the Xbox One is doing far more poorly than anyone imagined.

Without raw numbers to back up any of their claims, Microsoft is actually doing itself and its consumers a disservice.

I don’t understand why people would wait for the Xbox in South Africa, by the time they get the unit the PlayStation would have been here for almost a year, all the games they are waiting for I already played.

I tend to agree with you, I do use it everyday. Don’t know how it compares to the Xbone controller. My remotes was also replaced after 6 months due to the rubbers on the nobs tearing. There is also the problem with the R1, and L1 keys getting stuck after time, easy to clean but ja should not happen at all

I knew from the moment Microsoft announced full online DRM for the Xbox One, that Microsoft’s console was not going to sell well.

Microsoft has flipped the DRM switch and back peddled and still the Xbox One is not selling well.

America was seen as “Xbox land” and the real battle was for Europe. But now we see that Xbox One is not really for anyone. Well hardcore fans and non fans who just don’t know.

Xbox One is not sold all over the world yet. There’s still the tier 2 countries to come. But if the console is not selling well in America, I doubt the sales in Japan and South Africa will add much to the sales numbers.

Anyway. If One thing is for sure. Don’t support DRM.

Forcing Kinect,DRM and then lying about not being able to simply flip a switch then apparently telling customers they have a choice. The lied to us from day one, maybe that’s why it’s called XBOX One. One being the day their demise started.

The rabidness of people trying to find out what their sells are just show that they shouldn’t be showing because no matter what it will just be used to attack and slander. Fact is they are making money and that is the goal of any company and any product but it seems that making money isn’t enough. The sells don’t change the function or quality of the product. The numbers will be reveled soon enough. Until then shouldn’t we be talking about games coming up and how much we will be enjoying them.

Xbox revenue up 14% to $104 million, but no profit, otherwise they would have said profit. That means they lost money on Xbox this quarter and last quarter.

ms is hiding xbox sales numbers because they aren’t good compared to the competition. No need for fanboy conspiracy theories.

Of course you don’t want anyone talking about sales, even though you’d be screaming about them if the numbers were different.

That you speculating again. Normally if your revenue go up your profits go up as well. I have some banking experience and I will say this…. somethig is truly not making money it gets shutdown…. not bought out or sold. Each item plays a part in the eco system. Look at MS stock it hasnt been fluxuating it has been strong and keeps getting stronger. The Xbox division brings in lots of money in lots of ways how it is accounted for is the tricky thing. You never want to show too much strength or every Tom Dick and Harry will be buying in and you only want that to happen right before you truly spin a division off of do a big restructure.

Regardless of the Doom and Gloom, I am confident that the boner will bounce back in the US through Halo MCC and Black Friday (later this year). As for tier 2, they won’t make a dent, boners are already on the grey market in most of those countries, and demand just isn’t there for the boner.

*Warning: Satire* My Inside Sources told me that “Microsoft is actually not releasing the sales figures for the Xbox One on purpose, so that they don’t contribute to the ongoing console war”

My inside sources think you’re right. New humble Microsoft has grown tired of the childish jibes and schoolyard fights and have decided not to be dragged into all the unnecessary nonsense – well until the numbers improve. 😛

In the meantime they have the “bestest” exclusives, even though half of those games aren’t exclusives at all.

Well the bottom line is that they are actually only responsible to take care of their stockholders. So they are obliged to present the financials in the best light they can, as long as it is within the realms of the law.

My biggest concern is and this goes for Sony as well is that there was talk of the new gen consoles costing more than the selling price and that the company would make an initial loss and as production got better and more efficient the costs would come down and then the companies could rake in the cash. The only problem I have with this is that the components are not new tech but ones that were already in existence and would have already had the benefit of the cost reductions.

Also Microsoft has recently canned a large portion of its phone division. They are discontinuing most of their feature phones and are laying off a significant number on employees, I guarantee Xbox’s are not going to be a hit in Finland. They have already closed down the entertainment division. It looks to me like they are going to try to go back to core and anything not carrying its weight is out.

Xbox one is not the success they imagined. I don’t really believe that they can play with the price to much to increase sales, so they need to deliver killer games that literally sell the One. I can’t see then canning the Xbox division as it has to much potential but there was once a time when Sega was the console above all others and no one was going to take that crown. What about Atari or Nintendo.

It is probably too early to start talking about the selling of the Xbox division, but I wouldn’t be surprised to hear another burning platform speech if it doesn’t improve significantly.

I hope that it is, without proper competition gamers are the ones with most to lose. Just remember last gen it was the new IPs that moved consoles not sequels. If you look at the WiiU it has released some pretty good games, all sequels, that have not really seemed to shift much, with the exception of Mario Cart 8.

You have to respect Nintendo and their transparency. When their sales were pitiful for the WiiU, they reported it. They didn’t hide the numbers. They didn’t hide behind PR crap. They just took it on the chin, and moved on.

Kudos to you Nintendo! Shame on you Microsuck!

And Nintendo said that firing people will never be their first option when things go bad. Having skilled developers, ect, is more important than firing them to show profits, short term fix. And Nintendo said that firing employees will have a negative effect on the work quality from remaining employees and that is not what Nintendo wants.

So yes, kudos to Nintendo and shame on you Microsoft.

Start working at home with Google! It’s by-far the best job I’ve had. Last Wednesday I got a brand new BMW since getting a check for $6474 this – 4 weeks past. I began this 8-months ago and immediately was bringing home at least $77 per hour. I work through this link, go? to tech tab for work detail

It’s the same thing $0N¥ has been doing by comining PS2 with the PS3 and the PSP with the PS Vita. They all do it when one of the numbers is something to hide, especially $0N¥.

decent article you normally know what you are talking about. This time however you are wayyy off. X1 is outselling the 360 by far at this point in both respective lifecycles. X1 will be fine with the Halo MCC coming in nov ..Now you can bet your ass that right there will easily sell 1.5- 2 million consoles through the new year…id bet my life on it

If people gave it a chance, they would be VERY pleased. The ui is pretty great, and gaming is great, too. The snap feature comes in handy if you’re leveling up for hours, because you can snap tv to help you not die of boredom. Microsoft is coming out with updates all the time to address what they envisioned for the console (minus some drm), and what the fans want. If the console is doing bad, it’s because people are afraid to give a weaker system a chance, but if they did, they just might decide that it’s their favorite.

Don’t get me wrong, the PS4 is awesome, too, but the Xbox One seems like it is just trying harder to win fans over post launch. I had a PS4 once, and I plan to again, but for the time being, I’m very satisfied with my Xbone.
Also, if you’re a media streaming fiend, like myself, I know how to stream movies to the Xbox One.
