Who’s going to win the Next-gen?

Winner

The next generation of consoles is nearly upon us. Sony’s already played its hand, giving us a glimpse of the future with its PlayStation 4. Microsoft may be set to up the ante when it shows us its next Xbox, possibly as early as next month – kicking off the next round of console wars. Who will “win?”

Speaking at SXSW this weekend, industry analyst Michael Pachter has put his money on Microsoft.

“Microsoft wins the next generation. The TV tuner and Skype are killer apps,” predicted Pachter, rubbing his crystal balls.

Neither of those features are confirmed for Microsoft’s nextbox, but it’s highly likely they’ll appear. That doesn’t mean that Pachter believes Sony will lose outright, though he does believes that the PlayStation’s still playing catch-up.

“Sony thrives in the next generation. Still playing catch-up, but Gaikai and content are huge advantages,” he said.

As for Nintendo? He doesn’t think Nintendo’s current dominance will be quite as pronounced – as its ailing Wii U already demonstrates.

“Nintendo software still king but console hardware sales will be challenged. Handheld hardware sales will lose share to smartphones and tablets.”

Personally? I don’t really care for a TV tuner or Skype in my consoles; call me weird, but when it comes to gaming consoles, I’m most concerned about, well, games.

    PC already winning.

Jokes aside, I’m with you Geoff. I’m all for gaming. As long as they make very decent non-copy+pasty games at a reasonable price, I don’t really care who is leading the market.

What I do care is if they port (porty-pasty) and do it horribly. Equal games for all, equal awesome quality games for all, cross platform,

And while I am on this wishlist, I want a six figure salary every month and the moon to be made out of cheese. Different cheeses. And I want my car to run on air, and have kinetic barriers.

The pc has won every generation if we go by hardware sales which everyone seems to do.

Dude, absolutely agree. Also, my car mustn’t just run on air. It must run on fision that can turn my garbage in to clean energy. Oh and it must fly be able to go back to the future and I want a hoverboard like yesterday.

On a serious note: Yeah, the horrible porting must stop. BUT, with the PS4 working on a PC architecture ported games will most likely get even less love in the future as there is even less compatibility to work through 🙁

PC will always win. I’m with you against the anonymous trolls that turn off their PS3s just to downvote people.

And yes, they are mostly PS3 butthurts, because they just show up when someone “attacks” or implies that Sony’s console isn’t as good to downvote or when someone bashes Microsoft to upvote.

Pachter needs to have his head read. If he believes a TV Tuner and skype are going to make the nextbox win then he has lost sight of what a console is meant for.

The next-gen winner will be decided by developer support. No more. No less.

As it stands now, PS4 launch impressed me with the fact that games was at the forefront!! Not gimmicks, not social….. Games, and that is what I will base my vote and money on: Which one of the PS4 and Nextbox will give me the best gaming experience!!

Its a different thing, I have both a PC and PS3 and I find I use my PC more for competitive games and fps’s such as Farcry 3, GW2 and Dota. I play my PS3 for a generally more relaxed experience, I prefer platformers and rpg’s on my PS3. For online Co-op my PC wins hands down but for chilling and playing a split screen co-op my PS3 is always the first in line.

See each of them have different strengths and weaknesses.

It’ll eventually be the same as the current gen with Nintendo losing sales due to not having a new gimmick. I won’t be touching a new console until there are enough exclusive titles to warrant the purchase which, in all likelihood, means I’ll be getting a new console in 3 to 4 years time as I don’t intend on playing God of War 6, Gears of War 5, Uncharted 5 or Halo 5.

These new consoles are focusing on “interactive” bullshit instead of doing what they should be doing, as in, show me some original games for your new systems that aren’t retreaded sequels! Originality in game titles is the biggest advantage to next gen consoles, not “who’s console can interactively suck another one’s dick” the best… I’m not so-much tired of having Origin,Steam and Battlenet telling me constantly what my friends are doing every second of their gaming lives but I never really gave a shit in the first place. If we want to play games together, guess what, we do without them bombarding us with useless info all day.

But still nintendo has the best sales in systems sold to date. Nintendo will always be a seller no matter what.

No argument from me bud, I’m a big fan of Mario and Metroid from the NES days until present. Their timing on the Wii was perfect but everyone who bought one hardly ever used it after a few months due a serious lack of decent titles. It doesn’t help if you have a great console but 3rd party developers regard it as a casual gamer/kiddie console.

Once again they have released a console with 6 year old tech (Wii U remote aside) and will again miss out on sales to hardcore gamer’s.

      Ok, 10 downvotes. so far.

I thought my point was clear enough. It does not matter to me who wins, in real terms, as long as we get better and better products and the major players keep pushing each other forward. We, at the end of at all, will (should?) get a better experience on the different consoles out there because of this competition. I just hope the major players remember the consumer in their drive to better each other’s products.

So, I (and all console users) would still like to win at the end of the day.

If it has a TV tuner in there then you’ll have to have to show you TV license when you buy one.

I don’t know, but it will take 10 years or so to know the winner, so why the hell are we talking about this now?

These predictions and speculation bore me. I don’t even know if I want to buy a next-gen console yet.

If you own a decent PC, do yourself a favor and buy ArmA III. Please. I’m addicted and want others to get addicted.
