Yesterday I was having a conversation with someone in the industry about what I view as game-changing pre-order bonuses and whether they are a good thing for the industry or tantamount to cheating for pre-order customers.
It all started with this video for the Industrial Revolution pack for Bioshock Infinite.
If you pre-order this awesome looking game you will receive the following
- 500 bonus in game credits
- 5 lock picks
- an Industrial Revolution mini game
- The chance to pledge your allegiance to a side on their Facebook page
The official explanation is that
The Industrial Revolution Pack grants exclusive access to three in-game gear items that boost combat abilities.
In my view this means that the game is slightly easier if you pre-order the game and therefore Irrational Games are offering the ability to buy an advantage for Bioshock Infinite. Granted it’s only in the single player game and doesn’t affect anyone else but is it okay?
However I was kindly told I’m an idiot because the in game credits and lock picks are available to earn in game and therefore this is not a real game changing advantage.
So I thought I’d pass it over to you guys and girls in the community. Do you love the idea of these sorts of pre-order bonuses or is this a bad trend in the industry?
