What is the most common genre? Wrong!

So you think you know a lot about gaming and what the current market is like? You’re pretty sure that we are inundated with shooters and fighting games and you yearn for the days of a good adventure title or puzzler?

Well then you are in for a bit of a surprise as Kurt White has scraped through 24 000 videogames spanning back to 1975 and has come up with this chart showcasing which genres are doing well and how things have changed over time.

For bonus points he also lists the platforms underneath which made me depressed, I used to love my ZX Spectrum.

So are you surprised by how little of the market shooters corner and how many puzzlers there are out there?

Also interesting is how the PSP and DS lost so much ground since the iPhone and iPad arrived.
