What do you want from Grand Theft Auto V?

Yesterday, Rockstar Games officially – albeit a little sneakily – formally announced GTA V, with a trailer promised next week this time. Of course, we all knew it was coming – but there’s been scant details about the game’s setting and location, characters or even time period. Of course, the rumour mill is churning.

The fact that it’s a numbered GTA should get people excited. Rockstar has previously stated, when demoing GTA IV, that it represented a paradigm shift, as GTA III had done before it. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, while better, more realised games than GTA III, weren’t nearly as revolutionary. The same could be said for the Episodes from Liberty city; The Ballad of Gay Tony and The Lost and the Damned. The “V” on the end of the new GTA could mean big changes for the series.

Those changes, according to Kotaku’s sources, include the chance that we might be playing the game from the perspective of multiple characters; expanding on that concept from Episodes. According to those same sources, GTA V will be set in the US once again; this time in a recreated, but more realistic Los Angeles. It’s not the first time the series has played with that city; San Andreas was a fictionalised version of the city (much like Liberty City was a faux New York) but the evidence rumour-mongering suggests that the series as a whole will edge closer to the realm of reality and be set in Los Angeles proper. The “V” in the announcement picture has a similar aesthetic as the US dollar bill – leading some to believe that the game will be further grounded in reality by having its narrative centered around the current economic woes.

It wouldn’t be the first time Rockstar’s dabbled with Los Angeles proper; Rockstar’s Team Bondi-developed L.A Noire had a wonderfully recreated mid 1900’s LA, while Midnight Club: Los Angeles had a more modern take on the city. The shift to realism makes sense; GTA IV was far more realistic than the last proper entry in the series, the ludicrous San Andreas. There’s also the fact that Saint’s Row, the once derivative GTA clone, has cornered the market as over-the-top silliness goes.

Those are the rumours; but what is it YOU want from the next GTA? Personally, all I want is for there to be no forced social interaction with NPC’s. “Hey cousin! Want to go Bowling?” No…No I don bloody well not.
