Welcome Monday and fanboys alike – here’s a Kinect Phsyics video to fight over Getting There
   September 6th, 2010 clock image 6:30 am

Kinect

Earlier this morning I spotted a video on N4G entitled “GameTrailers: Kinect Physics Demo Not Impressive” which is currently lighting up the site but something’s amiss.

So while this video is interesting and available below let us try spot why this is a complete fanboy article.

First up, the article implies that GameTrailers are saying that Kinect’s physics is bad, secondly the video is pretty old and has also been ripped from GameTrailers onto YouTube.

So with that out of the way do the trolls have a point? Are the physics in the below video unimpressive? Personally I don’t really know what I am looking at, the guys move and Kinect tracks them. It can track a couple of points on their body and can also remove the background and other non-participating objects.

All in all I expect Move to be more precise and to be great for for the more core titles while Kinect is going to be less precise but more entertaining for the family and casuals.

Sony handing out console bans to PSJailBreak users

  • Aussious

Hmmm I am really curious to how this whole motion controller wars notion is going to end. I am not impressed by either SONY or MS, copying a concept Nintendo came up with 5 years ago. After the 3DS im curious to see what their next Home console will be like but I have a feeling that my next system is gonna be a Nintendo.

  • RSA-Ace

If it’s an old video I think the argument is a bit mute. Kinect has made some major changes and improvements.

But if they released a video like that now I’d be a bit disappointed. The avatars changed half way through (Kinect couldn’t tell who was who just that they were a who). No point in fully dissecting the video because everyone can see what happens.

  • RSA-Ace

Not to get in a fanboy war but you do realise that Nintendo copied Sony right? and MS did as well. Nintendo just had the balls to release it first and have faith in it (which Sony didn’t).

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mheOtyWNjV0 that’s a video from the year 2000…

And in related news… I put the line break after our related icons in the wrong place and broke the site this morning… bah humbug.. will fix that later.

[Edit] That’s what I was commenting for.. glad to see the related icons linked to a PS Move demo.. that’s well worth checking out as a comparison.

    I will be buying…..

    Neither!!!

History will repeat itself….sony won the hd format war.MS tried but this is wot sony is king at….SONY will end Kinect!Wonder wot Patcher gonna say when that happens..!

  • doobiwan

I saw kinect pysics in action at TechEd, it’s not perfect, it’s easy to see how a slap dash developer could muck it up, but with some decent effort it could be quite good.

  • easy

the wii-mote is far from perfect, yet +-60 million console sales later…

perfection does not always guarantee accessible & fun gaming, but looking like a tool does. based on that pearl of wisdom, kinect will be a top seller ;)

Aussious, don’t forget that the Eye Toy (PS2) came out well before the Wii…

  • ewie

And before 2000 microsoft had this.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_SideWinder

So the one copy the next and so on, you will most likely find motion control devices back in the patents of these companies a long time as well.

  • http://twitter.com/JimLenoir Sir James Knight of Bobby Kotick

I’m definitely not a fan of the Kinect, but I sincerely hope that these are merely videos from a much earlier stage of its development, otherwise… Microsoft is really going to embarrass itself.

  • http://twitter.com/JimLenoir Sir James Knight of Bobby Kotick

What’s the sidewinder game pad got to do with controller-less motion gaming?

  • RSA-Ace

@ewie: What does that have to do with anything? That was simply a standard game pad that connected to a computer.

  • koldFU5iON

I wouldn’t take too much substance away from this video as this is the configuration window on the xbox debug units to setup tracking for the kinect. It’s really a lame attempt at putting the kinect down for a piece of software that’s meant to get code ready for demonstration purposes

  • http://www.designwave.co.za Nick de Bruyne

The way that the guy on the right’s avatar was screwing up does really bring up some concerns. It’s strange that it seemed mostly fine with the person on the left though, but the other one was all over the place.

  • RSA-Ace

While it is for demonstration purposes the thing that they are demonstrating is really improtant. They are showing you what the Kinect is seeing. If Kinect is getting something wrong then developers are getting something wrong. If Kinect is sending incorrect data to the developers then they will have to write their own software to try and fix that – which is wasted time.

But like I said previously – The is from too long ago to judge. I’m sure most of these kind of bugs have been ironed out.

  • beta tester

well all i have to say is its a awesome piece of kit you have too buy one :D
