Sure, we may be spending our nights playing Mass Effect 3, SSX and Street Fighter X Tekken at the moment, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t other games out there, titles which haven’t really spent a national budget worth of advertising to force their way into the mainstream media.

One such title is Blades of time, a spiritual successor to X-Blades. What’s it about? See for yourself after the jump.

What’s it about?

Stuck on a strange and hostile planet, treasure hunter Ayumi finds herself exploring secrets, gaining new powers and fighting off hordes of enemies and the sentient island itself, while avoiding traps and certain death.

The chaos magic that permeates throughout the island has warped its inhabitants, so players will need to hack/slash and shoot their way through, while making use of a “Time Rewind” gameplay feature that allows players to reverse their actions, or even make a temporal clone with which to distract enemies.

Ayumi can also dash in order to close the distance between her and opponents, and will have 40 sets of skills, ranging from traditional melee all the way through to chaos and order magic. What really looks intriguing however, are the environments and art design, which are stunning and gorgeous to behold.

Developer Gaijin Entertainment has also ditched the heavy anime-inspired visuals for more expressive and realistic designs, while the combat areas feature ancient temples, lush jungles and islands in the sky. A co-op mode for the campaign, and some PvP action is also on offer here, bringing some much needed multiplayer attention to the game.

So far, it looks like a great game that isn’t getting any attention, so if you’re looking for something that has some personality and will most likely end up as a cult-favourite game, then this little gem might be what you’re looking for.

We’ve got a review coming up for it soon, but if you cannot wait any longer, Blades of Time does release next week Friday for PS3 and Xbox 360.
