Ubisoft pledges lasting support for the old consoles

Assassin’s Creed Unity is coming later this year, and like many new-gen franchises, will be shrugging off the shackles of last-gen’s graphical constraints. That doesn’t mean that Ubisoft won’t still be releasing games for the old consoles though.

Those of you still hesitant to jump in to the new generation of consoles till have a year or two before you’re left without games from the French publisher.

“We will have games for PS3 and 360 for this year and probably the years after,” Ubisoft vice president of creative Lionel Raynaud told gaming magazine Edge (via CVG) in an interview.

Reynaud also affirmed that supporting the old systems won’t hold their new games back. The last Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag was available on both new and old systems – and the last gen compatibility is something that many felt hindered Black Flag’s grander plans.

“We want to be able to provide games to people who are playing on these consoles. Black Flag was the first Assassin’s Creed game of this new generation but it was designed with that in mind, but I wouldn’t say it was a cross-generation game, as it has features that could only be for this generation.”

Reynaud doesn’t believe the old gen stuff is holding back games at all.

“It’s a choice – even when you do a game that has old-gen and new-gen versions, we decide which one is lead,” he said. ”So if you decide that new gen is lead for all of your games, then you have no restrictions at all – you’re just saying that the other generation will maybe not be able to have everything but still be a better game than we’re used to having on this generation. We never made choices on Assassin’s Creed or Watch Dogs where because we have this other generation we couldn’t put something in the game. It would be a very bad call from a company and brand perspective.”

We’ve seen very little of the next Assassin’s Creed, Unity – though we expect it to look rather nice. Hopefully we’ll see a proper “next gen” Assassin’s creed this year.

Well it’s pretty simple business logic. There’s a massive install base for the older consoles. Just instantly ceasing development on them to concentrate on the new would be rather silly.

Was gonna say that on your first comment. Go PS3 before bro. seriously, there are SOOOOOOO many good games on the system, it’s really amazing. Games that no one talks about like 3D Dot Heroes will just make you fall in love with gaming all over

Bought the game of coarse , in fact I bought the first 4 AC games for a solid R200 at look and listen , really hoping to play through the games in order , and then pick up AC 3 when it’s cheaper

Crack that sucker. Honestly I don’t feel bad about it. Sure it’s not LEGAL really, but in all honesty , you payed for the game, why should ANYTHING stop you from playing. It’s bullshit. And nice price 🙂 AC 3 is almost at a good price. I would pay nothing more than R200, you can find 2nd hand copies for less

Actually, It’s a grey area, If you OWN the game, as in, Hard Copy, Or as a digital download. Cracking it is technically like installing a mod. and mods aren’t illegal. (at least not in SA)

            March 31, 2014 at 11:55

Yup, very grey, but I don’t know man, I find it more disgusting that you can’t play a game you bought with your own hard earned cash. To me…That’s robbery

Oh yeah, Totally, Before i had Uncapped Internet at home, (The Dark Ages) I had to crack most of my games, Or lug the Goliath around to friends houses for updates…. Cracks won that fight many a time….

Oh gosh , cracks …. But am I mistaken on that they should have provided the support from the word Go ?

I and if I am looking for this crack , what crack am I looking for ? Just a simple controller crack ? ( Noob )

ok so i got the controller to work ( simple google search for a crack worked thanks )

next issue , its not loading the graphics right , missing textures missing that , audio is fine , but def a graphical glitch ( if its gana carry on like this , i might just buy the freaking thing with steam )

Ps i am using windows 8.1 (64bit) i am guessing there is a problem with AC spewing with 8.1

I feel like a twat , whole time i ve been going on about Backwards compatiablity for PC and now a game i wana replay cause it was my first taste of next GEN (back in 2007 i think) is not working ….

i know i know , Uplay is shit i should just use steam

I did that. Played through 1, 2.1, 2.2 & was a couple of hours into 2.3 before I got burnt out from playing AC after just over 100 hours of it lol. Still need to finish 2.3 & picked up 3 the other day on special.

Solution: Rebuy on Steam. OR find community patches.

If you Don’t have a 360 controller (which is natively supported, i think) You can download x360ce (this is a controller emulator, and it works, I use it to play Darksouls with my controller)

I quite like Ubisoft… They never disappoint (well, they rarely disappoint). Glad they’re sticking to their guns. Just hope they’re right and that current-gen does not hinder new-gen from their side.

Looking forward to the next Assassin’s Creed (current and new gen, seeing as they will be different). Will keep me plenty occupied with Assassin’s Creed goodness!

UPlay and Ass Creed: The yearly series are two major disappointments recently. Also they were the ones who went “Starforce is the best DRM and we will ALWAYS use it”. Brings back memories of broken drive.

Actually I think the majority of people who played it will say that Assassin’s Creed IV was amazing. Just saying… To each their own.

CoD 1 and 2 was amazing as well. Stating that they will bring out at least a game a year (Statement was made a day or so ago) is going to bring production down to stupidly horrible levels. I dare you to name one series that comes out every year that has not messed up somewhere in single player.

Actually AC has been a yearly franchise for the last 5 years… Perhaps you missed that? The statement from a few days ago was just reiterating that.

And out of those 5 iterations (AC2, AC:Brotherhood, AC:Revelations, AC3 and AC4), I would say only AC3 was a letdown… Even then, it’s not a terrible game, like some yearly franchises – it’s just not as good as the other games in the series.

I think Ubisoft are big enough, and smart enough, to not ruin one of their prime franchises – they wouldn’t be doing it yearly if they didn’t think they could manage it. It’s one of those franchises that is their bread and butter (like the Far Cry series) and the sort of thing that gives them the cash flow to allow them to then take risks with new IPs like Watch Dogs.

But hey, as I said before – to each their own. If you don’t like ’em, and it’s clear you don’t, simply don’t play their games. Problem solved.

Hold on just a sec. No need to get aggressive. Actually I own most of them and quite enjoyed them except for brotherhood and AC3. I truly hope you are right but often as not big game publishers tend to do the bad things instead of the good. Also for good measure I personally think the quality has gone down already but only up to 3 since I have not been able to play further and they are backlogged.

Let us see what happens in a years time then shall we.

            March 31, 2014 at 12:40

Not aggressive… Just defending a publisher / developer I regard quite highly and that I think, in the greater scheme of things, has consistently delivered (I’ve been a fan since way back in the day).

As you say, anything can happen. And yes, they may mess things up. But I’d like to think that won’t be the case. Time, as they say, will tell.
