Total War Studio will be making Warhammer games

Warhammer, the fantasy table-top game from Games Workshop hasn’t had a decent videogame in forever. The Space-bound Warhammer 40K series has fared better under THQ with Dawn of War and Space Marine games actually proving themselves to be worthwhile. That could change.

Publisher SEGA and developer Creative Assembly, behind the Total War games,  have teamed up with Games Workshop to produce a series of games in the near(ish) future.

The Creative Assembly has, they say,  created a new ‘high-calibre’ team to produce Warhammer games, the first of which will be coming in 2013.

Tim Heaton, Studio Director at Creative Assembly said of the deal, “With this year being our 25th anniversary. It seems fitting for us to embark on such a dream project with such a well-established partner. The incredibly rich and detailed Warhammer world is something we grew up with, and has left an indelible imprint on us as both designers and gamers.

“We’ll be doing the Warhammer universe justice in a way that has never been attempted before. We’re bringing those 25 years of experience and expertise in extremely high-scoring games to bear, delivering a Warhammer experience that videogamers will absolutely love.”

Games Workshop’s Head of Licensing, Jon Gillard thinks the partnership with SEGA will be fruitful. With Creative Assembly behind it, you can probably be rest-assured that it’ll be a faithful recreation of the popular tabletop game.

“We have enormous respect for SEGA and Creative Assembly and have felt for a long time that the combination of the enormously rich setting of the Warhammer world, and their stunning development talent is a match with huge potential.

“Now that we’ve managed to bring these two giants of gaming together it is safe to say that some truly amazing products are going to be unleashed as a result. We are excited at the possibilities, and are enthusiastically working with the team at Creative Assembly already.”

This partnership doesn’t affect the Warhammer 40K licence, which still sits with THQ…for as long as THQ still exists, that is.

Any of you in to Warhammer…or is that too geeky even for gamers?

I'm old, grumpy and more than just a little cynical. One day, I found myself in possession of a NES, and a copy of Super Mario Bros 3. It was that game that made me realise that games were more than just toys to idly while away time - they were capable of being masterpieces. I'm here now, looking for more of those masterpieces.
