The next Skyrim patch won’t fix PS3 lag issues

Skyrim is an amazing experience, and one of the best games this year – unless you’re playing it on a PS3, where it’s essentially broken. While some are unaffected by a bounteous bevy of bugs most players are experiencing some pretty crippling lag that gets worse  the longer you play. The general consensus amongst PS3 Skyrim players is to wait for the next patch before continuing their quests.

Sorry…but the next patch isn’t going to help.

“While the 1.2 update fixed the long-term play issues for most PS3 users, we are aware that is not the case for some,” Bethesda said in its blog.

“We’ve been reaching out to a number of those users to collect save games, so we can take a look at their specific issues. Right now we know it’s not one thing, but a combination of smaller ones that some folks are seeing, but others are not.”

The lag, Bethesda says, is the result of a number of issues.

“Some seem to be the PS3 autosaving in the background (you can turn that off), some may be SPU AI updates, and some may relate to dynamic system memory allocation.”

That they seem to know the cause of the issue doesn’t seem to matter.

“These fixes are not in the current 1.3 update that is in final testing, but will be in future ones,” Bethesda promised.

“We understand how frustrating it can be when your game is having issues, and we thank all of you for your continued feedback and patience. Rest assured we take your gameplay experience seriously and will continue working on this until it’s resolved.”

If I were playing this on the PS3, I’d be all sorts of pissed right now – and that rage would be more than justified.
