Team Ninja surprised by negative Ninja Gaiden 3 reaction

surprise

Ninja Gaiden 3 was not particularly well received. Despite my warnings, our own Darryn picked it up because it was still Ninja Gaiden, and I was obviously wrong. Silly Darryn. He ended up hating  it so much that he asked you lot the best way to destroy the thing, to help purge its existence from his memory. So yes, Ninja Gaiden 3 was a steaming load of horseshi…nobi. Somehow though, despite ripping the very soul out of the game, Tecmo’s Team Ninja is surprised by the game’s poor reception.

Speaking to Gamasutra in the same interview about DOA5’s big boobs, Tecmo’s Yohei Shimbori said that the team has learned a nasty lesson about taking fan feedback in to consideration, after fans’ vociferous displays of outrage after the game’s release.

“Everybody at the studio was pretty shocked” he said, when initial reactions to the game started coming in “It really made us take another look at the game and why that reaction was there.”

“One of the things that I learned was the power of having a series behind you, and what it means to be part of a series. There are existing fans out there, and you have to think about the people who have supported the series for so long, and you want to make sure that the game that you make appeals to them first, and satisfies those fans first.”

Team Ninja’s obviously listened to their own advice, and stuck to Ninja Gaiden’s roots – because the next game in the series is going to be a cel-shaded zombie-slasher. Wait, what?

I'm old, grumpy and more than just a little cynical. One day, I found myself in possession of a NES, and a copy of Super Mario Bros 3. It was that game that made me realise that games were more than just toys to idly while away time - they were capable of being masterpieces. I'm here now, looking for more of those masterpieces.
