Surprise surprise Microsoft defends it’s Kinect pricing Getting There
   July 29th, 2010 clock image 6:30 am

JoyRide

As much as I love StarCraft it is annoying that it has completely decimated the gaming news world and we are now left with nothing but scraps to post.

Today’s first riveting post comes from Brett Siddons at Microsoft UK who has come out to defend the price of the Kinect by stating that while 130 Pound is more expensive than the PS Move’s pricing we need to remember that it comes bundled with a free game and that’s all we ever need to pay.

You don’t need to spend anymore on extra controllers for multiplayer or an added PS Eye. After picking up the Kinect you are set for multiplayer motion controlled gaming.

While I agree with him entirely and feel that $150 is not overly expensive I feel Microsoft has truly missed an opportunity to decimate the opposition in the motion controlled environment with the pricing, they should have rather ensured they could have gotten the device out of the door for under $100 and then the Internet would have been singing their praises and the sales would have been through the roof.

Either way I still expect them to take it home this holiday season unless Sony or Nintendo have something special up their sleeve.

PS: 10 points if you can identify the 4 South African’s in the header image

  • RSA-Ace

It’s funny how Sony’s said the same thing when the PS3 was more expensive than the X360.

  • zerogreen

Can I get 2 points for only knowing Dawid Venter?

  • http://www.lazygamer.co.za Gavin Mannion

    Sure.. why not ;)

The one on the far left is Dawid Venter from G.E.A.R Magazine

(edit: Left as in your left… the big guy racing not the guy with his arms crossed)

  • Fox1

Gavin and Nick. Don’t know how the 4th guy is

  • Fox1

$150 is affordable for medium income earners. How does $150 become R1999? R1500 was pushing the barrier but R1999 is over the limit for a peripheral

  • Bobby Kotick hates to pay too much for stuff

I think you’re forgetting that South Africa (and Africa in general) is very much on the periphery as a market. We don’t have the buying power of Europe, Japan or North America, so there’s no real push to provide games and hardware at lower prices (that goes for all 3 game console makers). Gaming is very much a luxury in Mzansi.

Regardless, R1999 is VERY steep, and for that amount you might as well buy a second xbox arcade (in case your main one dies an untimely death) or save up for a wii.

  • conor

Well at most it should be about €200 to €250 over in Europe which isnt to bad. But still ouch! In the wallet department

  • Bobby Kotick thinks Megaman 9 is awesome

It SHOULD be €200 to €250? I don’t really understand why Europe should pay almost 100% more, conor.

Theorycraft: Let’s assume it gets released in Europe for €200 to €250, that would mean us, Saffers will have to pay at least €300, and then there will be a revolution on our streets, as sun-starved gamers emerge from their basements/flats/parent’s homes and go on a rampage.

Of course most of us might be too weak to fight off the police, but we would have been desensitized from playing really terrible games like Modern Warfare 2 and thus feel no pain.

    The perfect killing machine…
    :P

  • http://www.designwave.co.za Nick de Bruyne

If you want it to really be put into perspective, the Kinect may not be thaaaat much cheaper than a Nintendo 3DS. When you see a 3DS with your own two eyes like we did at E3, and then wonder if you should buy Kinect or maybe add a bit more change and get a 3DS, it isn’t going to be a tough decision.

  • Bobby Kotick thinks Megaman 9 is awesome

If they release another Zelda (or even a paper mario 3D) game for the 3DS then I’m definitely getting a 3DS (and giving my DS up for adoption), there’s no question about it.

But yeah, between a 3DS and Kinect, Nintendo wins hands down, but then I haven’t been keen on the Kinect, and it won’t take much to discourage me from getting it.

  • Bobby Kotick thinks Megaman 9 is awesome

Who’s the chick in the background?

  • Conor

So what your saying Bobby is if Europe gets kinect for say €250. South Africa will have to pay €300 and their will be a teenage revolution correct me if iam wrong

  • Bobby Kotick is a political analyst

In a nutshell… Yes! Or in typical South African fashion, we’ll just end up bitching about it during a braai (barbecue) or if you’re in Cape Town, bitch about it while eating a gatsby in Athlone or in Loop Street.

  • Conor

Theirs a place called Athlone in South Africa!

  • http://www.lazygamer.co.za Gavin Mannion

I’m from the civilised far north (Johannesburg) so I don’t know much about Athlone, but yeah it exists

    http://www.athlone.co.za/

  • Conor

The reason i sounded so surprised about the word Athlone because theirs a county in Ireland called Athlone but i live no where near it. Its near the north iam on south east. Iam sorry i have no link apart from http://www.AllAthlonesAreAwesome.com or aaaa for short.

  • Bobby Kotick is not one of the hoi poloi

They have gatsby in Athlone and a soccer stadium so I guess it’s awesome… (if you wear a bulletproof vest). Nah! I kid it’s an awesome suburb (not quite as pretty as Pinelands though).

Ignore the unwashed barbarians from the North (looks at Gavin), Cape Town is where the civilized stay. We’re cultured and we still go to the theatre.

  • Conor

Well Athlone is no jem in Ireland. Sun city more like stap city. (Men i hope no one from Irish Athlone reads this) but overall i say Irish Athlone and South Africa Athlone are just charming.
