Story and art leaks reveal the scope of Bungie’s Destiny

There hasn’t been too much information revealed on the next big project from Bungie, besides the fact that their game would mirror gameplay elements from their previous hit franchise, Halo. But now, that’s all changing, as leaked art and notes reveals not only the look of the game, but also the backstory as well. And hot diggety, it sounds like something that not enough games have these days…fun.

Kotaku and IGN revealed the following art, which was originally thought to be too good to be true, before Bungie confirmed the authenticity of it. According to those purdy pictures, Destiny will be set in the future, where humanity is fighting a losing battle against an alien menace that has forced them back to earth and one single city stronghold. What seperates this from the Halo story however, is that that city is protected by good aliens, and their mysterious spacecraft.

Our story begins seven hundred years from now in the Last City on Earth, in a Solar System littered with the ruins of man’s Golden Age. A massive, mysterious alien ship hangs overhead like a second Moon. No one knows where it came from or what it’s here for, but only that it’s our protector.

Meanwhile, strange, alien monsters creep in from the edge of the universe, determined to take Earth and the Last City. We are young ‘knights’ tasked with defending the remains of humanity, discovering the source of these monsters and – eventually – overcoming it.

This is where players come in to continue the fight, as they become “space knights”, who travel the cosmos and explore new worlds. Bungie is hyping the game as a massive social experience with MMO mechanics and a universe filled with people.

Instead of getting into a huff about the images for the game being leaked, Bungie instead spun it into a new story with new imagery, telling people to;

Go ahead. Take a peek. It’s alright. We weren’t quite ready, but we will be soon, and we can’t wait to finally show you what we’ve really been up to.

Stick around, we haven’t even started yet.

Here are the actual images from Destiny, with the one at the bottom containing the brown tank being the one that Bungie posted earlier;

I quite like the idea behind this, even the story smells like a crossover between Halo and Mass Effect. What’s more, according to the header image, it looks like Destiny will be a current-gen game as well, releasing on Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.

What do you think? Is the idea of crusading through the galaxy as a space knight something that appeals to you?

Because he's the writer that Lazygamer deserves, but not the one it actually needs right now.So we'll hunt him. Because he can't take it. Because he's not a hero. He's a loud-mouthed journalist, a watchful procrastinator. A dork knight.
