Steam’s Big Picture out of Beta

If there’s one single thing that console gamers like to laud over the PC master race, it’s that they game on large screens from the comfort of their couches. Of course, PC gamers can easily hook their beastly machines to TV’s as well, but it’s fiddly and cluttered,  encumbered with that bulky mouse and keyboard and beset by the lack of a nice big-screen UI to bring everything together. It’s just been made a whole lot easier by Valve.

Steam’s Big Picture mode has ended its beta period, and is now available to anyone who’d like a more console-like experience for their PC gaming.

Big Picture mode, at its simplest, is a nicely redesigned Steam UI and menu system made to be easily navigated using a controller, and tailored to big screens – giving PC gamers the best of both worlds; the stupidly high res, high frame rate gaming they’re used to, and the ease and comfort of sitting their asses down on the couch.

To celebrate Big Picture mode’s release, Steam has kicked off another damned sale with "controller-friendly" games – including delights like Limbo, Castle Crashers, Braid and Alan Wake – with prices slashed by up to 75 per cent.

Go on, you smug elitist PC gamers! Tell us how consoles have just been made redundant. You know you want to.

I'm old, grumpy and more than just a little cynical. One day, I found myself in possession of a NES, and a copy of Super Mario Bros 3. It was that game that made me realise that games were more than just toys to idly while away time - they were capable of being masterpieces. I'm here now, looking for more of those masterpieces.
