Skyrim outsold your favourite platform exclusive Smoking
   February 15th, 2012 clock image 2:00 pm

Skyrimoney

Skyrim, pretty much everybody’s Game of The Year in 2011, has sold more copies than every other game last year – except for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

On PC, it outsold every other Steam title by a factor of 3:1. More surprising is just how damned well it’s done on consoles.

In a press release patting themselves on the back for the sheer number of Skyrim mods created (more than 2 million downloads from over 2500 mods so far!), the company also noted how well the game was performing on console.

According to Bethesda, Skyrim – on the 360 alone – outsold every exclusive game on the platform, including Gears of War 3, Forza 4 and…well yeah. Gears of War 3 and Forza 4. Surprisingly, it’s also outperformed every one of the PS3’s  exclusives, topping Uncharted 3 and Killzone 3. Especially surprising considering how broken the PS3 version was for so long.

“Within the first month following its release in November, Bethesda Softworks reported it had shipped over 10 million units of Skyrim across all platforms, representing approximately $650 million in retail sales, and those results have since increased substantially,” the press release says. That makes it the second highest grossing title behind Modern Warfare 3, so it’s done better than FIFA 12, which is incredibly impressive for a single-player RPG.

These kinds of stats do raise the question of whether exclusives are really necessary, or even worthwhile – especially considering their astronomical budgets. The only problem is exclusives are what help define and differentiate consoles – and without them we’d be headed for a one-console future – without competition or a need for innovation.

Far Cry 3 – An open world full of insane linearity

It’s time, to get physical with UFC Undisputed 3

From the PS3 perspective, they’re necessary because where else are you going to find games that showcase the console’s power (Uncharted, Killzone etc.). For the xbox 360 it was necessary, because you needed new franchises to hook new gamers (i.e. Gears of War, Halo, Fable etc.).

Multiplatform games will always have a better chance of hitting the homeruns (larger install base), but you do need the first party games to push the consoles along in terms of innovation. Gears of War is still the prettiest game on the Xbox 360, and it certainly showed what the console is capable of. Mass Effect as well (before it went multiplat) showed its true versatility. Then, you had Viva Pinata that proved that it wasn’t just a console for trigger-happy FPS meatheads.

In a nutshell, YES… exclusives are important, and they’re even more important when every multiplat FPS game is trying to emulate that pile of crap, Call of Duty. If you want to fend of an industry stagnating than exclusives are your answer. In my humble opinion, exclusives and indies are what ultimately drives creativity (and what pushes the industry forward).

    • http://twitter.com/Valshen Garth Holden

Maybe I missed something, but you are saying that a title doesn’t improve creativity unless it is exclusive?

      • http://twitter.com/JimLenoir James Lenoir

I’d say, innovation comes from a better understanding of hardware and software, and in that sense, who better than the first party developers. That’s not to say, that you won’t find something absolutely mind-blowing coming from the multiplat devs (Rockstar for instance), but the best games this generation have been first party games.

        • http://twitter.com/Valshen Garth Holden

I feel that some exclusives were hurt by not being multiplat (smaller market). Sadly, some multiplats were hurt by gamer apathy/ bad marketing or launching next to a behemoth title. This, plus economic issues and media coverage, all equate to a very hard thing to analyse and research.

        • T-wholf

I agree the Killzone, God of War, Uncharted games graphics looked amazing… the same level would not have been reached had they been multiplatform…. I am mentioning PS3 games cause thats what i play and so thats my opinion, havent seen the XBOX exclusives to give my opinion…

        • http://twitter.com/HighOnFireZA Kaptein

I disagree. You don’t need to know the hardware to be innovative. Knowing the hardware brings you better performance but not neccesarely innovation. Real innovation comes from indy devs since their primary motive isn’t always profit.

If you think about it, the only Ps3 exclusive with real innovation is Little Big Planet. Uncharted, Killzone, GT5, etc have multiplat equivalents with the only real difference being in visuals.

          • http://twitter.com/tauriqmoosa Tauriq Moosa

            As a PS3 owner, I agree.

    • Anonymous

Agreed James, obviously first parties have more familiarity (as well as the collective brains of all 1st parties w/in the corp) with the hardware, so that allows them more innovation time, as well as pushing the envelope for what the graphics can do.

I would argue to those who claim there are other more innovative games that’re multiplatform…like who?  Skyrim?  What was so innovative about that, exactly?  Red Dead Redemption?  Again, where’s the innovation…not going to say they weren’t great in their own rights…but innovative?  Uncharted innovated on the platformer genre, by seamlessly combining gameplay with the storytelling experience, which is why the trilogy has gotten many of it’s accolades.  What about Heavy Rain?  Another brilliant game that was innovative in user interface and how we played through a story.

Again, not saying games like Red Dead, Skyrim, GTA etc… aren’t great games, that provide loads of fun, but innovative is a stretch.  They’re mainly the same thing with prettier graphics.  In some ways, GTAIV was less than it’s predecessors (things to do), and in others, more (Multiplayer).

If you make games that the gamers want then you get sales. Simple. Not bad for a multiplatform single player game.

I’m super scared to buy this game, knowing it has many ‘glitches’ and I don’t have internet at home to download the patches… should I buy it anyway???

    • Anonymous

I would wait for the GOTY edition. By then the future DLC will be include and it will have the latest patch for cheaper. In the meantime I would pick up New Vagas with all the goodies. Good things come to those who wait.
But if you cant wait then get the 360 version. Its solid except for the texture loss that is hardly a train smash if you install it to your 360 hardrive.

        • Anonymous

You can play it on the PS3 but try to have a very passive play style. Dont shoot any arrows, shop, move objects or kill anything because even the first arrow that you shoot into a door will still be there 60hours later. The Ps3 just cant handle all that memory because of the split dual core processor, some strange Japanesse dude made the machine or something and got fired;)

What a cool business model. Release a buggy game for your clients to beta test.  Receive ratings of 10 for your beta game. Release “patches” that break some games further.
Proceed to shunt and slag off one console’s users around (PS3).  Pass go and receive millions of dollars.

Fuck you Bethesda. I was so keen on this game, but I won’t buy buggy games especially when they say to the PS3 owners, “we don’t give a titty fuck about you”. I don’t think I ever will buy a Bethesda game again.

Amazing how much human kind worships at the altar of mediocrity.

Can you guys at Lazygamer please give a heads up when the GOTY edition comes out on PS3? I really really want to buy this game, and will wait if I have to

  • Anonymous

Skyrim is probably a great game, that deserve all the praise and accolades and billions of $$$ that comes it’s way.

But I refuse to pay a cent for it. Not even if they bring out the PS3 GOTY edition tomorrow with all the bugs fixed and it costs me a Zim dollar. Not because I don’t want to play it but because of its a matter of principles.

They make millions by selling a game that doesn’t work. 3 months down the line and it doesn’t work. And don’t you fanboys come and tell me try this, or try that. I don’t want none of that BS. I play console, I don’t need that crap. Plug & Play is supposed to be on of the Pros of console gaming.

Bethesda is the first studio I refuse to support, unless I can get it for free, I don’t want it. Their lack of support for those on PS3 is shocking and they should be taken to court for selling such bullshit to customers.

Let me make myself clear; I do not hate on those who play the game and enjoy it and have no issues. We are all brothers and sisters in a small community and I will never judge those for their preference of platform or games they like. I”m happy for and envy those who play and enjoy Skyrim. But I can not accept the tripe that was handed to us by Bethesda. Accepting mediocrity and praising it is not good enough since other might follow suite.

    • Purple Dragon

Hear hear! It’s great to see that there are more than a few of us who have this view.

I especially like your point about other people following the praise. I am still pissed that this game got ratings of 10 and reviewers were basically creaming their pants.

What I don’t understand is some games get slagged off and get low ratings due to bugs, which is correct. But this game, fuck you would swear was the holy grail of gaming.

I also will not buy Bethesda games on principle. What is sad is that this kind if behaviour is rewarded so you get the same kind of shit over and over. I mean look at COD.

I won’t buy buggy games or games like COD that are carbon copies of each other. But it feels like I am pissing into the wind. Bethesda still got their millions, Activision still get their billions.

I’m also glad I’m not the only one to feel this way.

I will add that I think I have made my point here and on numorous other ocations and will leave it at that. I will stop harping on about it and go on with my life.

No point in crying over spilled milk under the bridge. I’m now looking forward to Mass Effect 3, SSX, Max Payne, KoA (If I can only win a copy on lazygamer), GTAV, Assassin’s Creed III (Just read that it’s been confirmed by Ubi for 30 October) and Half-Life 3 (I can dream).

A lot of other games coming this year, so overall I don’t think I’m losing out.

    • Anonymous

Its not Bethesdas fault because if you could get away with making millions by making the public test your BETA then you would do it. They did it with their last 3 games and started that bullshit with horse DLC. The gamers love it, and lap it all up. Blame the gamers, Microsoft and SONY for allowing broken unfinished untested products on their machines.

Bring back the seal of quality like Nintendo used to have stamped on the box art.

In the meantime this is now a standerd work model thanks to consoles finally becoming PCs with internet access.

Hell, the game got ruined for me because I played 70hours and then realized that if the 360 played off the disk instead of the hardrive I would be able to read the signposts in the game thats how bad the texture loss was….MY TIME WITH THE GAME WAS DESTROYED AFTER THAT

PIECE OF BROKEN SHIT. But its a AAA piece of broken shit.

      • Anonymous

You’re right on it not being Bethesda’s fault. We keep lining their pockets, so they keep doing it. If I was in their situation I would do the exactly the same thing. Why? Because I’m rolling in it.

And yes, bring back the Seal of Quality. Maybe then we’ll have to find other stuff to rant about.

The saying rings true: Fool me once; shame on you. Fool me twice; shame on me.

        • Anonymous

We need to change the mindset of gamer’s, plain and simple.  Otherwise this is going to be the foreseeable future of gaming.  The more this kind of thing occurs, the more I think, people will be receptive to being a bit more cautious about their purchases.  However, I fear that while this is happening, should a major down-swing in AAA game sales start occurring, developer’s are only going to take that as a sign that there’s no more profit to be made there and focus more on casual/smaller app games.

So, what do we do?  The only real way we could ever hope to make them stop these practices is to literally bomb a launch.  And I mean keep sales to under 100,000…lower if possible.  And I really don’t see that happening with the current immediate satisfaction culture.  Sure, there are quite a few people who frequent this site, and other gaming sites….but the majority of the 10+ million who bought Skyrim?

I don’t really see any easy way out of this, gamer’s painted themselves into this corner, and there’s not many options for us, that won’t likely hurt our favorite genre’s in the future.

It’s all about making money, remember…everyone who’s ever complained about this kind of thing in the past has had that thrown in their face constantly.  Well, they’re right, it is about making money and we’ve all bought into it hook line and sinker.

          • Anonymous

There are still AAA titles out there that are great quality games. With devs and publishers who actually still have a passion for the products they create. One person who comes to mind is Ken Levine, from what I’ve seen, but I could be mistaken.

I agree, we are in a bit of a catch 22 situation. Stop buying the crap and they might stop making AAA titles completely, instead of just making it beter.

          • Anonymous

Oh indeed, there certainly are games out there that still live up to the hype and in some cases exceed it.  The problem arises when people start becoming disenfranchised/skeptical of all AAA games, which I believe the path we’re on is most certainly going to lead us toward.  Any major hit in sales could push most developers to simply scrap the 10-60 million dollar titles, for a game that costs nothing to produce but will sell 10+ million units.

          • Anonymous

Clicking the like button felt wrong. It is simply bcause what you say it probably true and I don’t like the idea of that.

          • Anonymous

I know it feels wrong, just as it feels wrong for me to be saying ‘I told you so’ to all the people who told PC gamer’s to shut up and deal with the death of blah blah blah.  It feels wrong, because I hate the direction the industry has gone.  It bares so much similarity to how the US economy has gone tits up…because people cared more about profit than making a sustainable business model.  It’s sickening.  I’m all for capitalism, I’m all for people making huge amounts of money, but I simply can’t comprehend how people are willing to sacrifice the entire business, in order to attain it.

Wow wow, just read an article on IGN. Apparently Bethesda knew about the PS3 problems but
thought that “only a small percentage” of players would be affected. Then I quote Howard from Bethesda:

“”The way our dynamic stuff and our scripting works, it’s obvious it gets in situations where it taxes the PS3. And we felt we had a lot of it under control,” Howard said, speaking about what he calls the “bad memory situation” on the platform. The intention, he goes on to explain, was to fix the game post-release, after developers noticed problems and were unable to tweak the code enough to solve them in time for the planned release date on 11th November last year. ”
