Rumour – The Playstation 4 is going to be floppier than the Next-Box

What do you want out of your next-gen console? Do you want to impersonate Jeremy Clarkson and yell MOAR POWERRRR at the top of your lungs, or would you rather have hardware designers take a gamble and include some newer method of playing games? If there is one thing that gamers can expect though, it’s that future hardware is going to be a bit more floppy.

Hitting the rumour mill hard, VG247 says that sources coming out of the CES event this year that have had a look at Sony’s Codename Orbis, say that the future console will boast a run-capability of 1.84 teraflops. Compared to the 1.23 teraflops that the Xbox successor is rumoured to have, that’s 50% more computational power at the end of the day for the PS4.

So technically, the PS4 is going to have far more horses under the hood of the console, although when it comes to RAM, the Next-box is reportedly still on top with 8GB; over the PS4 amount of 4GB that will be available.

After OS and security needs, that leaves the Next-Box with around 4-5GB of RAM with which to render some games, while the PS4 will only have up to 3GB left over after applications tax. But hey, at least they’ll both be jamming on Blou-Ray when it comes to storage mediums, at least until the Cloud revolution takes place.

Throw in a Radeon HD 8770 GPU for the Next-Box and an AMD A10 APU architecture for the PS4 (plus a discrete GPU), and they’ll show off games that look plenty good. Sort of. Maybe. When the two machines are officially going to be announced is unclear, although sources believe that a March/E3 window is a strong possibility for an unveiling. Bring it on March.

[Editor's note: As you can probably tell, Darryn has no idea what he's talking about when it comes to things of a technical persuasion]
