Rockstar banning people who receive illicit money

2 min read

Rockstar has confirmed, in a posting on their forums, that they have some automated and manual systems constantly checking the online economy of Grand Theft Auto V and if you receive a bunch of illegal money from hackers or cheats then you are likely to get banned.

This has panicked a few people as they are claiming that these cheats are creating this illegal money and anonymously sending it to gamers in an attempt to hide their actions. If a lot of people suddenly become rich it will be harder for Rockstar to track down who is the actual culprit.

The posting itself goes as follows

In response to certain exploits in the game, additional efforts are now in place to add players who clearly cheat to the cheater pool.

This should reduce the amount of reports on the forum of these exploits.

Update:

Question: I heard Rockstar Games was banning players who received large amounts of GTA$ from modders. Is this true?

Answer: To keep the gameplay environment as fair as possible for legitimate players, we routinely do sweeps to separate out cheaters and modders, and to reverse any illegitimate transactions. These sweeps are based on in-game automated detection, examination of suspicious gameplay statistics, and also manually-reviewed evidence submitted by the Community. If you were not engaged in any willful cheating or exploiting yourself, you do not need to worry about getting caught up in our work to separate out cheaters from the rest of the population.

I think the thing to remember here is that Rockstar has absolutely no desire to ban players from their game as the more players in the game the more successful it is. So I would think that they are taking a very careful line in checking that the guilty parties are in fact guilty.

Most of the complaints of innocent people being found guilty do appear a little suspicious but if you find yourself banned and you really haven’t done anything wrong, really, then just head over to the support forums and post your complaint or even just tweet it to @RockstarSupport and they will be able to investigate.

It was only a matter of time, but the damage has been done, GTA Online’s economy was ruined and in turn it made the game frustrating for the rest of us (the non-cheaters). I might return to GTA Online after new year, but for now Killzone calls.

An online economy is always fixable. But it requires a bit of work from the devs. So it all depends if Rockstar see it as worthwhile to fix it or not

I believe that this could be achieved if they partner up with Bethesda… All they need to do is create advertising for Vaults and start marketing the Pipboy in game. Then they drop nukes on everything and use that as a start to a Fallout MMO 😛

I guess when Rockstar doesn’t believe in the concept of dog fooding when it comes to their own product. They may think they made a game that changed “the game”. In the end, when the players “changes the game” Rockstar get all butt hurt.

Rockstar if full of it. I have 5 friends that have been banned and they were absolutely victims of some modder randomly placing billion dollar bounties on them. Now one of them has had his character deleted and all his funds removed, including all his “legit” money, and the other 4 are in a cheater lobby for 9 months and all funds deleted. How is that fair? That and customer support is not supportive at all for anyone “caught up” in these sweeps unjustly. This debacle is Rockstars fault for putting out a game mired with glitches and unprotected from jtag users. You think they would have learned their lesson from all the rampant modding in GTA IV, but apparently not. According to a friend of mine in the UK there was a news article yesterday that put the number of banned players at 5.3 million worldwide, and that 500,000 copies of GTA V have been traded in to UK game stores in the past 24 hours. Friends of mine all across the US have called into their local GameStop and all of them have seen a surge of GTA V trade ins. Looks like Rockstar might have just killed their own game.

Rockstar didn’t kill it, stupid people who cheat and hack did. Rockstar are reacting to total douchebags who ruin the game for everyone else. I’m sorry, but people need to stop being assholes, and start considering other people BEFORE THEY CHEAT. Their cheating is what’s ruining it, not Rockstar.

Get your story straight as well, “I heard from a friend in the UK that he read some obscure something somewhere on the internet” is NOT a valid argument. Be very, very careful, and ALWAYS quadruple check from multiple, reliable sources when you read something on the internet.

Rockstar is killing its own customer base by mass banning victims of these modders. I never condoned cheating or modding in my statement. As far as the source of the article, I have no reason to doubt my friend whatsoever. He stated the article was from the BBC and was even posted in video to the Xbox Live UK dashboard, not “from the internet. If you quote someone make sure they actually stated what you are trying to quote. Dont think I didnt notice how you completely ignored the points I made about unfair and excessive punishment of victims, as well as GameStops across the US having a surge of GTA V trade ins. My story IS straight, just because you choose not to believe it is your issue.

Got 50 million dollars from a random hacker last night and now I have to worry about getting banned. The hackers are the real assholes here but what rockstars doing isn’t right either. Why are we getting punished for what other people are doing? And another thing, maybe if it wasn’t so hard to make money or if we had access to HEISTS already then we wouldn’t be in this situation right now. Fuck you and your capture the flag bs R* give us the fucking heists already its been fucking 3 months wtf is going on? And as far as the bans go, maybe you shouldn’t have released a game that can be so easily accessed by hackers. Banning players isn’t going to stop hackers you need to revamp the economic structure of gta and prevent this from happening again.

P.s this isn’t the first time hackers have almost completely ruined an online experience (red dead redemption) get your shit together R* before you ruin this game more than any hacker could.

They’re not taking careful enough action regarding who they’re banning. The people receiving the money do not have a choice in the matter, such as myself. And to keep reporting those doing it is nearly impossible, they’re often in the room and gone right away, or there are just so many that I’d spend the whole night reporting instead of playing, which is just ridiculous. And not only taking the money that was given, but taking the money earned as well is going too far! I ground those missions out, I’ve invested long hours into building my characters and bank account. They need to fix this and fast.

I did not ask for the money, I am not a cheater. I had no choice. I worked hard on my character and I work hard on completing missions. None of this is fair to us innocent players.

Yeah…wouldn’t want to ruin the nonexistent economy hahaha. What’s the issue? If you’re so concerned with playing fairly, then why are you concerned if people are cheating? It’s GTA for chrissake, and I hardly have issues with low levels trolling or anything (with glitches tanks and what not).

The blame could largely be pointed at rockstar. No heists and laughable money payouts, along with a host of issues that one would expect would have been integrated before it was released. People are obviously going to exploit, not everyone wants nor has the time to grind out, many just want to have money and enjoy all the expensive things. Quit your whining.

You want to know why they have the cheaters pool and are banning players. It has nothing to do with the fact that its morally wrong in the game, but because Rockstar is losing potential customers with all this modded money. Why spend 20 dollars on 1 million in game dollar(which doesn’t get you very far) when you can just cheat and have billions. I believe i can speak that most people wold probably prefer there was no money involved in the games and you acquire your stuff based on rank. The cheaters are not making this game worse its rockstar trying to make a few more bucks.

The hackers have ruined the economy R*. Dump the cash cards and just charge ppl for every little bit of dlc you come out with, instead of giving it away. You can pump money into the company that way because eveyone will buy it. A banned gamer wont though.

I revived money because I was asking for it, I knew they gunna patch it but, I never would’ve thought they are banning people. Now I’m acting like I’m on the run, trying to avoid rockstar to ban me for something that ANY gta online player would’ve done if they didn’t have money and worked their ass of off doing jobs.

Really.. As someone stated before, if Rockstar had make prices that fluctuated and had made making money easier, this wouldn’t be suck a f*cking problem. They are pretty much being hypocrites. All the hackers are doing is what we spent the entire story mode doing: Robbing Banks and Making Illegal money. I don’t think people have realized but some hackers are risking their accounts by trying to make the game fair again. I for one along with many of my friends have put our accounts on the line by making money (NOT FOR OURSELVES) but to give the players that can’t really buy anything a chance to get something they can enjoy. So yeah for those hackers being douchebags and trying to RULE THE WORLD, fuck you because now us “Robin Hood Modders” are trying to re-balance things.

lies lies lies. why do these retarded game site only spread half truth and mostly lies in their articles? rockstar has stated they will not ban people who receive the money, just the people who have been giving it out. the money will be adjusted come next patch. probably roll everyone back right before the first portion of modded money was given out. I honestly don’t care, because once watch dogs comes out, gta 5 will collect dust.

Rockstar needs to give everyone there money back. The only real problem is the people who hack to level up. The people who complain about people having tanks are retarded. Just by one yourself with the money you “wish you could get rid of”. Stupid dumbasses run rockstar I swear

I used to love Rockstar, but now I’ve lost all respect for them. Why would you punish people who are just trying to get past the lack of a real way to get an effective amount of cash to really be able to enjoy the game? Rockstar screwed up by releasing a game before it was really finished, then still took a couple weeks to release online, which was even worse, and still leave out all of the money making aspects aside from some jobs than might give you a half decent amount of cash on the first run, THEN THEY CUT THAT IN HALF! Rockstar is taking thier time with the heists and stock market because that forces people without the time to grind for hours on end to buy thier shark cards with our hard earned money in real life. Anyone notice how soon after releasing shark cards they added the 3.5 million card? Its all been slowed to a crawl to make even more money for themselves, and anyone who gets passed thier little game gets called a cheater and banned. I say let the modders mod until they get the heists and stock market up and running.

ehh who cares… new game will be out to replace this one soon enough… maybe if they weren’t such greedy idiots…. people wouldn’t go as far as to exploit the game…. your in the entertainment field boys…. entertain your players… not to get rich quick…. if so then shut up and accept this never ending wave of exploiters….

Rockstars Bans players that keep money given by Hackers… but they don’t give us a option to GET RID of said money.

    Well… that is fucking genius…
